Article Synopsis
  • Shortened gestation leads to significant childhood health issues, and there's a need for public health initiatives to improve gestational age at birth, particularly in light of its connection to prenatal maternal depression.
  • This study involved 226 pregnant individuals in a randomized clinical trial comparing interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) to standard care, with evaluations on depression symptoms and gestational length conducted throughout pregnancy.
  • Results indicated that a reduction in prenatal depression, especially in those receiving IPT, was associated with a higher likelihood of delivering full-term babies (≥39 weeks), suggesting that treating maternal depression may positively impact gestation duration.

Higher prenatal anxiety predicts lower neonatal hair cortisol.

Psychoneuroendocrinology

July 2024

Department of Psychology, University of Denver, Denver, CO, USA; Department of Pediatrics, University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA.

Background: Prenatal glucocorticoids are one of the most widely proposed prenatal programming mechanisms, yet few studies exist that measure fetal cortisol via neonatal hair. Neonatal hair provides a window into the fetal experience and represents cortisol accumulation in the third trimester of pregnancy. In the current study, we test the links between two types of anxiety over the course of gestation (pregnancy-related anxiety and general anxiety) with neonatal hair cortisol.

Associations of Kidney Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Biomarkers with Markers of Inflammation in Individuals with CKD.

Kidney360

May 2024

Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Center for Translational Metabolism and Health, Institute for Public Health and Medicine, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois.

Article Synopsis
  • Lower baseline apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) indicates higher cortical fibrosis, which correlates with increased serum inflammation markers IL-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP).
  • No correlation was found between baseline cortical relaxation rate (R2*) and inflammation markers, suggesting that R2* may not reflect systemic inflammation.
  • The study evaluated 127 CKD participants, revealing that despite changes in kidney fMRI biomarkers, there was no significant association with changes in inflammatory markers over time.

Objectives: Given the increasing prevalence of obesity and need for effective interventions, there is a growing interest in understanding how an individual's body image can inform obesity prevention and management. This study's objective was to examine the use of silhouette showcards to measure body size perception compared with measured body mass index, and assess body size dissatisfaction, in three different African-origin populations spanning the epidemiological transition. An ancillary objective was to investigate associations between body size perception and dissatisfaction with diabetes and hypertension.

Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Background: Adolescent solid organ transplant recipients (aSOTRs) who received three doses of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine experience high seroconversion rates and antibody persistence for up to 3 months. Long-term antibody durability beyond this timeframe following three doses of the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine remains unknown. We describe antibody responses 6 months following the third vaccine dose (D3) of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination among aSOTRs.

Skiing and snowboarding are popular competitive and recreational sports that can be associated with significant injury. Previous studies of skiing and snowboarding injuries have been conducted, but studies evaluating injury types and patterns over long periods of time are needed to drive effective injury prevention efforts. We hypothesized that injury patterns would differ among snowboarders and skiers and that the number of injuries remained constant over time.

The left-handed Z-conformation of nucleic acids can be adopted by both DNA and RNA when bound by Zα domains found within a variety of innate immune response proteins. Zα domains stabilize this higher-energy conformation by making specific interactions with the unique geometry of Z-DNA/Z-RNA. However, the mechanism by which a right-handed helix contorts to become left-handed in the presence of proteins, including the intermediate steps involved, is poorly understood.

Cow's milk allergy is rare in exclusively breastfed infants. To support the continuation of breastfeeding an infant after diagnosis with a cow's milk allergy, it is critical to examine the evidence for and against any form of cow's milk elimination diet for lactating mothers. In this narrative review, we highlight the lack of high-quality evidence, hence subsequent controversy, regarding whether the minuscule quantities of cow's milk proteins detectable in human milk cause infant cow's milk allergy symptoms.

Aims: In long QT syndrome (LQTS), primary prevention improves outcome; thus, early identification is key. The most common LQTS phenotype is a foetal heart rate (FHR) < 3rd percentile for gestational age (GA) but the effects of cohort, genotype, variant, and maternal β-blocker therapy on FHR are unknown. We assessed the influence of these factors on FHR in pregnancies with familial LQTS and developed a FHR/GA threshold for LQTS.

Maternal anxiety during pregnancy predicts infant attention to affective faces.

J Affect Disord

January 2024

Department of Psychology, University of Denver, Denver, CO, USA; Department of Pediatrics, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Prenatal maternal anxiety, particularly pregnancy-related anxiety, can negatively impact how infants focus on emotional faces, which is crucial for their social and emotional development.
  • A study involving 86 mothers showed that higher pregnancy-related anxiety predicted less attention from infants towards emotional faces compared to neutral ones.
  • Although the study found significant correlations, it can't establish a cause-and-effect relationship, highlighting the need for further research on the implications of maternal anxiety on child development.

A generalizable scaffold-based approach for structure determination of RNAs by cryo-EM.

Nucleic Acids Res

November 2023

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, Aurora, CO 80045, USA.

Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) can reveal the structures of large and often dynamic molecules, but smaller biomolecules (≤50 kDa) remain challenging targets due to their intrinsic low signal to noise ratio. Methods to help resolve small proteins have been applied but development of similar approaches to aid in structural determination of small, structured RNA elements have lagged. Here, we present a scaffold-based approach that we used to recover maps of sub-25 kDa RNA domains to 4.
