Background: Imported malaria continues to be reported in Sri Lanka after it was eliminated in 2012, and a few progress to life-threatening severe malaria.

Methods: Data on imported malaria cases reported in Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2023 were extracted from the national malaria database maintained by the Anti Malaria Campaign (AMC) of Sri Lanka. Case data of severe malaria as defined by the World Health Organization were analysed with regard to patients' general characteristics and their health-seeking behaviour, and the latter compared with that of uncomplicated malaria patients.

In this review, the classification of magnetic materials exhibiting magnetoresistive properties is the focus of discussion because each material possesses different magnetic and electrical properties that influence the resulting magnetoresistance (MR) values. These properties depend on the structure and mechanism of the material. In this overview, the classification of magnetic materials with different structures is examined in several material groups, including the following: (1) perovskite structure (ABO), (2) alloy, (3) spinel structure, and (4) Kagome magnet.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how to best measure the general factor of psychopathology using various statistical models on data from youth ratings in 24 societies.
  • Four models were tested: principal axis, hierarchical factor, bifactor, and a simple Total Problem score, analyzing data from over 25,000 youth ages 11-18.
  • Findings show that all models yielded similar results, suggesting that the simplest approach (the Total Problem score) is recommended for evaluating youth psychopathology in both clinical and research settings.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common brain disease associated with cognitive impairment and dementia. donepezil, an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor drug as a commercial AD drug represents a non-cost-effective treatment with the toxic effects reported. As the prevalence of AD increases, the development of effective therapeutic treatments is urgently required.

Current therapies for autoimmune diseases are immunosuppressant agents, which have many debilitating side effects. However, dendritic cells (DCs) can induce antigen-specific tolerance. Tolerance restoration mediated by ex vivo-generated DCs can be a therapeutic approach.

A Conceptual Model of Individual Clinical Readiness.

Mil Med

November 2024

National War College, National Defense University, Washington, DC 20319, USA.

Introduction: Force readiness is a priority among senior leaders across all branches of the Department of Defense. Units that do not achieve readiness benchmarks are considered non-deployable until the unit achieves the requisite benchmarks. Because military units are made up of individuals, the unit cannot be ready if the individuals within the unit are not ready.

Objective: Despite the growing acceptance of neuronavigation in the field of neurosurgery, there is limited comparative research with contradictory results. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness (tumor resection rate and survival) and safety (frequency of neurological complications) of surgery for brain gliomas with or without neuronavigation.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated data obtained from electronic records of patients who underwent surgery for gliomas at Dr.

Excessive occupational exposure to noise results in a well-recognized occupational hearing loss which is prevalent in many workplaces and now it is taken as a global problem. Therefore, this study aims to assess the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss and associated factors among workers in the Bishoftu Central Air Base in Ethiopia. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 260 central air base workers through face-to-face interviews, an environment noise survey, and an audiometric test for data collection.

5-Fluorouracil is an antimetabolite drug indicated for cancer treatment. Therapeutic drug monitoring of 5-Fluorouracil is necessary because 5-Fluorouracil has narrow therapeutic window and its concentration in blood is affected by individual conditions, like gene polymorphisms. Dried Blood Spot (DBS) is one of the biosampling methods used for therapeutic drug monitoring.

Background/objective: Limited evidence exists regarding the socioeconomic inequalities in cerebrovascular disease (CBD) mortality at different urbanization levels. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the socioeconomic inequalities and urbanization levels in township-based CBD mortality in Taiwan.

Methods: Socioeconomic variables, including the percentages of low-income households, individuals with a university education and above, and tax payments, were measured at the township level from 2011 to 2020.

Thermal simulations have become increasingly popular in assessing energy efficiency and predicting thermal behaviors in various structures. Calibration of these simulations is essential for accurate predictions. A crucial aspect of this calibration involves investigating the influence of meteorological variables.

Background: Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic used to control onchocerciasis from nematode parasites. As an anthelmintic, ivermectin is designed to have high levels in the gastrointestinal tract, so that the systemic intake is relatively low. Due to the very small concentration of ivermectin, a selective and sensitive approach is needed for the analysis of ivermectin in blood.

Article Synopsis
  • Indonesia and French Guiana face similar challenges in emergency medical care access, particularly in the prehospital phase.
  • Unlike in France, where emergency medicine is a fully developed specialty, Indonesia is still developing this field.
  • A partnership was initiated between Jakarta University and French Guiana University, leading to the launch of a joint program in emergency medicine that started in August 2022, graduating its first class of 50 Indonesian doctors in August 2023.

Symbiodiniaceae species is a dinoflagellate that plays a crucial role in maintaining the symbiotic mutualism of reef-building corals in the ocean. Reef-building corals, as hosts, provide the nutrition and habitat to endosymbiotic Symbiodiniaceae species and Symbiodiniaceae species transfer the fixed carbon to the corals for growth. Environmental stress is one of the factors impacting the physiology and metabolism of the corals-dinoflagellate association.

Theoretical investigation on action mechanism and mollifying efficacy of propellant stabilizers.

J Mol Model

April 2024

Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Chung Cheng Institute of Technology, National Defense University, Taiwan, Republic of China.

Context: This project performed quantum chemical computation, through kinetic and thermodynamic analyses to compare relative reactivity, reaction rate, and equilibrium composition from the possible pathways in connection with stabilizer-nitrodioxide reactions to determine the stability of the materials for practical application. Corresponding achievements have promoted the use of N-methyl-p-nitroaniline (MNA) and dinitrophenyl malonamide series (M3, M4, and M5) stabilizers as high priorities for selection.

Methods: The Gaussian 09 program (G09) (Frisch et al 2009) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) function were performed to obtain related geometric and thermodynamic energy data for the molecular systems in this study.

Bilateral Pleural Effusion in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Managed by Vats Pleurodesis.

Eur J Case Rep Intern Med

March 2024

Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, Gatot Soebroto Central Army Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Unlabelled: Pleuroperitoneal leak as a cause of pleural effusions in peritoneal dialysis is a rare but important complication to consider in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients presenting with recurrent progressive dyspnoea. Generally, these effusions are unilateral and right-sided, resulting in shortness of breath and reduced ultrafiltration volume, which are initially managed by peritoneal rest. We describe a case of bilateral pleural effusions in a 57-year-old female on chronic CAPD who developed recurrent progressive dyspnoea but maintained adequate dialysis output.

Charge density waves (CDWs) involved with electronic and phononic subsystems simultaneously are a common quantum state in solid-state physics, especially in low-dimensional materials. However, CDW phase dynamics in various dimensions are yet to be studied, and their phase transition mechanism is currently moot. Here we show that using the distinct temperature evolution of orientation-dependent ultrafast electron and phonon dynamics, different dimensional CDW phases are verified in CuTe.
