Within a given situation, an individual's goal motivates and structures how they interact with their surroundings. The goal also organizes the available information and specifies the role of a given item or attribute in terms of how it relates to the other aspects of the situation. We propose these ideas should inform the study of concept acquisition.

Article Synopsis
  • MicroRNAs, specifically miR-379-5p, have a crucial role in cancer by regulating gene expression, potentially suppressing or promoting tumor growth.
  • The study identifies the UBE2E3 gene as a target of miR-379-5p, whose expression is downregulated in various cancers, including breast and bladder cancer.
  • Experimental results confirmed that miR-379-5p directly suppresses UBE2E3 expression, leading to decreased cell viability and increased apoptotic rates, suggesting its significant role in cancer development.

Lithium isotope evidence for a plumeworld ocean in the aftermath of the Marinoan snowball Earth.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

November 2024

Department of Geosciences, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061.

Article Synopsis
  • The snowball Earth hypothesis suggests that during the Marinoan ice age around 635 million years ago, continental chemical weathering was greatly reduced but then increased afterward.
  • Research conducted on lithium isotope compositions in rock layers from South China shows a distinct trend of decreasing lithium levels as distance from the shore increases, indicating the mixing of meltwater and hypersaline seawater.
  • The findings support the idea that during this period, weak weathering on land and strong reverse weathering on the ocean floor influenced the chemistry of the oceans, aligning with the plumeworld hypothesis.

Aquatic ecosystems are often negatively affected by invasive species. However, biotic resistance by native species, either by competition or predation, can reduce the impacts of invasions by non-native species. The Western Mosquitofish () is one of the most impactful invasive species of freshwater fish and cause declines in native fish populations.

Article Synopsis
  • By 2050, bacterial infections are projected to result in 1.8 million more deaths annually compared to cancer, highlighting a severe antibiotic discovery crisis.
  • Gram-negative bacteria are particularly concerning due to their multi-drug resistance from their thick outer membrane.
  • This review explores a new strategy to combat bacterial pathogenicity by disrupting metal homeostasis, improving antibiotic effectiveness, and discusses the limited success of metallophores in clinical trials.

Profiles of community support and challenges associated with insomnia symptoms: Findings from the pilot Bhutanese Community of Central Ohio Health Study.

Sleep Health

December 2024

Epidemiology Branch, Division of Intramural Research, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how community support and challenges affect insomnia symptoms in Bhutanese immigrants in the U.S.
  • Researchers analyzed data from a sample of 495 Bhutanese individuals and identified four distinct profiles based on factors like neighborhood cohesion and social support.
  • The findings showed that higher community cohesion and support correlated with lower insomnia rates, emphasizing the importance of social connections for mental health in refugee populations.

Planetary health is an emerging field that emphasises that humans depend on a healthy Earth for survival and, conversely, that the sustainability of Earth systems is dependent on human behaviours. In response to member demands for resources to support teaching and learning related to planetary health, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) convened a working group to develop a set of planetary health learning objectives (PHLOs) that would complement the existing ten CUGH global health learning objectives. The eight PHLOs feature Earth system changes, planetary boundaries, and climate change science; ecological systems and One Health; human health outcomes; risk assessment, vulnerability, and resilience; policy, governance, and laws (including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement); roles and responsibilities of governments, businesses, civil society organisations, other institutions, communities, and individuals for mitigation, adaptation, conservation, restoration, and sustainability; environmental ethics, human rights, and climate justice; and environmental literacy and communication.

Although a large number of Muslim refugees have resettled in the United States for the last decades, few studies have looked into maternal healthcare access and utilization among Muslim refugee women in the country. This qualitative study was conducted to explore the factors influencing maternal healthcare access and utilization among Muslim refugee women resettled in the United States. In-depth interviews were conducted among Afghan, Iraqi, and Syrian refugee women (n = 17) using an interview guide informed by Social Cognitive Theory and its key constructs.

Base-modified adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) analogues are highly sought after as building blocks for mRNAs and non-coding RNAs, for genetic code expansion or as inhibitors. Current synthetic strategies lack efficient and robust 5'-triphosphorylation of adenosine derivatives or rely on costly phosphorylation reagents. Here, we combine the efficient organic synthesis of base-modified AMP analogues with enzymatic phosphorylation by a promiscuous polyphosphate kinase 2 class III from an unclassified bacterium (EbPPK2) to generate a panel of C2-, N-, or C8-modified ATP analogues.

The energetic disorder induced by fluctuating liquid environments acts in opposition to the precise control required for coherence-based sensing. Overcoming fluctuations requires a protected quantum subspace that only weakly interacts with the local environment. We report a ytterbium complex that exhibited an ultranarrow absorption linewidth in solution at room temperature with a full width at half maximum of 0.

Behaviour settings, situated action and complexity theory.

Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci

Psychology, Denison University, Granville, OH 43023, USA.

In spite of the fact that Roger Barker's groundbreaking research was acclaimed sixty years ago by his contemporaries, it has all been but forgotten among recent generations of psychologists. However, in the wake of developments in dynamical systems and complexity theory, its value for understanding psychological processes in everyday life should be recognized anew. Barker's naturalistic studies of children's daily behaviours in their community revealed that their actions which initially seemed only marginally predictable at the level of individual interaction were, in fact, reliably context-dependent.

Background: Breastfeeding self-efficacy has been identified as an important influence on breastfeeding outcomes. Among new parent couples, partners are uniquely positioned to be sources of support for developing breastfeeding self-efficacy, yet few breastfeeding programs have attempted to involve partners directly. The purpose of this study was to test the impact of a novel program, Happy, Healthy, Loved, on breastfeeding self-efficacy and maternal mood through emphasizing partner support and actively addressing postpartum-specific stress management in a tailored text message delivery program.

August 2024

Department of Global Health, Denison University, Granville, OH, USA. Department of Family Science, School of Public Health, University of Maryland, 2242 Valley Drive, College Park, MD 20742, United States.

This study examines the association between Afghan women's autonomy (WA) and experience of domestic violence (physical, sexual, and emotional) in the previous 12 months, and whether this association is moderated by education status. We used data from 19,098 married women aged 15-49, who completed the 2015 Afghanistan Demographic and Health Survey- the first and only national survey administered in the country. WA was measured across 5 domains (healthcare, visiting family, household purchases, spending, and contraceptive use).

  • Endoscopic vacuum-assisted therapy is a safer and easier way to treat holes in the esophagus compared to traditional surgery and other methods.
  • In a special case, doctors used an existing feeding tube to place a vacuum sponge more easily inside a 7-year-old boy's body to help heal his esophagus.
  • The boy healed well without further issues after a month, showing that this new method could make esophagus repairs simpler and less painful.

Rising temperatures are leading to increased prevalence of warm-affinity species in ecosystems, known as thermophilisation. However, factors influencing variation in thermophilisation rates among taxa and ecosystems, particularly freshwater communities with high diversity and high population decline, remain unclear. We analysed compositional change over time in 7123 freshwater and 6201 terrestrial, mostly temperate communities from multiple taxonomic groups.
