Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury remains a major contributor to organ dysfunction following transient ischemic insults. Although numerous interventions have been found effective to reduce IR injury in preclinical models, none of these therapies have been successfully translated to the clinical setting. Background: The escalating prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Qatar's pediatric population, especially in community-onset febrile urinary tract infections (FUTIs), necessitates a comprehensive investigation into this concerning trend.

Metabolic reprogramming and mitochondrial dysfunction are central elements in a broad variety of physiological and pathological processes. While cell culture established itself as a versatile technique for the elaboration of physiology and disease, studying metabolism using standard cell culture protocols is profoundly interfered by the Crabtree effect. This phenomenon refers to the adaptation of cultured cells to a glycolytic phenotype, away from oxidative phosphorylation in glucose-containing medium, and questions the applicability of cell culture in certain fields of research.

Capecitabine is a fluoropyrimidine that is widely used as a cancer drug for the treatment of patients with a variety of cancers. Unfortunately, early onset, severe or life-threatening toxicity is observed in 19-32% of patients treated with capecitabine and 5FU. Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the degradation of 5FU and a DPD deficiency has been shown to be a major determinant of severe fluoropyrimidine-associated toxicity.

Delayed graft function is the manifestation of ischemia reperfusion injury in the context of kidney transplantation. While hundreds of interventions successfully reduce ischemia reperfusion injury in experimental models, all clinical interventions have failed. We aimed to determine how rapidly high-sensitivity troponin-I (hs-cTnI) levels are lowered by statin therapy in patients with stable cardiovascular disease. Bioanalytical LC-MS for protein quantification is traditionally based on enzymatic digestion of the target protein followed by absolute quantification of a specific signature peptide relative to a stable-isotope labeled analog. The enzymatic digestion, nonetheless, limits rapid method development, sample throughput and turnaround time, and, moreover, makes that essential information regarding the biological function of the intact protein is lost. The recent advancements in high-resolution MS instrumentation and improved sample preparation techniques dedicated to protein clean-up raise the question to what extent LC-MS can be applied for quantitative bioanalysis of intact proteins.

Background: The COBAS 6000 system can be completed by a Modular Pre-Analytics (MPA), an integrated laboratory automation system that streamlines preanalysis. For an optimal throughput, the MPA centrifuges blood collection tubes for 5 min at 1885 × g - a centrifugation time that is not in concordance with the World Health Organization guidelines which suggest centrifugation for 10/15 min at 2000-3000 × g.

IgE antibody screening in children. Evaluation of the Phadiatop Paediatric.

With 200 sera from children, results of the Phadiatop Paediatric test were compared with results of the combination "Phadiatop + mixed-food-RAST". The Phadiatop Paediatric test was found to be efficient for IgE antibody screening in young children, when the results of this test were not solely given as "positive" or "negative", but also as "sample/reference-ratio". Clinical documentation could be obtained retrospectively for 171 children and revealed that 99% of the children with atopic disease were found positive in the Phadiatop Paediatric, 17% of the children who were considered non-atopic on clinical grounds, were positive both in the Phadiatop Paediatric and in the combination "Phadiatop + mixed-food-RAST".

The IgE response to inhaled dust of pancreatic powder was studied with sera from two employees of a pharmacy. IgE from both sera was directed against both porcine and bovine trypsin preparations. The major IgE-binding structures had an isoelectric point in the pH 8 to 9 range.
