Reduced pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (D) can be observed in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and associates with increased mortality. However, the prognostic value of D when corrected for haemoglobin (D), an independent modifier of D, remains understudied. Additionally, the prognostic role of ventilation (V)-perfusion (Q) emission computed tomography (V/Q SPECT) findings in patients with PAH, which may concurrently be performed to rule out chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, is uncertain.

Acta Neurochir (Wien)

May 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, The Neuroscience Centre, Copenhagen University Hospital, Inge Lehmanns Vej 6, 2100, Copenhagen, Rigshospitalet, Denmark.

Introduction: The pathophysiology of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) remains to be fully understood. Basic knowledge of the composition and features of cells in the CSDH fluid may contribute to the understanding of the seemingly complex processes involved in CSDH formation and recurrence. This study is the first to examine the composition of cells and of cellular features in both systemic blood and subdural fluid from CSDH patients.

Background: Machine learning (ML) classifiers are increasingly used for predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) and related risk factors using omics data, although these outcomes often exhibit categorical nature and class imbalances. However, little is known about which ML classifier, omics data, or upstream dimension reduction strategy has the strongest influence on prediction quality in such settings. Our study aimed to illustrate and compare different machine learning strategies to predict CVD risk factors under different scenarios.

Department of Medical Radiation Sciences, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, 41345, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Targeted alpha therapy of disseminated cancer is an emerging technique where astatine-211 is one of the most promising candidate nuclides. Astatine-211 can be produced in medium energy cyclotrons by alpha particle bombardment of natural bismuth. The produced astatine is then commonly recovered from the irradiated solid target material through dry distillation.

Echolucency, a measure of plaque instability associated with increased cardiovascular risk, can be assessed in both the carotid plaque and the plaque-free common carotid intima-media (IM) complex as a gray-scale median (plaque-GSM and IM-GSM, respectively). The impact of specific vascular risk factors on these two phenotypes remains uncertain, including the nature and extent of their influence. This study aims to seek the determinants of plaque-GSM and IM-GSM.

Can Plasma Volume Determination in Cirrhosis Be Replaced by an Algorithm Using Body Weight and Hematocrit?

Diagnostics (Basel)

April 2024

Center of Functional and Diagnostic Imaging and Research, Department of Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine 260, Copenhagen University Hospital, 2650 Hvidovre, Denmark.

Background: Patients with cirrhosis often develop hyperdynamic circulation with increased cardiac output, heart rate, and redistribution of the circulating volume with expanded plasma volume (PV). PV determination is part of the evaluation of patients with cirrhosis, but gold-standard methods are invasive, expensive, and time-consuming. Therefore, other estimations of PV would be preferable, and the aim of this study was therefore to study if PV, as assessed by a simplified algorithm based on hematocrit and weight, can replace the gold-standard method.

Article Synopsis
  • Over the past 30 years, tattooed individuals have reported painful reactions during MRI scans, characterized by burning sensations, swelling, and redness, potentially linked to elements in tattoo inks.
  • A case study of a young man with a recent black tattoo showed recurring painful reactions during MRIs, even without magnetic components in the ink, but these reactions lessened over time.
  • The study suggests that the painful sensations may result from interactions between the tattoo's ink and dermal nerves, underlining the need for more research to understand these reactions and develop preventive strategies.

Aging Cell

July 2024

MRC Centre for Environment and Health, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, London, UK.

Metabolomic age models have been proposed for the study of biological aging, however, they have not been widely validated. We aimed to assess the performance of newly developed and existing nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) metabolomic age models for prediction of chronological age (CA), mortality, and age-related disease. Ninety-eight metabolic variables were measured in blood from nine UK and Finnish cohort studies (N ≈31,000 individuals, age range 24-86 years).

We recently used phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) to demonstrate an attenuated postprandial blood flow response in the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in patients with Parkinson's disease compared to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Since both groups showed substantial inter-individual variations, we extended the cohort of controls with a group of young individuals to investigate possible age-related effects. Seventeen healthy young subjects aged < 30 years and 17 elderly subjects aged > 50 years underwent serial PC-MRI to measure the postprandial blood flow response in the SMA after ingestion of a standardized liquid test meal (∼400 kcal).

Background: In epilepsy, the ictal phase leads to cerebral hyperperfusion while hypoperfusion is present in the interictal phases. Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have an increased prevalence of epileptiform discharges and a study using intracranial electrodes have shown that these are very frequent in the hippocampus. However, it is not known whether there is an association between hippocampal hyperexcitability and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF).
