An Armored Heart: A Diagnosis Hidden in Plain Sight.

JACC Case Rep

August 2024

Department of Cardiology, University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, Medical School, Democritus University of Thrace, Alexandroupolis, Greece.

We report a case of an overtly symptomatic patient with delayed diagnosis of massive (>25-mm thickness), circular, constrictive pericarditis. Our patient underwent a successful surgical pericardiectomy-a high-risk procedure-revealing an armored heart, with an impressive clinical improvement. Diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis is challenging and requires high clinical suspicion.

Article Synopsis
  • A biophysical network model for the isolated striatal body is created to enhance deep brain stimulation (DBS) for conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • The model is based on advanced equations and uses neuron positioning data from a human atlas, allowing it to distinguish between healthy and pathological neuronal activity.
  • It identifies optimal DBS parameters by balancing stimulation frequency, amplitude, and localization while revealing a trade-off between network activity and frequency synchronization.

Exploration of spp. Genome in Search of Antibiotic Resistance.

Int J Mol Sci

July 2024

Department of Microbiology, Prof. Waclaw Dabrowski Institute of Agricultural and Food Biotechnology, State Research Institute, Rakowiecka 36 Street, 02-532 Warsaw, Poland.

The study investigates the antibiotic resistance (AR) profiles and genetic determinants in three strains of guaiacol-producing spp. isolated from orchard soil and pears. Their phenotypic characteristics, such as spore formation; resistance to different factors, including drugs or disinfectants; or production of off-flavor compounds, can affect the taste and aroma of spoiled products.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one the most common primary malignancies with high mortality and morbidity. The melanoma-associated antigen (MAGE) gene family includes several genes that are highly expressed in numerous human cancers, making many of them part of the cancer-testis antigen (CTA) family. MAGE-C1 is expressed in various malignancies but is absent in normal cells, except for the male germ line.

The Role of Erythropoietin in Bovine Sperm Physiology.

Animals (Basel)

July 2024

Laboratory of Animal Physiology, School of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124 Thessaloniki, Greece.

Erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone secreted mainly by the kidney, exerts its biological function by binding to its cell-surface receptor (EpoR). The presence of EPO and EpoR in the male and female reproductive system has been verified. Therefore, some of the key properties of EPO, such as its antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects, could improve the fertilizing capacity of spermatozoa.

Intratumoral Microbiome: Foe or Friend in Reshaping the Tumor Microenvironment Landscape?

Cells

July 2024

Laboratory of Experimental Oncology, Division of Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Crete, 71500 Heraklion, Greece.

The role of the microbiome in cancer and its crosstalk with the tumor microenvironment (TME) has been extensively studied and characterized. An emerging field in the cancer microbiome research is the concept of the intratumoral microbiome, which refers to the microbiome residing within the tumor. This microbiome primarily originates from the local microbiome of the tumor-bearing tissue or from translocating microbiome from distant sites, such as the gut.

Article Synopsis
  • Integrated pest management (IPM) is a sustainable approach to pest control, but adoption rates are low among citrus farmers in Iran; this study explores the factors influencing this behavior using protection motivation theory (PMT).
  • Farmers showed limited usage of IPM practices, primarily focusing on monitoring, with perceived severity of chemical controls and efficacy of IPM positively influencing their adoption, while costs and barriers hindered it.
  • The PMT model provides insightful understanding of IPM practice adoption, highlighting that the perceived risks of chemical usage strongly motivate adoption, while perceived costs significantly deter it.

Sarcoid-like reactions (SLR) in patients with malignancies are a relatively common finding. Defined by the presence of non-caseating granulomas, SLR does not meet the clinical criteria for classic sarcoidosis. In cancer patients, SLR often presents a challenging differential diagnosis, as it must be distinguished from disease progression due to malignancy.

In this study, the adsorption of a mixture of high-consumed drugs onto virgin and aged PET microplastics has been studied for the time ever. The target mixture comprised two anti-inflammatory drugs, diclofenac and ketoprofen, one anti-hypertensive, valsartan, and four common antibiotics, indomethacin, trimethoprim, isoniazid, and metronidazole. Two types of PET MPs (virgin and UV-aged) were used in the experimental procedure.

Article Synopsis
  • * Long-term biogas monitoring revealed a biogas recovery efficiency of about 40% over the last decade, which was lower than anticipated, prompting a need for better attributes in waste management practices.
  • * The implementation of the USEPA LandGEM model indicated that the introduction of MBT significantly decreased biogas generation by up to 90%, and studies on fugitive emissions suggested frequent monitoring and remedial actions to improve biogas recovery rates, especially in emissions
