Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to validate and improve the SENIC model for predicting surgical site infections (SSIs) using logistic regression and machine learning techniques, focusing on patients who had gastrointestinal, colorectal, and hernia surgeries.
  • After analyzing data from over 12,000 surgeries, the original SENIC model showed a modest predictive capacity (C-statistic of 0.668), while an updated version using six predictors improved its accuracy (C-statistic of 0.768).
  • Machine learning models using more predictors performed worse than the updated logistic regression model and showed signs of overfitting, suggesting that the updated SENIC model is more reliable for assessing SSI risk after abdominal surgery.

Effect of contrast media on CT bone density assessment: comparative analysis of low-dose chest CT and abdominopelvic CT.

Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Detecting individuals with low bone mineral density (BMD) before clinical fractures occur may help improve the outcomes of osteoporosis and osteopenia. Although computed tomography (CT) is useful for opportunistic BMD measurement, the modality most suitable for opportunistic screening remains unclear. In this retrospective study, we compared the diagnostic performance of low-dose chest CT (LDCT) and contrast-enhanced abdominopelvic CT (APCT) for measuring BMD at L1 level using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as a reference in individuals who underwent LDCT, APCT, and DEXA assessments on the same day.

Based on the hypothesis that hyperuricemia is a modifiable risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, there is an expectation that urate-lowering therapy (ULT) could delay the progression of CKD. Here, we investigated changes in kidney function and the association of the serum uric acid (sUA) level and kidney function during ULT in patients with gout. To do this we conducted post-hoc analysis on patients who received ULT with either febuxostat or allopurinol for more than six months in the CARES trial.

Prognostic significance of right atrial volume and interval changes in patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Respir Med

December 2024

Department of Radiology and Research Institute of Radiology, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH), a severe condition with a poor prognosis, aiming to explore the significance of chest CT and heart contour changes in predicting adverse outcomes for patients.
  • - An analysis of 80 IPAH patients revealed a 3-year survival rate of 65.8%, with several factors such as cardiac arrest history and specific imaging findings correlated with higher risks for adverse events like death or lung transplantation.
  • - The combined use of clinical data, chest CT, and chest X-ray findings increased event-free survival prediction accuracy to 82.2%, suggesting that monitoring these imaging parameters could help identify patients needing more aggressive treatment.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop nomograms for predicting post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), using deep learning analysis of Gadoxetic acid-enhanced hepatobiliary (HBP) MRI.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed patients who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and hepatectomy for HCC between 2016 and 2020 at two referral centers. Using a deep learning algorithm, volumes and signal intensities of whole non-tumor liver, expected remnant liver, and spleen were measured on HBP images.

Background & Aims: The clinicopathologic and imaging features of hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) in Asian population remain unclear. We aimed to analyse clinicopathologic and imaging features of HCAs in Korea and propose an imaging-based method to differentiate β-catenin mutated HCA (βHCA) from other subtypes.

Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included pathologically confirmed HCAs from three tertiary institutions in Korea between 2010 and 2023.

  • RSV causes significant respiratory infections in Thailand, prompting a study to evaluate its clinical and economic impacts across different age groups from 2014 to 2021.* -
  • The study found 2122 RSV-positive patients, with hospitalization costs ranging from approximately USD 780 for children under 2 to USD 2231 for adults over 65; hospitalization rates and costs increased with age and existing health issues.* -
  • While younger children faced the highest overall burden, older adults showed worse health outcomes, highlighting the need for targeted vaccination programs to address these challenges effectively.*

Background: Schizencephaly and encephaloceles are rare developmental birth defects, with the former involving abnormal clefts in the cerebral hemispheres connected to the ventricular system and the latter involving a neural tube defect characterized by the protrusion of brain tissue through an abnormal skull opening. These conditions are individually uncommon, and their simultaneous occurrence in a single patient is exceedingly unusual.

Observations: This case report explores the intersection of these two rare congenital malformations in a 2-month-old female patient from an indigenous community in a rural area of Colombia.

Article Synopsis
  • Advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC) patients may benefit from fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy, but no direct comparisons between different regimens had been previously conducted.
  • An individual patient-level meta-analysis was performed using data from two clinical trials to evaluate overall survival (OS) across different chemotherapy regimens, including nal-IRI plus 5-FU/LV, mFOLFOX, and mFOLFIRI.
  • Results showed that nal-IRI plus 5-FU/LV significantly improved OS compared to both mFOLFOX and mFOLFIRI, with notable side effects differing among regimens; thus, considering both effectiveness and safety is essential in treatment decisions.
