Background: The role of plasma cholesterol in impairing arterial function and elasticity remains unclear. We evaluated arterial stiffness, measured locally in the common carotid artery by high-resolution echo-tracking, and aortic stiffness, using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) (the "gold-standard" measurement of arterial stiffness), in treatment-naive patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH).
Methods: The study included 66 patients with FH (10-66 years old) and 57 first-degree relatives without FH (11-61 years old).

Context And Objective: Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and physical fitness (PF) are positively associated with glucose tolerance. Such associations may be partly conditioned by microvascular function, which is a common correlate to MVPA, PF, and glucose tolerance. To test this hypothesis, the present study sought to investigate independent associations of MVPA and PF with glucose tolerance and to what extent these associations are mediated by microvascular function.

Muscular weakness and muscle wasting may often be observed in critically ill patients on intensive care units (ICUs) and may present as failure to wean from mechanical ventilation. Importantly, mounting data demonstrate that mechanical ventilation itself may induce progressive dysfunction of the main respiratory muscle, i.e.

Background: High-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays have provided a significant contribution for the early diagnosis of cardiovascular events. However, elevated cardiac troponin levels may occur in other clinical situations as supraventricular tachyarrhythmias with concerns about the mechanism of this elevation.
Objectives And Methods: The goal of this study was to describe the performance of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) assay in patients presenting to the emergency department with a primary diagnosis of supraventricular tachyarrhythmia and to evaluate its relation with cardiovascular events during follow-up.

Background: Stress echocardiography (SE) is dependent on subjective interpretations. As a prelude to the International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches (ISCHEMIA) Trial, potential sites were required to submit two SE, one with moderate or severe left ventricular (LV) myocardial ischemia and one with mild ischemia. We evaluated the concordance of site and core lab interpretations.

Introduction: Computed tomography (CT)-based attenuation correction (AC) improves the accuracy of standard myocardial perfusion SPECT. Most dedicated cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) SPECT cameras are not equipped with an integrated CT component. We aimed to determine the impact of AC on diagnostic performance of CZT SPECT using co-registration with an external low-dose CT.

This paper presents a novel processing method for heart sound signal: the statistical time growing neural network (STGNN). The STGNN performs a robust classification by merging supervised and unsupervised statistical methods to overcome non-stationary behavior of the signal. By combining available preprocessing and segmentation techniques and the STGNN classifier, we build an automatic tool for screening children with isolated BAV, the congenital heart malformation which can lead to serious cardiovascular lesions.

Across Europe, the role of the welfare state is constantly being questioned and even eroded. At the same time, funding sources for post-graduate medical education and training are under attack as regulators review the working relationships between physicians and industry. Both of these issues have profound consequences for cardiologists and their patients, and were, therefore, chosen as the themes of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) 2014 Spring Summit held at Heart House, Sophia Antipolis, 25-26 March 2014.

Background: Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress might be considered the key mechanisms of aging. Insulin resistance (IR) is a phenomenon related to inflammatory and oxidative stress. We tested the hypothesis that IR may be associated with cellular senescence, as measured by leukocyte telomere length (LTL), and arterial stiffness (core feature of arterial aging), as measured by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (c-f PWV).

Background: Cardiac-specific troponin detected with the new high-sensitivity assays can be chronically elevated in response to cardiovascular comorbidities and confer important prognostic information, in the absence of unstable coronary syndromes. Both diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease are known predictors of troponin elevation. It is not known whether diabetic patients with coronary artery disease have different levels of troponin compared with diabetic patients with normal coronary arteries.

Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an independent risk factor for stroke, increasing the risk five-fold. Strokes in patients with AF are more likely than other embolic strokes to be fatal or cause severe disability and are associated with higher healthcare costs, but they are also preventable.

Background: Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a genetic disorder causing life-threatening arrhythmias whenever sympathetic activity increases. β-Βlockers are the mainstay of therapy; when they fail, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are used but often cause multiple shocks. Preliminary results with flecainide appear encouraging.

Novel oral anti-coagulants (NOACs) are increasingly being used in clinical practice and are set to almost entirely replace the vitamin K antagonists, such as warfarin, in the near future. Similarly, new antiplatelet agents are now regularly used in place of older agents, such as aspirin and clopidogrel. In an ageing population, with an increasing burden of complex comorbidities, urologists will frequently encounter patients who will be using such agents.

A unique coagulation inhibitor prolonging whole-blood clotting time was described more than 50 years ago in two patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The immunoglobulin nature of the inhibitor and its interaction with antiphospholipid antibodies was later demonstrated and the term "lupus anticoagulant (LA)" was coined to describe this laboratory finding. It soon became apparent that LA was a misnomer as it is often found in plasma from patients with clinical conditions other than SLE and is associated with thromboembolic events that may occur in otherwise healthy individuals.
