We present a new theory for partitioning simulations of periodic and solid-state systems into physically sound atomic contributions at the level of Kohn-Sham density functional theory. Our theory is based on spatially localized linear combinations of crystalline Gaussian-type orbitals and, as such, capable of exposing local features within periodic electronic structures in a more intuitive and robust manner than alternatives based on the spatial distribution of atomic basis functions alone. Early decomposed cohesive energies of both molecular polymers and different crystalline polymorphs demonstrate how the atomic properties yielded by our theory convincingly align with the expected charge polarization in these systems, also whenever partial charges and Madelung energies may lend themselves somewhat ambiguous to interpretation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to establish more evidence to provide the clinicians with a greater knowledge on the patient reported outcomes and quality of life (QoL) after laparoscopic appendectomy (LA).
Method: 105 patients who had undergone LA for acute appendicitis regardless of severity, were included prospectively at Odense University Hospital, Svendborg. The patient reported consequence of surgery were assessed through the validated electronic survey from European-QoL questionnaire (5Q-5D-5L) including a self-reported VAS-score (0-100).

Purpose: Although total dietary protein intake has been associated with bladder cancer (BC) risk, the effect of the origin (plant or animal) and the substitutions remain to be understood. This study aimed to investigate the effect of total dietary protein, animal-based protein, plant-based protein, and their substitutions with each other on the risk of BC using a pooled analysis of 10 cohort studies.
Methods: The study was conducted within the "BLadder cancer Epidemiology and Nutritional Determinants" (BLEND) study, including 10 prospective cohort studies from several European countries, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the correlation between short luteal phases and cycle irregularity in perimenopausal women.
Methods: In this feasibility pilot study, daily salivary-progesterone measurements from presumed perimenopausal women have been analyzed using the inne minilab-an at-home system for ovulation and cycle tracking. Data were collected between 2020 to August 2022 from 29 women from Germany and Austria from users over the age of 42 years.

We investigate the emergence of self-hybridized thermal magnetoplasmons in doped graphene nanodisks at finite temperatures upon being subjected to an external magnetic field. Using a semianalytical approach, which fully describes the eigenmodes and polarizability of the graphene nanodisks, we show that the hybridization originates from the coupling of transitions between thermally populated Landau levels and localized magnetoplasmon resonances of the nanodisks. Owing to their origin, these modes combine the extraordinary magneto-optical response of graphene with the strong field enhancement of plasmons, making them an ideal tool for achieving strong chiral light-matter interactions, with the additional advantage of being tunable through carrier concentration, magnetic field, and temperature.

Anterior shoulder instability with glenoid bone lesion can be treated with the Eden-Hybinette procedure utilizing a tricortical iliac crest bone graft or the Latarjet procedure. This study aimed to evaluate the glenohumeral joint (GHJ) kinematics throughout an external shoulder rotation following the Eden-Hybinette and Latarjet procedures. Nine human specimens were examined with dynamic radiostereometry during a GHJ external rotation with anteriorly directed loads from 0 to 30 N.

Background: Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis-related lung disease (sJIA-LD) is a severe complication in patients with treatment-refractory systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of allogeneic haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) in a cohort of children with sJIA-LD.
Methods: This international, retrospective cohort study was performed in nine hospitals across the USA and Europe in children with sJIA-LD who had received allogeneic HSCT.

Understanding the habitat use of individuals can facilitate methods to measure the degree to which populations will be affected by potential stressors. Such insights can be hard to garner for marine species that are inaccessible during phases of their annual cycles. Here, we quantify the link between foraging habitat and behaviour in an aquatic bird of high conservation concern, the red-throated diver () across three breeding populations (Finland, Iceland and Scotland) during their understudied moult period.

Tumor neovascularization mediated by endothelial cells (ECs) is essential for ovarian cancer (OC) progression, but interactions between epithelial cells and ECs are not well understood. Here, we analyze single-cell transcriptome of 87,847 epithelial cells and 11,696 ECs from fallopian tubes, primary and metastatic ovarian tumors. Cell differentiation trajectory analysis reveals that fallopian tube cells exhibit a potential development trend toward primary OC epithelial cells.

Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors block pathways involved in inflammation and immune response, making JAK inhibitors useful in the treatment of various diseases. While the efficacy of these drugs has been proven in several studies, their safety profile needs to be further investigated. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we examined the risk of infections during treatment with oral JAK inhibitors with no concomitant treatment compared to placebo in phase 2 and 3 randomized, placebo-controlled trials.

Introduction: The adverse health effects of sugar-sweetened beverage intake are well-established, but the implications of overall added sugar intake remain unclear. We investigated the associations between intake of added sugar and various sugar-sweetened foods and beverages and risk of 7 cardiovascular diseases in 69,705 participants aged 45-83 years (47.2% female) from the Swedish Mammography cohort and Cohort of Swedish men.

Knowledge of contaminant distribution and transport of contaminant plumes in groundwater is important for effective remediation. Tedious and expensive laboratory analyses could be supplemented with optical measurements such as fluorescence to offer a rapid alternative with the potential for on-site measurements. Here, we explore the applicability of fluorescence spectroscopy as an on-site alternative to identifying the extent of a groundwater contaminant plume in Grindsted, Denmark.

Background: Cardiac power (CP) integrates echocardiographic and clinical parameters of hemodynamics, yet its prognostic value within the general population remains unexplored. This study investigated the association between CP and incident heart failure (HF) and cardiovascular (CV) death in the general population.
Methods: In this prospective cohort study, we measured CP in a total of 4022 individuals from the general population without prior HF.

The presence of erythrocyte ghost cells (EG) in blood smears indicates intravascular haemolysis or in-vitro haemolysis. However, observer reliability in detection of EG has not been documented. Immediate blood smear preparation is advised but may not always be practical.

Premise: Tree structure and function are constrained by and acclimate to climatic conditions. Drought limits plant growth and carbon acquisition and can result in "legacy" effects that last beyond the period of water stress. Leaf and twig-level legacy effects of past water abundance, such as that experienced by trees that established under wetter conditions are unknown.

Background: Although hotly disputed, coercive measures are widely used in mental health services globally. In Denmark, to ensure the rights of patients, special psychiatric legislation that emphasizes the imperative to always use the least intrusive intervention has been implemented. This raises the question of which coercive measures are perceived as being less intrusive than others.

Background: Learner agency involves students actively engaging in their learning process and shaping their educational experiences through autonomy, self-regulation, and decision-making. In professional education, particularly within health professions, learner agency is critical for fostering adaptability and lifelong learning. This scoping review explores how learner agency, alongside concepts such as self-regulated learning and self-directed learning, is addressed in undergraduate dental education, aiming to understand its implications and strategies for enhancing student agency in this context.
