Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy. Patients typically develop rapidly progressive weakness and sensory deficits that can result in complete paralysis requiring mechanical ventilation. GBS is usually a monophasic disease in which an aberrant immune response to an infection or other trigger damages the peripheral nerves.

Unlabelled: Infectious gastroenteritis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in nations with middle and low incomes. In a pediatric gastroenteritis patient, the aim was to determine the therapeutic impact of using the Gastrointestinal Panel in our clinical practice. A single-center retrospective study was designed to evaluate children who were admitted to the hospital for gastroenteritis and had a gastrointestinal panel between August 2021 and January 2024.

Background And Objectives: Neonatal mortality due to severe bacterial infections is a pressing global issue, especially in low-middle-income countries (LMICs) with constrained healthcare resources. This study aims to validate the Neonatal Healthcare-associated infectiOn Prediction (NeoHoP) score, designed for LMICs, across diverse neonatal populations.
Methods: Prospective data from three South African neonatal units in the Neonatal Sepsis Observational (NeoOBS) study were analysed.

Background: Necrotising fasciitis (NF) is a fulminant soft tissue infection that requires timely diagnosis, urgent surgical debridement, and appropriate antimicrobial therapy. The choice of empiric antimicrobial therapy depends on the microorganisms cultured and the antimicrobial resistance profile of the institution. Necrotising fasciitis has not been studied in our setting.

Concerns have been mounting regarding the underdiagnosis of HIV among respiratory co-infections associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The delay in recognizing HIV/AIDS may be attributed to the similarities in clinical, laboratory (lymphopenia) and imaging presentations, which are typical for advanced AIDS but could also be indicative of a COVID-19 infection. Herein, we present a case of a 38-year-old ultraorthodox Jew with a late diagnosis of AIDS in the context of COVID-19 infection.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes a serious socioeconomic burden globally. However, there is currently no consensus on the optimal sampling method for HPVDNA genotyping in circumcised heterosexual men. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic efficacy of 6 different anatomic sampling sites in HPV DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of circumcised heterosexual men with genital warts.

This study aimed to detect airborne (MTB) at nine public health facilities in three provinces of South Africa and determine possible risk factors that may contribute to airborne transmission. Personal samples ( = 264) and stationary samples ( = 327) were collected from perceived high-risk areas in district, primary health clinics (PHCs) and TB facilities. Quantitative real-time (RT) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for TB analysis.

Introduction: It was previously demonstrated that seasonal influenza incidence was significantly decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, possibly due to respiratory and hygiene precautions. From this point, we hypothesized that the COVID-19 precautions could lead to a decrease in nosocomial infection rates in oncology inpatient wards.
Methods: We evaluated the nosocomial infection rates in an inpatient palliative oncology ward in the first 3 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in our country and compared this rate with the same time frame of the previous year in our institution.

Phage therapy is an experimental therapeutic approach used to target multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. A lack of reliable data with regard to its efficacy and regulatory hurdles hinders a broad application. Here we report, for the first time, a case of vancomycin-resistant abdominal infection in a one-year-old, critically ill, and three times liver transplanted girl, which was successfully treated with intravenous injections (twice per day for 20 days) of a magistral preparation containing two phages.

In South Africa, uncomplicated community-acquired UTIs (CA-UTIs) are treated empirically; however, the extent of antibiotic resistance among these pathogens is not well known. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study of women attending ANCs at four tertiary public-sector hospitals in Gauteng. Female patients aged 15-49 years, with urine cultures performed between January 2015 and December 2019, were included.

Adolescents living with HIV comprise a significant patient population in sub Saharan Africa but are poorly retained in care with consequent increased mortality and morbidity. We conducted in-depth interviews with 25 adolescents living with HIV engaged in care from five clinics in Johannesburg regarding their recommendations for the healthcare system. Findings included advocating for adolescent clinics, recognizing the importance of clinic-based support groups, valuing the influence lay counselors have in providing healthcare to adolescents, improving widespread education of vertical HIV transmission and meaningfully linking clinics to the community.

Purpose: The association between the human papillomavirus (HPV) and anogenital carcinomas is well established. However, despite its anatomic adjacency, the relationship between HPV and urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB) is less clear. Recent meta-analysis and case-control studies demonstrated a significant relationship between the presence of HPV DNA and UCB.

Objective: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is one of the causes of death among patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The T peak to T end interval (Tp-e interval) is a parameter that is used in the prediction of SCD. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in Tp-e interval and Tp: QT and Tp: corrected QT interval (QTc) ratios between patients infected with HIV and healthy individuals as well as in other factors affecting patients infected with HIV.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the distribution of microorganisms isolated from the tracheal aspirate and blood cultures of ICU hospitalized patients, and their antibiotic resistance profiles.
Method: Tracheal aspirate and blood cultures sent from ICU patients were evaluated retrospectively between 2014-2018.

Background: The effectiveness of microscopy of Gram-stained smear (GSS) for the detection of male urethral infection is debatable, especially in cases with low inflammation and no visible urethral discharge. This clinical study compared GSS samples collected with the conventional swab method and our new technique, the kissing slide method, together with polymerase chain reaction results to demonstrate the effectiveness of this new method in men with acute urethritis.
Methods: The study included 64 men who presented to the urology outpatient clinic with complaints of acute urethritis between October 2019 and January 2020.

Objective: In recent years, there has been worldwide recognition of the problems associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the HIV-infected population is increasing. Repolarization abnormalities, the significant contributor to life-threatening arrhythmias and mortality, are the most frequent electrocardiographic changes in this population.
