Centering relationships in collegiate leadership curricula.

The relational leadership model and the five practices of exemplary leadership are widely used models that both emphasize a relational approach to leadership and center the collegiate context as a transformative environment for practicing and developing leadership. This article highlights two different applications of these models and provides important considerations for designing relational leadership curricula and programs for college students.

Efficient 2D to 0D Energy Transfer in HgTe Nanoplatelet-Quantum Dot Heterostructures through High-Speed Exciton Diffusion.

Large area absorbers with localized defect emission are of interest for energy concentration via the antenna effect. Transfer between 2D and 0D quantum-confined structures is advantageous as it affords maximal lateral area antennas with continuously tunable emission. We report the quantum efficiency of energy transfer in in situ grown HgTe nanoplatelet (NPL)/quantum dot (QD) heterostructures to be near unity (>85%), while energy transfer in separately synthesized and well separated solutions of HgTe NPLs to QDs only reaches 47 ± 11% at considerably higher QD concentrations.

Background: Turning the Page on Breast Cancer (TPBC) uses a multilevel approach to reduce breast cancer (BC) mortality among Black women. TPBC intervenes by (1) improving health care facilities' ability to conduct effective BC screening, follow-up, and treatment; (2) involving community-based organizations; and (3) providing education and personal risk information through a culturally relevant website. Ohio has among the worst BC mortality rates in the United States for Black women.

Background/purpose: To assess usefulness of phacofragmentation probe in the removal of silicone oil (SO) adherent to intraocular lenses (IOLs) during a SO removal procedure.

Methods: A 20-gauge (G) phacofragmentation probe was used to emulsify and remove SO adherent to IOLs during 23-G vitrectomy for SO removal. The superotemporal 23-G cannula was removed, and 20-G sclerotomy was made by using a 20-G MVR blade.

Teaching students about the ethics of Human Subject Research (HSR) should be a fundamental component of students' education about research. In this article, we analyze the Institutional Review Board (IRB) websites of top-ranked Liberal Arts Colleges (LACs) to examine their framing of HSR carried out by undergraduate students. Our descriptive quantitative analysis from 50 top-ranked LACs in the United States indicates that a majority of IRB websites provide information about undergraduate research, and most include information about students' classroom-based research.

Rates of mental health symptoms, particularly anxiety and depression, have increased significantly in college students in the past decade along with utilization of mental health resources. The COVID-19 pandemic created an additional source of stressors to an already challenging landscape of college transition. COVID-19 has been associated with an increase of anxiety among college students, particularly first year students, entering college in Fall 2020.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mediating role of growth mindset of anxiety beliefs and avoidant coping behaviors in predicting changes in anxiety across the first year of college, drawing from a sample of first year students managing the transition to college under the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions (Fall 2020-Fall 2021).

Methods: Self-report online surveys (n=122) were administered to first year students at four timepoints: the beginning (August 2020; T1), and follow up surveys at two months (October 2020; T2), three months (November 2020; T3) and twelve months (August 2021; T4).

Results: Path analysis indicate that growth mindset of anxiety and avoidant coping partially mediate the relationship between baseline anxiety and later anxiety outcomes.

We present the first paleotopographic reconstruction of Taiwan by measuring the hydrogen isotope composition of leaf waxes (δH) preserved in 3-Ma and younger sediments of the southern Coastal Range. Plant leaf waxes record the δH of precipitation during formation, which is related to elevation. Leaf waxes produced across the orogen are transported and deposited in adjacent sedimentary basins, providing deep-time records of the source elevation of detrital organic matter.

Studies of the fossil record can inform our understanding of not only the causes of mass extinctions, but also their effects on biodiversity, ecology and evolution. Here, we examine regional-scale ecological changes resulting from a Late Devonian mass extinction event using brachiopod fossil assemblages from the Appalachian Basin. About half of the species went extinct, but were largely replaced by new immigrant taxa.

Background: While the majority of research on postpartum depressive and anxious symptoms has focused on mothers, a growing body of research suggests a need to understand the role of the partner's health and relationship quality as predictors of postpartum maternal depression, while also better understanding correlates of partner or paternal depression in the postpartum period. The purpose of the current study is to evaluate mother and partner stress, anxiety, mood, infant care support, and relationship quality as predictors of perinatal depressive and anxious symptoms in first time mothers and partners during the postpartum hospital stay.

Excitonic chromophore aggregates have wide-ranging applicability in fields such as imaging and energy harvesting; however their rational design requires adapting principles of self-assembly to the requirements of excited state coupling. Using the well-studied amphiphilic cyanine dye C8S3 as a template-known to assemble into tubular excitonic aggregates-we synthesize several redshifted variants and study their self-assembly and photophysics. The new pentamethine dyes retain their tubular self-assembly and demonstrate nearly identical bathochromic shifts and lineshapes well into near-infrared wavelengths.

Spectrally Selective Time-Resolved Emission through Fourier-Filtering (STEF).

We demonstrate a method for separating and resolving the dynamics of multiple emitters without the use of conventional filters. By directing the photon emission through a fixed path-length imbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we interferometrically cancel (or enhance) certain spectral signatures corresponding to one emissive species. Our approach, Spectrally selective Time-resolved Emission through Fourier-filtering (STEF), leverages the detection and subtraction of both outputs of a tuned Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which can be combined with time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) or confocal imaging to demix multiple emitter signatures.
