Evidence indicates that SARS-CoV-2 infection increases the likelihood of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Modifications in the circulatory, pulmonary, hormonal, and immunological pathways induced by pregnancy render pregnant women as a high-risk group. A growing body of research shows that SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy is connected to a number of maternal complications, including pneumonia and intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization.

October 2022

Unit of Reproductive Endocrinology, 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical School, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, GR-56429 Thessaloniki, Greece.

Regular physical activity during pregnancy has a positive effect on the mother and fetus. However, there is scarce data regarding the effect of exercise in pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The aim of the present parallel, non-randomized, open-label, pilot, clinical study was to examine the effect of two exercise programs on the resting metabolic rate (RMR) and substrate utilization in pregnancies complicated by GDM, compared with usual care (advice for the performance of exercise).

Article Synopsis
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) affects a significant percentage of females and is a major cause of infertility, with hormones like leptin, adiponectin, and kisspeptin playing potential roles in the condition.
  • Research indicates that most women with PCOS have higher levels of leptin and lower levels of adiponectin, although the exact impact of these hormones is not well understood; more longitudinal studies are needed for clarity.
  • Current studies provide inconclusive evidence on whether leptin, adiponectin, and kisspeptin can serve as reliable markers for diagnosing or understanding PCOS, highlighting the need for further research in this area.

Mechanical Methods for the Induction of Labour After Previous Caesarean Section - An Updated, Evidence-based Review.

Geburtshilfe Frauenheilkd

July 2022

Universitätsklinik für Gynäkologie, Geburtshilfe und Gynäkologische Endokrinologie, Kepler Universitätsklinikum, Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, Linz, Austria.

There are currently no up-to-date evidence-based recommendations on the preferred method to induce labour after previous Caesarean section, especially for patients with unripe cervix, as randomised controlled studies are lacking. Intravenous oxytocin and misoprostol are contraindicated in these women because of the high risk of uterine rupture. In women with ripe cervix (Bishop Score > 6), intravenous administration of oxytocin is an effective procedure with comparable rates of uterine rupture to those with spontaneous onset of labour.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease through the female lifespan: the role of sex hormones.

J Endocrinol Invest

September 2022

Menopause Unit, 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Aretaieio Hospital, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece.

The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) differs between various stages of the female lifespan. The aim of this review is to summarize current evidence on the association of NAFLD and circulating sex hormones and to explore the pathogenesis of NAFLD within the context of (1) sex hormone changes during the reproductive, post-reproductive female life and beyond and (2) the in vitro and in vivo evidence on pharmacological modulation in women on menopausal hormone treatment (MHT) or endocrine therapy after breast cancer. The fluctuation in estrogen concentrations, the relative androgen excess, and the age-related reduction in sex hormone-binding globulin are related to increased NAFLD risk.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are investigating circulating cell-free DNA (ccfDNA) as a potential non-invasive biomarker for the early diagnosis and monitoring of type 2 diabetes (T2DM).
  • In a study involving 96 T2DM patients and 71 healthy individuals, ccfDNA levels were quantified and analyzed, revealing significant differences in methylation patterns of certain β-cell-related genes between the two groups.
  • The findings suggest that ccfDNA could provide crucial clinical insights for T2DM management, with a predictive model showing strong performance in distinguishing between T2DM and healthy individuals.

Background: Epigenetic alterations in ctDNA are highly promising as a source of novel potential liquid biopsy biomarkers and comprise a very promising liquid biopsy approach in ovarian cancer, for early diagnosis, prognosis and response to treatment.

Methods: In the present study, we examined the methylation status of six gene promoters (, , , , and in high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). We evaluated the prognostic significance of DNA methylation of these six gene promoters in primary tumors (FFPEs) and plasma cfDNA samples from patients with early, advanced and metastatic HGSOC.
