Sex determination in zebrafish by manual approaches according to current guidelines relies on human observation. These guidelines for sex recognition have proven to be subjective and highly labor-intensive. To address this problem, we present a methodology to automatically classify the phenotypic sex using two machine learning methods: Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) based on the whole fish appearance and Support Vector Machine (SVM) based on caudal fin coloration.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are trying to understand how many giant dinosaurs, called sauropods, could live in their environment based on the food available to them.
  • A new study found that as CO2 levels rise, the quality of plant food for other creatures, like insects, actually gets worse, but it might not be the same for huge plant-eating dinosaurs.
  • The research shows that different plant types reacted differently to CO2 levels, which means the food for sauropods might have been better than previously thought, challenging the idea that their food quality was limited by Mesozoic CO2 levels.
