The central nervous system (CNS) is not an immune-privileged compartment, but it is intimately intertwined with the immune system. Among the components shared by the two compartments is the complement, a main constituent of innate immunity, which is also produced centrally and controls the development and organization of synaptic connections. Complement is considered a doubled-faced system that, besides controlling the physiological development of the central network, also subserves synaptic engulfment pivotal to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Background: Clopidogrel, an antiplatelet drug commonly used in cardiovascular disease, is metabolized by the liver mainly through CYP2C19. Concomitant use of Proton pump inhibitors along with clopidogrel may affect the potency of clopidogrel by CYP2C19 inhibition. However, a novel PPI, ilaprazole is known to differ in its pharmacokinetic features, given the potential differences between ilaprazole's interactions and their metabolism with clopidogrel.

Several studies suggest that children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often present deficits in executive functions (EFs). The research on cold EF shows a high heterogeneity across different cohorts of patients as well as different study designs, while studies investigating hot EF and their relationship with different ASD phenotypes are still limited and related only to specific domains, although this concept could contribute to clarify the phenotypical variability by explaining the difficulties encountered by individuals with ASD in daily life, where stimuli are often emotionally charged. With the aim to identify specific neuropsychological profiles in children and adolescents with ASD without intellectual disability, we designed a study protocol comparing a clinical sample of individuals with ASD to aged-matched (10-17 years) typically developing controls (TDC) on a neuropsychological test battery investigating both "cold" and "hot" EF with the purpose of further investigating their relationships with ASD symptoms.

Despite the enthusiasm for targeted cancer therapies in preclinical studies and the success of a select few drugs, many promising drug candidates fail in clinical trials. The gap between preclinical promise and clinical outcomes underscores the need to investigate factors influencing the success or failure of targeted therapies. Dasatinib, an inhibitor of Abl and Src protein tyrosine kinases, is highly effective toward chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) by targeting BCR-Abl, but it is ineffective against solid tumors when targeting Src kinases.

Antimicrobial resistance in the intensive care unit is an ongoing global healthcare concern associated with high mortality and morbidity rates and high healthcare costs. Select groups of bacterial pathogens express different mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance. Clinicians face challenges in managing patients with multidrug-resistant bacteria in the form of a limited pool of available antibiotics, slow and potentially inaccurate conventional diagnostic microbial modalities, mimicry of non-infective conditions with infective syndromes, and the confounding of the clinical picture of organ dysfunction associated with sepsis with postoperative surgical complications such as hemorrhage and fluid shifts.

Orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) represents the standard of care for managing patients affected by end-stage and life-threatening liver diseases. Although a significant improvement in surgical techniques, immunosuppressant regimens, and prompt identification of early post-transplant complications resulted in better clinical outcome and survival in OLT recipients, the occurrence of early bacterial infections still represents a remarkable cause of morbidity and mortality. In this scenario, beta-lactams are the most frequent antimicrobials used in critical OLT recipients.

Parkinson's disease is primarily marked by mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic abnormalities. We recently reported that the combined metabolic activators improved the immunohistochemical parameters and behavioural functions in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease animal models and the cognitive functions in Alzheimer's disease patients. These metabolic activators serve as the precursors of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and glutathione, and they can be used to activate mitochondrial metabolism and eventually treat mitochondrial dysfunction.
