Diazirines are versatile carbene precursors that are extensively used in biological target identification experiments. However, their photo-activation wavelength ( 365 nm) precludes their use in living organisms. Here we show that a reconceptualization of the diazirine hybridization state leads to conjugation of the diazirine motif to longer-wavelength chromophores.

Silver thiolate nanoclusters have been functionalized with a chiral amino alcohol ligand that has previously shown high catalytic efficiency in different asymmetric reactions. The as-developed nanostructured catalyst, which can be easily recovered by simple centrifugation, has been tested in the addition of nitromethane to aromatic aldehydes, showing the same catalytic activity as the homogeneous ligand. Moreover, it was reused for two further recycling cycles without loss of efficiency.

Photoacoustic signal detection has been used to build a new strategy to determine the mesoscale self-assembly of metal nanoparticles in terms of size distribution and aggregate packing density (metal nanoparticle filling factor). A synergistic approach integrating photoacoustic signal and theoretical studies, validated by conventional light scattering and electron microscopy techniques, allows us to obtain a well-defined morphological interpretation of nanoparticle-based super-aggregates. By pumping light in a complex system, the acousto-thermal effect was listened to, providing information on the aggregation phenomena.

Human tyrosinase (hTYR) and tyrosinase-related protein 1 (hTYRP1) are closely-related enzymes involved in the synthesis of melanin, which are selectively expressed in melanocytes and, in a pathological context, in melanoma lesions. We used a previously described tyrosinase inhibitor (Thiamidol™) and DNA-encoded library technology for the discovery of novel hTYR and hTYRP1 ligands, that could be used as vehicles for melanoma targeting. Performing selections with DNA-encoded libraries, we discovered novel ligands capable of binding to both hTYR and hTYRP1.

In the past few years, characterization of the protein corona (PC) that forms around liposomal systems has gained increasing interest for the development of novel therapeutic and diagnostic technologies. At the crossroads of fast-moving research fields, the interdisciplinarity of protein corona investigations poses challenges for experimental design and reporting. Isolation of liposome-protein complexes from biological fluids has been identified as a fundamental step of the entire workflow of PC characterization but exact specifications for conditions to optimize pelleting remain elusive.

In this work, an innovative screening platform is developed and validated for the on site detection of cannabinoids in hemp seed oil, for food safety control of commercial products. The novelty of this completely automated tool consists of a miniaturized NIR spectrometer operating in a wireless mode that permits processing samples in a rapid and accurate way and to obtain in a single click the early detection of a residual amount of cannabinoids in oil, including cannabidiol (CBD), the psychoactive Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA). Simulated samples were realized to instruct the platform and prediction models were developed by chemometric analysis of the NIR spectra using partial least square regression algorithms.

Article Synopsis
  • A gas-phase study explored how d-fructose dehydrates in the presence of various bases using mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations.
  • Electrospray ionization produced protonated d-fructose addition products, allowing the investigation of intermediates and reaction pathways.
  • The study concluded that the final product, protonated 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF), forms more effectively with specific bases that remain clustered throughout the dehydration process.

In the field of forensic toxicology, the use of non-destructive and easy-to-use analytical techniques deserves remarkable attention, especially in those situations involving public health and security. In addition, the miniaturization and portability of one-touch devices for the detection of specific threats is required more and more. In this study, a novel on-site MicroNIR/Chemometric platform was developed to perform a real-time prediction of cocaine and its metabolites in non pre-treated oral fluid.

Nano-structured polymers delivering an antibiotic for the prevention of medical device-related infections were developed. Systems consisted of bovine serum albumin or polyallylamine nanoparticles alone or entrapped in a polyurethane and then loaded with cefamandole nafate, chosen as a drug model. Results showed that nanoparticles alone were able to adsorb high antibiotic amounts due to their high surface/volume ratio.
