Background: Metformin is an inhibitor of oxidative phosphorylation that displays an array of anticancer activities. The interference of metformin with the activity of multi-drug resistance systems in cancer cells has been reported. However, the consequences of the acquired chemoresistance for the adaptative responses of cancer cells to metformin-induced stress and for their phenotypic evolution remain unaddressed.

Introduction: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare malignant tumour of the parafollicular C-cells with an unpredictable clinical course and currently suboptimal diagnostic and therapeutic options, in particular in advanced disease. Overexpression of cholecystokinin-2 receptors (CCK2R) represents a promising avenue to diagnostic imaging and targeted therapy, ideally through a theranostic approach.
Materials And Methods: A translational study (GRAN-T-MTC) conducted through a Phase I multicentre clinical trial of the indium-111 labelled CP04 ([In]In-CP04), a CCK2R-seeking ligand was initiated with the goal of developing a theranostic compound.

Amplicon-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the 16S ribosomal RNA (16S) regions is a culture-free method used to identify and analyze Procaryota occurring within a given sample. The prokaryotic 16S rRNA gene contains conserved regions and nine variable regions (V1-V9) frequently used for phylogenetic classification of genus or species in diverse microbial populations. This work compares the accuracy and efficacy of two platforms, iSeq and MiSeq from Illumina, used in sequencing 16S rRNA.

In patients with acutely changing kidney function, equations used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) must be adjusted for dynamic changes in the concentrations of filtration markers (kinetic eGFR, KeGFR). The aim of our study was to evaluate serum creatinine-based KeGFR in patients in the early phase of acute pancreatitis (AP) as a marker of changing renal function and as a predictor of AP severity. We retrospectively calculated KeGFR on day 2 and 3 of the hospital stay in a group of 147 adult patients admitted within 24 h from the onset of AP symptoms and treated in two secondary-care hospitals.

Chemerin is one of the specialized pro-resolving mediators that participate in the early phase of inflammation and contribute to the initiation of the pro-resolving response. There is a paucity of data regarding the time course of chemerin during acute infections. We aimed to evaluate the sequence of inflammatory responses in the acute COVID-19 phase throughout onset and resolution of inflammation.

Background: Fontan surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) causes tremendous systemic stress and inflammatory responses, affecting postoperative organ function, morbidity, and mortality. Although this reaction triggers partially protective anti-inflammatory responses, it is harmful in patients with single ventricle congenital heart defects. Despite decades of research, an effective anti-inflammatory and stress defense strategy is lacking.

Plants-based natural compounds are well-identified and recognized chemoprotective agents that can be used for primary and secondary cancer prevention, as they have proven efficacy and fewer side effects. In today's scenario, when cancer cases rapidly increase in developed and developing countries, the anti-cancerous plant-based compounds become highly imperative. Among others, the Asteraceae (Compositae) family's plants are rich in sesquiterpenoid lactones, a subclass of terpenoids with wide structural diversity, and offer unique anti-cancerous effects.

Observations from numerous clinical, epidemiological and serological studies link periodontitis with severity and progression of rheumatoid arthritis. The strong association is observed despite totally different aetiology of these two diseases, periodontitis being driven by dysbiotic microbial flora on the tooth surface below the gum line, while rheumatoid arthritis being the autoimmune disease powered by anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs). Here we discuss genetic and environmental risk factors underlying development of both diseases with special emphasis on bacteria implicated in pathogenicity of periodontitis.

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated with a prothrombotic tendency including increased factor (F) VIIa-antithrombin (FVIIa-AT) complexes, a measure of tissue factor (TF) exposure, and activated FXI (FXIa). We investigated whether increased FVIIa-AT complexes are associated with FXIa and active TF and if major adverse clinical outcomes are predicted by the complexes in CAD.
Methods: In 120 CAD patients, we assessed FVIIa-AT complex concentrations and the presence of circulating FXIa and active TF.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects joints but should be considered as a syndrome that also includes extra-articular manifestations and comorbidities. Human-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and their differentiated derivatives may be of special interest in the investigation of complex pathophysiology of RA. In this study, we demonstrate and compare the generation of hiPSC from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) from RA patients.

Atherosclerosis, a common age-related disease, is characterized by intense immunological activity. Atherosclerotic plaque is composed of endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), lipids and immune cells infiltrating from the blood. During progression of the disease, VSMCs undergo senescence within the plaque and secrete SASP (senescence-associated secretory phenotype) factors that can actively modulate plaque microenvironment.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is very common and affects approximately 1/3 of the world's human population. There are strong research data that some probiotics, such as and improve iron absorption and influence the course of anemia. Furthermore, prebiotics, including galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and fructooligosaccharides (FOS), increase iron bioavailability and decrease its destructive effect on the intestinal microbiota.

The proper functioning of adipose tissue is one of the factors in maintaining energy homeostasis. Adipocytes not only store lipids but also produce active molecules such as adipokines and adipocytokines, which are involved in many functions of adipose tissue, including the secretion of hormones that regulate energy and lipid metabolism. Inflammation has been shown to underlie the deregulation of adipose tissue function.

Objectives: This systematic review aimed to identify the characteristics and application of citation analyses in evaluating the justification, design, and placement of the research results of clinical health studies in the context of earlier similar studies.
Study Design And Setting: We searched MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), and the Cochrane Methodology Register for meta-research studies. We included meta-research studies assessing whether researchers used earlier similar studies and/or systematic reviews of such studies to inform the justification or design of a new study, whether researchers used systematic reviews to inform the interpretation of new results, and meta-research studies assessing whether redundant studies were published within a specific area.
