Hypothermia as a Presenting Sign of Venlafaxine-Induced Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome in 2 Neonates.

J Pediatr Pharmacol Ther

December 2024

Department of Pharmacy (MO, GE-C), NYU Langone - Long Island, Department of Pediatrics (MC), NYU Langone - Long Island, Mineola, NY.

Maternal antidepressant use has increased during the past 2 decades, with venlafaxine emerging as a common agent during pregnancy. Both venlafaxine and its active metabolite possess prolonged half-lives in adults; however, abrupt discontinuation may lead to withdrawal including irritability, jitteriness, lethargy, restlessness, and insomnia. The drug and its metabolite readily cross the placenta, posing additional considerations during pregnancy.

Article Synopsis
  • EGFR inhibitors are important in treating cancer but often cause severe dermatological adverse events (dAEs) that can lead to treatment discontinuation, emphasizing the need for better understanding and management.* -
  • A study at The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from 2020 to 2022 analyzed 120 cancer patients on EGFRIs, revealing that 84.2% experienced dAEs, with the most common effects being skin rashes and nail lesions.* -
  • The research highlighted significant risk factors influencing the timing of dAEs, such as drug type, ethnicity, and occupation, leading to the development of a predictive model for these adverse effects.*

Aberrant ( signaling contributes to cancer cell development, proliferation, and metastases of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). exon 14 (METex14) skipping mutation is noted in approximately 4% of NSCLC cases and is targetable with the recently approved tyrosine kinase inhibitors capmatinib and tepotinib. Capmatinib, the focus of this review article, is a highly selective inhibitor approved for use in patients with ex14 mutated NSCLC.

Background: Queens County was identified as the epicenter of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in United States, representing a significant proportion of racial and ethnic minorities. As the pandemic surged and new variants emerged, one factor that has not been explored is the level of pandemic readiness (preparedness) in urban communities.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using a survey to assess pandemic readiness among residents in Queens County, New York, which was disseminated online by means of elected officials.

Student pharmacist-led service-learning projects aimed at community engagement generally provide health education while promoting the pharmacy profession. Many such projects often assume the needs and wants of community residents, and key community partners are often left off the decision-making table when it comes to planning. This paper will offer some reflection and guidance for student organizations to consider when planning projects, with a focus on local community partnerships to identify and address needs for more meaningful and sustainable impact.

A Retrospective Study of the Effect of Metformin on Patients with Metastatic Prostate Cancer.

Clin Med Insights Oncol

February 2023

Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology, Northwell Health Cancer Institute, Donald & Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Lake Success, NY, USA.

Introduction: Previous studies demonstrated that metformin could lead to an inhibition of proliferation of cancer cells through a shift from anabolic to catabolic metabolism. In this study, we seek to investigate the effect of metformin in metastatic prostate cancer.

Methods: Patients followed at Northwell Health Zuckerberg Cancer Center during 2014-2018 were included if they were diagnosed with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) or metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), with ⩾6 months follow-up with and without metformin treatment.

Objective: As out-of-hospital medicine evolves, emergency medical services (EMS) education practices must also be updated to ensure that EMS professionals acquire and maintain the skills needed to best serve patients. We aimed to identify and rank the top 10 research priorities related to EMS education in the United States.

Methods: We conducted a convenience survey of EMS educators to identify challenges facing EMS education before leveraging a purposefully selected panel of EMS educators to prioritize research gaps through a modified Delphi approach.

Over the last few years, targeted therapy has become the mainstay maintenance treatment of patients with ovarian cancer including patients with BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations. Poly ADP ribose polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) are effective in the treatment of patients who are in complete or partial remission. PARPi are known to cause hematological adverse events (AEs), but have not been compared directly to each other.

Targeting mitochondrial dysfunction with elamipretide.

Heart Fail Rev

September 2022

Division of Cardiovascular Diseases, Department of Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, 956 Court Ave, Memphis, TN, 38163, USA.

Although currently employed therapies for heart failure decrease overall mortality and improve patient quality of life temporarily, the disease is known to progress even for patients who receive all guideline-recommended therapies. This indicates that our concise understanding of heart failure and of disease progression is incomplete, and there is a need for new interventions that may augment, or even supplant, currently available options. A literature review reveals that an exciting, novel area of current research is focused on mitochondria, which are uniquely juxtaposed at the sites of both generation of high-energy molecules and initiation of programmed cell death.

The use of epidermal growth factor receptor () inhibitors such as osimertinib has improved outcomes and quality of life for patients with -mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Osimertinib has become the preferred tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKIs) for patients with these mutations after demonstrating superior efficacy compared to first generation TKIs, such as erlotinib and gefitinib. More recently osimertinib has also shown to be beneficial in patients with resectable NSCLC harboring mutations irrespective of whether they received adjuvant chemotherapy or not.

Introduction: The recently published FLAURA trial demonstrated that osimertinib has remarkable efficacy in front-line setting for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). While this has transformed current practice, there are no effective treatments following progression on osimertinib. The aim of our study was to compare progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) between patients initiated on osimertinib to those started on other TKIs.

Mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are common amongst those with non-small cell lung cancer and represent a major factor in treatment decisions, most notably in the advanced stages. Small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) that target the EGFR, such as erlotinib, gefitinib, icotinib, afatinib, dacomitinib and osimertinib, have all shown to be effective in this setting. Osimertinib, a third-generation EGFR TKI, is a favorable option, but almost all patients develop resistance at some time point.

Lorlatinib induced proteinuria: A case report.

J Oncol Pharm Pract

June 2021

Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology, Northwell Health Cancer Institute, Donald & Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Lake Success, NY, USA.

Introduction: Lorlatinib is an oral anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) and C-ros oncogene (ROS1) tyrosine kinase inhibitor with excellent central nervous system (CNS) penetrability.
