Arterial conduits for coronary bypass grafting: the set-point concept.

Eur Heart J

December 2024

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Weill Cornell Medicine, 525 E 68th Street, New York, NY 10021, USA.

Endothelial cells control the vascular tone of arterial grafts used for coronary artery bypass surgery and react to changes in local shear stress. The vascular adaptations induced by endothelial cell activation affect the outcome of surgical grafts and can be predicted based on the set-point theory. In this Hypothesis piece, it is proposed that the set-point concept should inform surgical decision making for coronary artery bypass surgery.

Background: Cardiac macrophages are a heterogeneous population with high plasticity and adaptability, and their mechanisms in heart failure (HF) remain poorly elucidated.

Methods: We used single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing data to reveal the heterogeneity of non-cardiomyocytes and assess the immunoreactivity of each subpopulation. Additionally, we employed four integrated machine learning algorithms to identify macrophage-related genes with diagnostic value, and in vivo validation was performed.

Background: Congenital tracheal stenosis (CTS) is a rare but life-threatening malformation of the trachea. Surgical reconstruction is the treatment of choice in symptomatic cases which is highly risky and is rarely performed in extremely premature infants. With this, reporting a case of CTS managed by tracheal reconstructive surgery under ECMO in a baby weighing 1.

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare soft tissue tumour that rarely behaves malignant. We report a radical resection of a mediastinal AFH, which grew invasively into the pulmonary artery wall, was adherent to the posterior aorta and close to the main stem of the left coronary artery. A transection of the aorta was performed using cardiopulmonary bypass and cardioplegic arrest for a safe and radical removal that resulted in symptom relief.

Surgical and Medical Cardiovascular Specialties Direction, Instituto Nacional de Cardiología Ignacio Chávez, Mexico City, Mexico.

Background: Latin American registries of clinical and demographic profiles of ACHD are scarce. International guidelines classify disease complexity with different approaches. With these two regards, a registry was carried out to examine factors associated with mortality and to compare severity classifications in our population.

Background: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital heart defect (reported incidence of 0.5%-2%) and is commonly associated with proximal aortic dilation. Patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) of BAV have been shown to have worse pre-operative left ventricular (LV) function as well as a higher incidence of post-operative heart failure hospitalization when compared with analogous patients with tri-leaflet aortic valve disease.

Introduction: The heart team approach is now the standard of care for patients with complex coronary artery disease; however, the definition of a heart team is variable. We embarked on a project to create an extended, multidisciplinary heart team to evaluate patients we deemed high risk for coronary revascularization. In doing so, we created a new service, workflow, and paradigm.

3D bioprinting of the airways and lungs for applications in tissue engineering and in vitro models.

J Tissue Eng

December 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Air Force Medical University, Xi'an, People's Republic of China.

Tissue engineering and in vitro modeling of the airways and lungs in the respiratory system are of substantial research and clinical importance. In vitro airway and lung models aim to improve treatment options for airway and lung repair and advance respiratory pathophysiological research. The construction of biomimetic native airways and lungs with tissue-specific biological, mechanical, and configurable features remains challenging.

Background: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an important cause of death and disability. Advances in catheter-directed therapies have led to the use of devices, such as the Inari FlowTriever and Penumbra Indigo system for aspiration thrombectomy (AT) for both massive and sub-massive PE. However, limited data exist on causes of procedural mortality.

-driven CX3CR1 PD-L1 phagocytes route to tumor tissues and reshape tumor microenvironment.

Gut Microbes

December 2025

Department of Microbial and Biochemical Pharmacy, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

The intracellular bacterium (Fn) mediates tumorigenesis and progression in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the origin of intratumoral Fn and the role of Fn-infected immunocytes in the tumor microenvironment remain unclear. Here, we observed that Fn-infected neutrophils/macrophages (PMNs/MΦs), especially PMNs, accumulate in tumor tissues and fecal Fn abundance correlates positively with an abundance of blood PD-L1 PMNs in CRC patients.

Psychological and behavioral dimensions in cardiac arrest survivors and their families: A state-of-the-art review.

Neurotherapeutics

December 2024

Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, Basildon, Essex, UK; MTRC, Anglia Ruskin School of Medicine, Chelmsford, Essex, UK.

This article aims to highlight high-quality observational and intervention studies focused on promoting psychological well-being among cardiac arrest (CA) survivors and their families. Following CA, many patients experience significant psychological distress, including depression, generalized anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. Recent studies indicate that this distress can narrow patients' focus, resulting in heightened awareness of cardiac signals-such as fluctuations in heart rate or blood pressure-that lead to constant monitoring and increased anxiety.
