Can juvenile supply predict future abundance of large-bodied reef fishes?

The extent to which juvenile abundance can predict future populations of lethrinids at Ningaloo Reef was assessed using size frequency data collected over 13 consecutive years. Annual abundance of juvenile lethrinids (<5 cm TL) was highest in northern Ningaloo during La Niña years, when seawater is warmer and oceanic currents stronger. Juvenile lethrinid abundance explained 35% of the variance in 1-2 year-old Lethrinus nebulosus abundance the following year, a steeper relationship in the north suggesting greater survival of juveniles.

Ribociclib may potentiate rosuvastatin effect in causing late onset rhabdomyolysis.

A woman in her 50s with metastatic hormone receptor positive breast cancer developed rhabdomyolysis and subsequent acute kidney injury while on a combination of ribociclib and rosuvastatin therapy. She had been taking both medications long term and had recently recommenced her ribociclib at her usual dose after a routine 1 week break. Cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors have been implicated in causing rhabdomyolysis by potentiating statin effect by way of inhibition of cytochrome P450 enzymatic action and decreasing hepatic membrane transporter function.

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is a globally important species for its value in fisheries and aquaculture, and as a research model. In order to characterise aspects of sex differentiation at the morphological and mRNA level in this species, the present study examined developmental changes in gonad morphology and gene expression in males and females between 0 and 79 days post hatch (dph). Morphological differentiation of the ovary (indicated by the formation of germ cell cysts) became apparent from 52 dph.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) affects males born with an additional X chromosome giving the genotype 47XXY classically. This syndrome has primary features of infertility and hypogonadism along with other features including a genetically hypercoagulable state. When associated with other risk factors, KS further increases the risk of venous thromboembolism and could result in life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE).

Discordance for genotypic sex in phenotypic female Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is related to a reduced sdY copy number.

The master sex determinant in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), sexually dimorphic on the Y chromosome (sdY), is strongly but not perfectly associated with male phenotype in several other species from the family Salmonidae. Currently, the cause and implications of discordance for sdY-predicted genotypic sex and phenotypic sex in these species is unclear. Using an established multiplex PCR test for exons 2 and 3 of sdY, we demonstrated that sdY-predicted genotypic sex was discordant with histologically evidenced phenotypic sex in 4% of 176 Tasmanian Atlantic salmon.
