Electrosynthesis of single-crystalline metallic and intermetallic particles with a preferred orientation onto liquid metal electrodes has been performed. Liquid gallium electrodes immersed in aqueous alkaline electrolytes without any molecular additive or external solid seeding substrates were used to electroreduce separately Pb, Bi, Pd, and Mn. The crystallinity, composition, and orientation of the electrodeposition products were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

Wildfires significantly impact air quality and climate, including through the production of aerosols that can nucleate cloud droplets and participate in aqueous-phase reactions. Cloud water was collected during the summer months (June-September) of 2010-2017 at Whiteface Mountain, New York and examined for biomass burning influence. Cloud water samples were classified by their smoke influence based on backward air mass trajectories and satellite-detected smoke.

Cesium-halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have gained tremendous interest as quantum emitters in quantum information processing applications due to their optical and photophysical properties. However, engineering excitonic states in quantum dots requires a deep knowledge of the coherent dynamics of their excitons at a single-particle level. Here, we use femtosecond time-resolved two-photon near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) to reveal coherences involving a single cesium lead bromide perovskite QD (CsPbBr) at room temperature.

Viperin is a broadly conserved radical SAM enzyme that synthesizes the antiviral nucleotide ddhCTP. In higher animals, viperin expression also accelerates the degradation of various cellular and viral proteins necessary for viral replication; however, the details of this process remain largely unknown. Here, we show that viperin activates a component of the protein ubiquitination machinery, which plays an important role in both protein degradation and immune signaling pathways.

Marine cloud brightening (MCB) is proposed to offset global warming by emitting sea salt aerosols to the tropical marine boundary layer, which increases aerosol and cloud albedo. Sea salt aerosol is the main source of tropospheric reactive chlorine (Cl ) and bromine (Br ). The effects of additional sea salt on atmospheric chemistry have not been explored.

The effect of sample extraction and preparation on neuropeptidomic analysis of brain tissue by capillary liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was investigated. In agreement with previous reports, analysis of peptide extracts of brain tissue from animals sacrificed by microwave irradiation, which fixes tissue, allows identification of neuronally derived peptides whereas similar analysis of tissue from animals sacrificed without fixation does not. A comparison of a physical method for cell lysis (sonication) to physical combined with chemical cell lysis (sonication with detergent treatment) revealed that the latter method increased the number of neuronally derived peptides positively identified by approximately 3-fold, from 16 to 44, for analysis of microwave-fixed rat striatum.
