RNA processing is a highly conserved mechanism that serves as a pivotal regulator of gene expression. Alternative processing generates transcripts that can still be translated but lead to potentially nonfunctional proteins. A plethora of respiratory viruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), strategically manipulate the host's RNA processing machinery to circumvent antiviral responses.

Thermal pollution creates substantial challenges that alter energy demand and produce reactive oxygen species that damage fish DNA, proteins, and lipids. Rhamdia voulezi is a species of fish native to the Iguaçu river, Paraná, Brazil, that does not have scientific records of minimum (CT) and maximum (CT) temperatures required for survival. As it is a top predator species in the food chain and lives at temperatures below 22 °C, the loss of the species can cause functional problems in controlling the ecosystem and energy flow.

A diet deficient in donors of methyl group, such as methionine, affects DNA methylation and hepatic lipid metabolism. Methionine also affects other epigenetic mechanisms, such as microRNAs. We investigated the effects of methionine-supplemented or methionine-deficient diets on the expression of chromatin-modifying genes, global DNA methylation, the expression and methylation of genes related to lipid metabolism, and the expression of microRNAs in mouse liver.

Background: We aimed to determine the cellular recruitment (leukocyte rolling and adhesion) by which the , () , and ) species in the mesenteric microcirculation of BALB/c mice.
Methods: Five experimental groups were considered: group 1 (); group 2 (); group 3 (); group 4 (control group with PBS); group 5 (negative control group), analyzed 3, 6, 12, and 24 h after parasite inoculation.
Results: Infections by the different species caused an increase in the number of rolling leukocytes: a peak at 6 h; and a peak at 3 h.

Background And Objective: Evidence point out promising anticancer activities of Dihydropyrimidinones (DHPM) and organoselenium compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic and antiproliferative potential of DHPM-derived selenoesters (Se-DHPM), as well as their molecular mechanisms of action.
Methods: Se-DHPM cytotoxicity was evaluated against cancer lines (HeLa, HepG2, and MCF-7) and normal cells (McCoy).

Objective: We researched articles that used photodynamic therapy (PDT) for skin wound healing in humans.
Methods: The systematic review was conducted through scientific articles that investigated the action of PDT on wound healing in humans, published from July 2005 to March 2017, in the data bases PubMed and LILACS.
Results: The main types of wound described in selected articles in this review were chronic ulcer and non-melanoma skin cancer.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants. Exposure to these chemicals has been associated with developmental neurotoxicity, endocrine dysfunctions, reproductive disorders, and hepatotoxicity. The widespread use of PBDE as flame retardants has culminated in daily exposure of humans and wildlife to these contaminants and resulted in their banned use.

The objective of this study was to perform a structural characterization and evaluate the in vitro safety profile and in vitro antioxidant activity of liquid crystalline systems (LCS) with and without retinyl palmitate (RP). LCS containing polyether functional siloxane (PFS) as a surfactant, silicon glycol copolymer (SGC) as oil phase, and water in the ratios 30 : 25 : 45 and 40 : 50 : 10 with (OLS(v) = RP-loaded opaque liquid system and TLS(v) = RP-loaded transparent liquid system, respectively) and without (OLS and TLS, respectively) RP were studied. Samples were characterized using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and rheology analysis.

One of the major disadvantages of the current cancer therapy is the suppression of the immune system. Brazilian flora is considered one of the most diverse in the world and many plants were found to contain active constituents that can be valuable sources of new drugs. The plant Indigofera suffruticosa was studied to determine its potential to stimulate the immune system and also to be effective against tumour cells.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an infection caused by abnormal yeast growth in the mucosa of the female genital tract which is commonly diagnosed in gynecology. The aim of this study was to correlate the frequency of yeasts and their respective species in asymptomatic women with different clinical manifestation of VVC; evaluate possible relationships between number of fungus colonies and symptoms in this pathology. All patients who visited the laboratory within a period of five months, for routine examinations of vaginal secretion, independent of the presence or absence of symptoms of VVC were included in this study.
