Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary nocardiosis is an uncommon infection that can spread to other parts of the body, and the study analyzed CT scan results and outcomes in patients diagnosed with this condition over a 22-year period.
  • Of the 75 patients studied, 18.7% had cases that spread to other areas, with brain and soft tissue involvement being common, and these disseminated cases were more likely to show certain CT findings like cavitation and pleural effusion.
  • Factors like having cancer, using steroid medication, and specific CT patterns were linked to higher death rates within 12 months, while the spread of the infection itself did not significantly influence survival outcomes.

Introduction: Various attempts at automation have been made to reduce the administrative burden of manually assigning Abbreviated Injury Severity (AIS) codes to derive Injury Severity Scores (ISS) in trauma registry data. The accuracy of the resulting measures remains unclear, especially in the New Zealand (NZ) context. The aim of this study was to compare ISS derived from hospital discharge International Classification of Diseases Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) codes with ISS recorded in the NZ Trauma Registry (NZTR).

Background: The occurrence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the gut microbiota composition are known to differ across ethnicities yet how these three factors are interwoven is unknown. Also, it is unknown what the relative contribution of the gut microbiota composition is to each MetS component and whether this differs between ethnicities. We therefore determined the occurrence of MetS and its components in the multi-ethnic HELIUS cohort and tested the overall and ethnic-specific associations with the gut microbiota composition.

Chest

September 2024

Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Asan Medical Center, Seoul, South Korea. Electronic address:

Background: The association between treatment outcome and the mortality of patients with Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease (MAC-PD) with cavitary lesions is unclear. This article assessed the impact of culture conversion on mortality in patients with cavitary MAC-PD.

Research Question: Is the achievement of sputum culture conversion in patients with MAC-PD with cavitary lesions associated with the prognosis?

Study Design And Methods: From 2002 to 2020, a total of 351 patients with cavitary MAC-PD (105 with the fibrocavitary type and 246 with the cavitary nodular bronchiectatic type), who had been treated with a ≥ 6-month macrolide-containing regimen at a tertiary referral center in South Korea, were retrospectively enrolled in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the durability of immunity following the third dose of COVID-19 vaccines in 94 healthy adults, finding that antibody levels remained significantly higher even 9-12 months later compared to levels after the second dose.
  • - Anti-spike IgG antibody responses peaked after the third dose but gradually decreased over time; however, breakthrough infections during the Omicron period increased neutralizing antibodies against various strains.
  • - The results suggest that the mRNA vaccine booster leads to lasting humoral immunity for at least a year and maintains T-cell immunity, indicating the potential for an annual COVID-19 vaccination approach.

Kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) are at increased risk of developing post-transplant malignancies (PTMs), with regional differences in types with excess risk compared to the general population. A single-center, population-controlled, retrospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Thailand among all adults who underwent their first kidney transplant from 1986 to 2018. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of malignancy by age, sex, and place of residence were obtained using data from the National Cancer Registry of Thailand as population control.
