Approximately 22 ​% of the United States population communicates in a non-English language, potentially impacting healthcare communication and outcomes. Few studies have examined the association between non-English primary language (NEPL) and surgical outcomes and none to our knowledge in patients undergoing arteriovenous fistula creation within a safety net system. In this study, we conducted a retrospective analysis on adults who underwent AVF creation for hemodialysis access between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2019.

Background: Leaving before medically advised (BMA) is a significant issue in the US healthcare system, leading to adverse health outcomes and increased costs. Despite previous research, multi-year studies using up-to-date nationwide emergency department (ED) data, are limited. This study examines factors associated with leaving BMA from EDs and trends over time, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bladder cancer (BLCA) genomic profiling has identified molecular subtypes with distinct clinical characteristics and variable sensitivities to frontline therapy. BLCAs can be categorized into luminal or basal subtypes based on their gene expression. We comprehensively characterized nine human BLCA cell lines (UC3, UC6, UC9, UC13, UC14, T24, SCaBER, RT4V6 and RT112) into molecular subtypes using orthotopic xenograft models.

Speech Kinematics and Perioral Muscle Activity Are Influenced by Stroop Effects.

Purpose: The current project aimed to examine the effects of two experimental cognitive-linguistic paradigms, the Stroop task and a primed Stroop task, on speech kinematics and perioral muscle activation.

Method: Acoustic, kinematic, and surface electromyographic data were collected from the verbal responses of 30 young adult healthy control participants in choice response, classic Stroop, and primed Stroop tasks. The classic and primed Stroop tasks included congruent and incongruent trials.

A Neurocysticercosis Case from Timor-Leste, A Previously Unidentified Region of Human Taeniasis Endemicity.

Neurocysticercosis, a central nervous system infection caused by the zoonotic parasite Taenia solium, is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide. It is common in areas with extensive pig farming and pork consumption. This report presents an unusual case of neurocysticercosis in a 28-year-old male from Timor-Leste, a region of nonendemicity for human cases of Taenia solium.

Person-Specific Analyses of Smartphone Use and Mental Health: An Intensive Longitudinal Study Over One Year.

Background: Contrary to popular concerns about the harmful effects of media use on mental health, research on this relationship is ambiguous, stalling advances in theory, interventions, and policy. Scientific explorations of the relationship between media and mental health have mostly found null or small associations, with the results often blamed on the use of cross-sectional study designs or imprecise measures of media use and mental health.

Objective: This exploratory empirical demonstration aimed to answer whether mental health effects are associated with media use experiences by (1) redirecting research investments to granular and intensive longitudinal recordings of digital experiences to build models of media use and mental health for single individuals over the course of one entire year, (2) using new metrics of fragmented media use to propose explanations of mental health effects that will advance person-specific theorizing in media psychology, and (3) identifying combinations of media behaviors and mental health symptoms that may be more useful for studying media effects than single measures of dosage and affect or assessments of clinical symptoms related to specific disorders.

Colorimetric Xylenol Orange: A Long-Buried Aggregation-Induced Emission Dye and Restricted Rotation for Dual-Mode Sensing of pH and Metal Ions.

As the third largest class of dyes in the world, triphenylmethane dyes are widely applied in colorimetric sensing. However, triphenylmethane dyes are commonly nonfluorescent, which limits their sensing applications. It is worthwhile to study the fluorescence off/on control of triphenylmethane dyes and promote the applications of triphenylmethane dyes in sensing technology.

Prevention of liver cancer in the era of next-generation antivirals and obesity epidemic.

Preventive interventions are expected to substantially improve the prognosis of patients with primary liver cancer, predominantly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma. HCC prevention is challenging in the face of the evolving etiological landscape, particularly the sharp increase in obesity-associated metabolic disorders, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Next-generation anti-HCV and HBV drugs have substantially reduced, but not eliminated, the risk of HCC and have given way to new challenges in identifying at-risk patients.

Adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma following curative resection: A randomized, open-label, phase 3 trial.

Background Aims: The role of adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following curative resection remains controversial. We aimed to determine the effectiveness of postoperative adjuvant TACE in HCC patients.

Approach Results: In this randomized phase 3 trial, histologically confirmed HCC patients (AJCC TNM stage I and II) were randomly assigned (1:1) to adjuvant TACE or observation groups.

Salvage Autologous Transplant in Relapsed Multiple Myeloma: Long-Term Follow-Up of the Phase 3 GMMG ReLApsE Trial.

The multicenter, phase III GMMG ReLApsE trial (EudraCT-No:2009-013856-61) randomized relapsed and/or refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) patients equally to lenalidomide/dexamethasone (LEN/DEX, 25mg days 1-21/40mg weekly, 4-week cycles) re-induction, salvage high dose chemotherapy (sHDCT, melphalan 200mg/m2), autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) and LEN maintenance (10mg/day; transplant arm, n=139) versus continuous LEN/DEX (control arm, n=138). Ninety-four percent of patients had received frontline HDCT/ASCT. We report an updated analysis of survival endpoints with a median follow-up of 99 months.

Large clones of Clonal Hematopoiesis affect outcome in Mantle Cell Lymphoma: Results from The FIL MCL0208 Clinical Trial.

Although recent evidence suggests that myeloid clonal hematopoiesis (M-CH) may influence lymphoma clinical outcome, its impact in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) remains unclear. Here, we report a comprehensive NGS-based analysis of the M-CH mutational landscape at baseline and follow-up in patients enrolled in the Fondazione Italiana Linfomi (FIL) MCL0208 phase 3 trial (NCT02354313), evaluating lenalidomide maintenance versus observation after chemoimmunotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in untreated young MCL patients. Overall, 254/300 (85%) enrolled patients (median age 57 years [32-66]) had a baseline sample available for CH analysis.

Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a heterogenous autoimmune disorder diagnosed by excluding other conditions. Misdiagnosis of primary ITP occurs in patients with inherited thrombocytopenia and primary immunodeficiency syndromes. This study investigates whether genetic testing for inherited thrombocytopenia or primary immunodeficiency can enhance diagnostic accuracy in ITP, and guide treatment strategies.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) social chatbots represent a major advancement in merging technology with mental health, offering benefits through natural and emotional communication. Unlike task-oriented chatbots, social chatbots build relationships and provide social support, which can positively impact mental health outcomes like loneliness and social anxiety. However, the specific effects and mechanisms through which these chatbots influence mental health remain underexplored.

Acceptance, Safety, and Effect Sizes in Online Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: Interventional Pilot Study.

Background: The potential of telehealth psychotherapy (ie, the online delivery of treatment via a video web-based platform) is gaining increased attention. However, there is skepticism about its acceptance, safety, and efficacy for patients with high emotional and behavioral dysregulation.

Objective: This study aims to provide initial effect size estimates of symptom change from pre- to post treatment, and the acceptance and safety of telehealth dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD).

Predictors of severity factors associated with severe scrub typhus among children in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Background Objectives: Scrub typhus is an acute febrile zoonotic disease caused by the obligate intracellular gram-negative bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi. Growing data over the last few years on the Indian subcontinent suggest that it is one of the most widespread but under-reported diseases. The study aimed to document the clinical and paraclinical profile and evaluate complications of scrub typhus in severe and nonsevere pediatric age groups.

Precision Medicine Proof-of-Concept Study of a TNF Inhibitor in FSGS and Treatment-Resistant Minimal Change Disease.

Background: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and treatment-resistant minimal change disease (TR-MCD) are heterogeneous disorders with subgroups defined by distinct underlying mechanisms of glomerular and tubulointerstitial injury. A non-invasive urinary biomarker profile has been generated to identify patients with intra-kidney tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-activation and to predict response to anti-TNF treatment. We conducted this proof-of-concept, multi-center, open-label clinical trial to test the hypothesis that in patients with FSGS or TR-MCD and evidence of intra-renal TNF activation based on their biomarker profile, short-term treatment with adalimumab would reverse the elevated urinary excretion of MCP-1 and TIMP-1.
