Purpose: To evaluate the neuroprotective effects of Rilmenidine on diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in a rat model of diabetes induced by streptozotocin (STZ).

Methods: STZ (60 mg/kg) was administered to adult Sprague-Dawley rats to induce diabetes. On the 30th day after STZ administration, electromyography (EMG) and motor function tests confirmed the presence of DPN.

Radiation therapy (RT) is typically applied using one of two standard approaches for preoperative treatment of resectable locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC): short-course RT (SC-RT) alone or long-course RT (LC-RT) with concurrent fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy. The Phase II single-arm KROG 11-02 study using intermediate-course (IC) (33 Gy (Gray)/10 fr (fraction) with concurrent capecitabine) preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) demonstrated a pathologically complete response rate and a sphincter-sparing rate that were close to those of LC-CRT. The current trial aim to compare the pathological/oncological outcomes, toxicity, and quality of life results of LC-CRT and IC-CRT in cases of LARC.

Chronic Kidney Disease Management in the Middle East and Africa: Concerns, Challenges, and Novel Approaches.

Int J Nephrol Renovasc Dis

April 2023

Department of Nephrology, Moroccan Society of Nephrology, Casablanca, Morocco.

The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and other comorbidities, such as hypertension and diabetes, which increase the risk of developing CKD, is on the rise in the Middle East and Africa. The Middle East and Africa CKD (MEA-CKD) steering committee, comprising eminent healthcare specialists from the Middle East and Africa, was formed to identify and propose steps to address the gaps in the management of CKD in these regions. The current article lists the MEA-CKD steering committee meeting outcomes and evaluates the available evidence supporting the role of novel therapeutic options for patients with CKD.

Objective: Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disease in which impaired social behaviors, impaired sociality, and restricted and repetitive behaviors are seen. Bumetanide is a loop diuretic that inhibits Na-K-2Cl cotransporter 1 and it is currently used in clinical phase studies in patients with autism spectrum disorder. In present research, it is purposed to demonstrate the beneficial effects of torasemide which is another Na-K-2Cl cotransporter 1 inhibitor on an experimental autism model induced with propionic acid by providing imaging and brain tissue investigations.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The literature is conflicting as to whether the high hip center (HHC) reconstruction in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an ideal option for patients with severe developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). This study aimed to compare the mid-term functional and radiographic outcomes of THA using HHC versus anatomical hip center (AHC) technique in Crowe types II and III DDH. Our hypothesis was that there may be no differences in terms of functional and radiographic outcomes between patients who underwent THA using HHC or AHC.

Background: There is limited information about the prevalence and risk factors of inguinal hernia and undescended testis in patients with spina bifida (SB). The aim of this study was to identify the properties and prevalence of inguinoscrotal diseases in these patients.

Methods: A questionnaire was completed by parents of patients with the diagnosis of SB in our center.

Purpose: Liver damage caused by drugs and other chemicals accounts for about 5% of all cases. Methotrexate (MTX), a folic acid analogue, is a first-line synthetic antimetabolite agent routinely used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has antioxidant activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of givinostat in treating ulcerative colitis in a rat model induced by acetic acid.
  • Thirty male rats were divided into three groups: one group received saline, and the other received givinostat, allowing for comparison of treatment effects on colitis.
  • Results indicated that givinostat significantly reduced inflammatory markers and improved histopathological outcomes compared to the saline group, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic option for colitis.

Tumor angiogenesis is known to support the spread and invasion of tumor cells, allow distant organ metastasis and to result in poorer prognoses and increased mortality. Since vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) is the major regulator of angiogenesis, in the present study the associations of the +405G>C and -460C>T polymorphisms with risk, primary tumor location, prognosis and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC) were investigated in Turkish subjects. A total of 153 subjects consist of 74 controls and 79 CRC diagnosed patients were included in the study.

Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed types of cancer worldwide. An early diagnosis and detection of colon cancer and polyp can reduce mortality and morbidity from colorectal cancer. Even though there are a variety of options in screen- ing tests, the question remains on which test is the most effective for the early detection of colorectal cancer.

Background: Programmed Cell Death-1 (PD-1) together with Programmed Death Ligand 1 (PDL-1) have crucial roles in anti-tumor immune response, cancer susceptibility and prognosis. Since PD-1 and PDL-1 have been considered as important genetic risk factors in cancer development and their functions can be affected by polymorphic sites, we investigated the effects of PD-1 rs2227981, rs2227982, rs36084323 and PDL-1 rs2282055, rs822336 gene polymorphisms on colorectal cancer (CRC) risk and prognosis in Turkish subjects.

Methods And Results: Our study group consisted of 5-FU or Capacitabine prescribed CRC diagnosed patients and healthy controls.

Objective: Basal ganglia structures play an important role in the pathophysiology of absence epilepsy, known as remote control of absence seizures. We examined the role of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway in absence epilepsy through behavioral and electroencephalography (EEG) parameters, immunohistochemical, and biochemical characteristics of dopamine and serotonin in the genetic absence epilepsy rat model.

Methods: The nigrostriatal pathway was degenerated by the injection of chemical 6-hydroxydopamine hydrobromide (6-OHDA) into the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) in Wistar and genetic absence epilepsy rats from Strasbourg (GAERS).

We aimed to reveal the anti-convulsant effects sulfasalazine and its mechanism in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures in rats. Forty-eight male Wistar albino rats (200-250 g) were randomly divided into two groups: 24 for electroencephalography (EEG) recording (group A) and 24 for behavioral studies (group B). About 70 mg/kg PTZ was used for behavioral studies after sulfasalazine administration and 35 mg/kg PTZ was used for EEG recording after sulfasalazine administration.

Objective: The post-operative serum level of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) has been found to be associated with post-operative cardiovascular complications and mortality in high-risk surgeries. The usefulness of the post-operative NT-proBNP level as a predictor of mortality after liver transplantation (LT) is unknown.

Methods: The records of patients at a single, tertiary university hospital who had undergone adult living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) with data of post-operative NT-proBNP level values were retrospectively analyzed for in-hospital mortality.
