Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in the Nkalagu community of Ebonyi State to assess levels of natural radioactivity from potassium (K), thorium (Th), and radium (Ra) in limestone and surface soil samples using gamma spectroscopic analysis.
  • The average activity concentrations for Ra, Th, and K were higher in limestone than in soil, with most values exceeding global averages set by the United Nations.
  • The findings indicate significant radiation exposure risks, leading to a recommendation against using the limestone for construction, especially in residential buildings where people spend considerable time.

This study explored the dietary impacts of some plant leaves (Centrosema pubescence leaves, Moringa oleifera leaves and Ipomea batata leaves) on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of Archachatina marginata reared in confinement. A twelve (12) weeks feeding trial on nine hundred and sixty (960) African giant land snails (A. marginata) fed various leaves was evaluated.

Over the years, the release of potential radiological components around the oil exploration environment has increased with potential health implications.Yet; the mechanism and health associated assessment have remained fuzzy to most experimental scientists. The current study determines the activity concentration of radionuclides in sediments and the corresponding health risk assessments from the hydrocarbon exploration environment of the southern coastal area of Delta State, Nigeria.

Resistance/sensitivity to polymyxin-B (PB) antibiotic has been employed as one among other epidemiologically relevant biotyping-scheme for into Classical/El Tor biotypes. However, recent studies have revealed some pitfalls bordering on PB-sensitivity/resistance (PBR/S) necessitating study. Current study assesses the PBR/S cosmopolitan prevalence, epidemiology/distribution among O1/O139 and nonO1/nonO139 strains.

In this study the pattern of color of inheritance based on Mendel's laws on the Clarias gariepinus strain was evaluated, to ascertain the different traits of albino, normally pigmented, and a combination of both traits that could be passed across from the parent stocks to the progenies. Since albinism is caused by a series of genetic abnormalities resulting in the reduction of melanin production, partial diallel cross between normally pigmented and albino fish was carried out using two females (albino and normal pigmented brood fish) weighing 2.5 kg and 3 kg, respectively; they were used in crossing two males (albino and normal pigmented brood fish) that weighed 1.

Internal exposure of public to radiation arising from ingestion of natural radionuclides in tuber crops of Ebonyi State origin was investigated in this study. Committed effective doses and lifetime cancer risk of K, Ra, and Th in cassava, cocoyam, water yam, and white yam were calculated. The average activity concentrations of K, Ra, and Th determined by gamma spectrometric Na (TI) detector were, respectively, 199.

Soil-plant transfer factor (TF) is one of the vital variables employed in assessing plants uptake of radionuclides and their transfer to food chain for predictive ingestion dose and risk evaluation. To further this goal, the TF characteristics of natural K, Th and Ra were thus investigated in some crops (yam, cassava, rice, maize, groundnut, cowpea, okra, pumpkin leaf, banana and pawpaw) cultivated in southwestern part of Nigeria using HPGe gamma spectroscopy. The obtained results of activity concentration (AC) of the radionuclides across all the cultivated soil samples indicated average values that are less than the global average, whereas in the crops, average values of Ra and Th, were higher than reference values for different crops group.

Listeria outbreaks and food recalls is on the raise globally. Milk particularly is highly susceptible to Listeria as its production and storage adequately support Listeria growth. The extent of milk contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) and preventative actions to halt milk associated outbreaks in Africa are unknown.
