Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, exert health benefits on the host by regulating intestinal and extraintestinal homeostasis. Common probiotic microorganisms include lactic acid bacteria (LAB), yeasts, and Bacillus species. Here, we present Probio-ichnos, the first manually curated, literature-based database that collects and comprehensively presents information on the microbial strains exhibiting in vitro probiotic characteristics (i.

Purpose: The main objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in the treatment of naïve ovarian cancer women undergoing complete or near-complete cytoreduction by assessing the overall survival, the disease-specific survival, and the disease-free survival. The secondary objective is the identification of prognostic indicators of survival and recurrence of these patients.
Patients-methods: Retrospective study of treatment in naïve women with locally advanced ovarian cancer treated with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and HIPEC and compared with those who were treated with cytoreduction alone.

This study aimed to monitor the oxygenation and blood supply in three quadriceps muscles [the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), and rectus femoris (RF)] during squatting exercise to exhaustion. Eighteen young resistance-trained males performed five sets of 15 back squats in a Smith machine, with two warm-up sets [at 14% and 45% of the 15-repetition maximum (15RM)] and three main sets at 100% of the 15RM. Three near-infrared spectroscopy devices were attached to the VL, VM, and RF to record the muscle oxygen saturation (SmO) and total hemoglobin (tHb, an index of muscle blood supply).

Radiotherapy (RT)-induced lymphopenia may hinder the anti-tumor immune response. Preoperative RT or chemo-RT (CRT) for locally advanced rectal cancer is a standard therapeutic approach, while immunotherapy has been approved for mismatch repair-deficient rectal tumors. We retrospectively analyzed 98 rectal adenocarcinoma patients undergoing neoadjuvant CRT with VMAT (groups A, B, C) or IMRT (group D) techniques, with four different RT schemes: group A (n = 24): 25 Gy/5 Gy/fraction plus a 0.

Background: Endotype classification becomes the cornerstone of understanding sepsis pathogenesis. Macrophage activation-like syndrome (MALS) and immunoparalysis are the best recognized major endotypes, so far. Interferon-gamma (IFNγ) action on tissue macrophages stimulates the release of the cytotoxic chemokine CXCL9.

Introduction: The Anaconda aortic stent graft is a trimodular endovascular stent graft with an active infrarenal fixation suitable for the treatment of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms with an infrarenal neck angulation ≤90°. A unique magnet-based mechanism facilitates the cannulation of the contralateral leg.
Areas Covered: The present article provides a complete description of the third-generation Anaconda endograft, the Anaconda One-Lok, its clinical performance and the related technical and mechanical characteristics as well as a brief comparison between itself and other similar endografts.

Aims: Hypervolemia remains a problem in hemodialysis patients and is associated with hypertension, cardiovascular events and mortality. Lung Ultrasound (LUS) is a technique that detects hypervolemia via 4 different protocols depending on the number of sites checked on the chest wall. It has not been established which protocol should be preferred in the literature.

The health and fitness (H&F) sector is rapidly evolving and appears to be a vibrant space for industry stakeholders with a great potential globally. This observational study aimed to identify the most popular trends related to H&F services in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the first time, focused on the industry status after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and aimed to detect potential differences with the recent results observed in other countries or regions. Additionally, a chi-square analysis was applied to determine the significant differences between trends and demographics, such as sex, age, experience, and work status.

The growing prevalence of overweight/obesity, the persistence of inadequate glycemic control among the majority of affected individuals, and the still unacceptably high risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among population with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), impose an urgent need for the introduction of non-insulin glucose-lowering agents in the therapeutic armamentarium. Given that their antihyperglycemic mechanism of action is independent of endogenous insulin secretion and that the observed cardio-renal benefits are unrelated to their glucose-lowering properties, one can speculate that the use of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) could provide benefits in T1D, similar to the ones observed among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and heart failure. Available evidence from randomized controlled trials suggests that treatment with SGLT2is as adjunct to insulin in T1D results in modest reductions in glycated hemoglobin and body weight.

Background/objectives: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have an established role in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) therapy. The loss of HLA-class-I expression allows cancer cell evasion from immune surveillance, disease progression, and failure of immunotherapy. The restoration of HLA-class-I expression may prove to be a game-changer in current immunotherapy strategies.

Apples are consumed lavishly worldwide, while demand is increasing for the management of the huge apple-waste amounts that lead to significant disposal costs and ecological issues. Additionally, apples represent fruits with several bioactive constituents, which are key factors in a healthy, balanced diet. In the present study, an extensive review is presented regarding the bioactive compounds of an apple processing by-product, namely apple pomace, mentioning their significance as viable ingredients/substances in foods and cosmetics aiming at chronic disease prevention and health promotion.

Diabetic bladder dysfunction (DBD) comprises a wide spectrum of lower urinary tract symptoms that impact diabetic patients' lives, including urinary frequency, urgency, incontinence, and incomplete bladder emptying. To relieve symptoms, anticholinergics have been widely prescribed and are considered an effective treatment. There is increasing evidence that diabetic patients may benefit from the use of phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.

Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) constitute a diverse superfamily of NAD(P)-dependent enzymes pivotal in oxidizing endogenous and exogenous aldehydes to carboxylic acids. Beyond metabolic roles, ALDHs participate in essential biological processes, including differentiation, embryogenesis and the DNA damage response, while also serving as markers for cancer stem cells (CSCs). Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1B1 (ALDH1B1) is a mitochondrial enzyme involved in the detoxification of lipid peroxidation by-products and metabolism of various aldehyde substrates.

Endoscopic examination of the upper and lower GI tract often fails to identify hemorrhagic lesions in anemic HD patients. The study aims to evaluate lesions of the small bowel mucosa in HD vs non-HD patients with suspected small-bowel bleeding (SSBB) using capsule endoscopy (CE) after negative upper and lower GI endoscopies.

MiRNAs have been identified as participants in leukemogenesis by controlling several cellular functions, such as differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Their role in myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) pathogenesis is researched due to implementations in early identification, classification, and therapeutical options. IPSS-R, being the most widely used MDS classification, underestimates early biological events that can alter the disease's prognosis.
