Background And Aim: Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) is a surgical technique widely used to correct deficiency of the transverse maxillary dimension. Although some studies investigated the effect of SARME on nasal and facial alterations, there is no evidence that correlates nasal septal deviation (NSD) to SARME as a possible postoperative sequel. The aim of this study is to address and quantify possible variations in the position of the nasal bony septum after SARME and identify any NSD as a postoperative outcome of this surgical technique.

Background: Leukotrienes (LTs) participate in the process of tissue damage in periodontal disease by leukocyte chemotaxis and osteoclastic activation. The activation of Cysteinyl-LT receptor is associated with increased expression of proinflammatory molecules and osteoclastogenesis. However, its implications on periodontal disease progression have not been studied.

In the present study we compared the effects of the selective COX-2 inhibitor etoricoxib with those of the classical non-selective NSAID diclofenac on the inflammatory process and alveolar bone loss in an experimental model of periodontitis in rats. Ninety male Holtzman rats (250 g) were randomly sorted into four experimental groups: Sham+CMC and Ligature+CMC (control) groups which received 0.5% carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) solution; Ligature+Diclofenac and Ligature+Etoricoxib groups which received Potassium Diclofenac and Etoricoxib, respectively, suspended in 0.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been widely used for different reparative procedures in endodontics. The extensive use of this cement for pulp capping, apexifications, apical surgeries, and revascularization is related to its ability to induce tissue repair and to stimulate mineralization. Several research studies have tested modifications in the composition of MTA-based cements in order to enhance their clinical performance.

Background/aim: Injuries to bone during trauma may require bone grafts and/or fixation to ensure optimal healing. Autologous bone grafts are still very common, but little data exist regarding the most effective means of fixation of such grafts. The aim of this study was to compare the fixation of autologous bone grafts with titanium screws and adhesives based on n-butyl-cyanoacrylate.

Aims: Calcineurin inhibitors are widely used for prevention of graft rejection and treatment of autoimmune disorders, which result in increased longevity and enhanced quality of life for patients. Unfortunately, the toxic side effects of these drugs (mainly renal, hepatic and cardiac) limit their use. In this work, we studied the effects of long-term treatment of rats with the immunosuppressant cyclosporin (CsA) or tacrolimus (Tac) on salivation, saliva composition and on the major salivary glands (parotid and submandibular) in terms of histological alterations and oxidative stress, evaluated as lipoperoxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive species--TBARS) and antioxidant enzyme activity contents (superoxide dismutase--SOD, catalase--CAT and glutathione peroxidase--GPx).

Methods: Twenty-nine patients with a total of 32 condylar fractures were evaluated. The patients were investigated prospectively based on the following variables: age, sex, aetiology, side, location and classification of the fracture, degree of displacement, associated fractures, surgical approach, oral health status, type of osteosynthesis plate, duration of surgery, mouth-opening, complications, and duration of follow-up.
