Blending carbon particles (CPs) and nanoscale bioactive cerium dioxide is a promising approach for designing composites for biomedical applications, combining the sorption and antioxidant potentials of each individual component. To address this issue, it is crucial to assess the correlation between the components' ratio, physicochemical parameters, and biofunctionality of the composites. Thus, the current research was aimed at fabricating C@CeO composites with different molar ratios and the examination of how the parameters of the composites affect their bioactivity.

Fluorination is one of the most efficient and universal strategies to increase the hydrophobicity of materials and consequently their water stability. Zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), which have limited stability in aqueous media and even lower stability when synthesized on a nanometric scale, can greatly benefit from the incorporation of fluorine atoms, not only to improve their stability but also to provide additional properties. Herein, we report the preparation of two different fluorinated ZIFs through a simple and scalable approach by using mixed ligands [2-methylimidazole, as a common ligand, and 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-imidazole ( linker) or 2-methyl-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1-imidazole ( linker) as a dopant], demonstrating the high versatility of the synthetic method developed to incorporate different fluorine-containing imidazole-based ligands.

The particulate and soluble matter present in aerosols from combustible cigarettes (CCs) and Heated Tobacco Products (HTPs) was collected in liquid water. These liquids, yellowish in the experiments with cigarettes and colourless after using HTPs, were analysed by Laser Diffraction (LD) and by Transmission Electron Microscopy coupled to Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDX) to study the amount, size, composition, and other features of the particulate matter (PM) present in the collected aerosols. The particulate matter concentration in HTPs samples is below the limit of quantification for LD, and only samples from cigarettes show a particulate matter concentration above such limit.

Our study unveils a pioneering methodology that effectively distributes Pd species within a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). We demonstrate that Pd can be encapsulated within ZIF-8 as atomically dispersed Pd species that function as an excited-state transition metal catalyst for promoting carbon-carbon (C-C) cross-couplings at room temperature using visible light as the driving force. Furthermore, the same material can be reduced at 250 °C, forming Pd metal nanoparticles encapsulated in ZIF-8.

Helical molecules have been proposed as candidates for producing spin-polarized currents, even at room conditions, due to their chiral asymmetry. However, describing their transport mechanism in single molecular junctions is not straightforward. In this work, we show the synthesis of two novel kinds of dithia[11]helicenes to study their electronic transport in break junctions among a series of three helical molecules: dithia[]helicenes, with = 7, 9, and 11 molecular units.

Strain is a powerful tool for tuning the properties of two-dimensional materials. Here, we investigated the effects of large, uniform biaxial compressive strain on the superconducting phase transition of multilayered 2H-NbSe flakes. We observed a consistent decrease in the critical temperature of NbSe flakes induced by the large thermal compression of a polymeric substrate (>1.

Thus, we have developed a robust iron-based heterogeneous photocatalyst that can convert the exhaust gas from the car into CO with an exceptional production rate of 145 μmol g h. We characterized this photocatalyst by PXRD, XPS, ssNMR, EXAFS, XANES, HR-TEM, and further provided mechanistic experiments, and multi-scale/level computational studies.

Controlling the thickness and uniformity of biomaterial films is crucial for their application in various fields including sensing and bioelectronics. In this work, we investigated film assemblies of an engineered repeat protein─specifically, the consensus tetratricopeptide repeat (CTPR) protein ─a system with unique robustness and tunability. We propose the use of microreflectance spectroscopy and apparent color inspection for the quick assessment of the thickness and uniformity of protein-based biomaterial films deposited on oxidized silicon substrates.

Graphene-like molecules with multiple zigzag edges are emerging as promising gain materials for organic lasers. Their emission wavelengths can vary widely, ranging from visible to near-infrared (NIR), as the molecular size increases. Specifically, rhombus-shaped molecular graphenes with two pairs of parallel zigzag edges, known as [n]rhombenes, are excellent candidates for NIR lasers due to their small energy gaps.

Due to the need for decarbonization in energy generation, it is necessary to develop electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a key process in energy generation systems such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Perovskite-carbon material composites have emerged as active and stable electrocatalysts for the ORR, and the interaction between both components is a crucial aspect for electrocatalytic activity. This work explores different mixing methods for composite preparation, including mortar mixing, ball milling, and hydrothermal and thermal treatments.

The electronic structure of 7/9-AGNR superlattices with up to eight unit cells has been studied by means of state-of-the-art Density Functional Theory (DFT) and also by two model Hamiltonians, the first one including only local interactions (Hubbard model, Hu) while the second one is extended to allow long-range Coulomb interactions (Pariser, Parr and Pople model, PPP). Both are solved within mean field approximation. At this approximation level, our calculations show that 7/9 interfaces are better described by spin non-polarized solutions than by spin-polarized wavefunctions.

This study investigates the origin of low-pressure hysteresis (LPH) in the adsorption and desorption of three different probe molecules: carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon, across various adsorption temperatures (from cryogenic to room temperature), and within five different carbon materials: synthetic carbons (pristine and one post-synthetically oxidized) and natural coal. Significant attention is dedicated to elucidating LPH in oxidized samples outgassed at various temperatures (120-350 °C). Experimental results show that insufficient outgassing temperature can lead to unreliable data due to artificial LPH and significantly underestimated textural properties, primarily caused by porosity blockage from substances like moisture.

Carbon-encapsulated iron oxide nanoparticles (CE-nFe) have been obtained from an industrial waste (oil mill wastewater-OMW, as a carbonaceous source), and using iron sulfate as metallic precursor. In an initial step, the hydrochar obtained has been thermally activated under an inert atmosphere at three different temperatures (600 °C, 800 °C and 1000 °C). The thermal treatment promotes the development of core-shell nanoparticles, with an inner core of α-Fe/FeO, surrounded by a well-defined graphite shell.

The combination of specific van der Waals semiconductors in vertical stacks leads to atomically sharp heterointerfaces with unique properties, offering versatility and additional functionality for thin, flexible, optoelectronic devices. In this work, we demonstrate heterostructures built from single-layer MoS (n-type) and multilayer FePS (p-type) as multifunctional p-n junctions where robust photoluminescent light emission and broadband electrical photo-response coexist. This is made possible by the inherent properties of the materials involved and the precise energy band alignment at their interface, which preserves the photoluminescent emission provided by the single-layer MoS and confers exceptional tunability to the system.

Ordinary metals contain electron liquids within well-defined 'Fermi' surfaces at which the electrons behave as if they were non-interacting. In the absence of transitions to entirely new phases such as insulators or superconductors, interactions between electrons induce scattering that is quadratic in the deviation of the binding energy from the Fermi level. A long-standing puzzle is that certain materials do not fit this 'Fermi liquid' description.
