X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) deficiency causes refractory inflammatory bowel disease. The XIAP protein plays a pivotal role in the pro-inflammatory response through the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing signaling pathway that is important in mucosal homeostasis.
