Using off-the-shelf components such as reproducible acrylic and 3D-printed plates, and a webcam for eye tracking, serves as an inexpensive, open-source, and customizable solution in assistive robotics. DNA-protein quasi-mapping for rapid differential gene expression analysis in non-model organisms.

Background: Conventional differential gene expression analysis pipelines for non-model organisms require computationally expensive transcriptome assembly. We recently proposed an alternative strategy of directly aligning RNA-seq reads to a protein database, and demonstrated drastic improvements in speed, memory usage, and accuracy in identifying differentially expressed genes.

Result: Here we report a further speed-up by replacing DNA-protein alignment by quasi-mapping, making our pipeline > 1000× faster than assembly-based approach, and still more accurate.

Plastic pollution has become a global challenge, affecting water quality and health. Plastics including polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), are significant contributors to environmental pollution. With the growing need for investigation and detection of plastics found in natural waters, we propose the use of a portable laser diode (LD)-based fluorescence lidar system for in-situ detection of plastic litters in surface waters based on excitation-emission fluorescence spectroscopic data.

This study leverages an intersectional lens to characterize the therapeutic itineraries of local transgender (trans) communities vis-à-vis salient cisnormative and capitalist structures in Philippine society that produce trans health inequities. Interpretative phenomenological analysis of online interviews with thirteen (13) self-identified trans Filipinos reveals how the inaccessibility of trans-responsive care in the Philippines fosters trans health dilemmas, or the dilemmatic decision-making circumstances and processes that force trans Filipinos to choose between their trans-specific health needs and other needs. Such dilemmas valorize the deprioritization of trans health, disengagement with the health system, and the pursuit of alternative pathways to care oftentimes at the expense of their overall well-being.

Issues that arose from the Dengvaxia vaccination program in the Philippines in 2017 were followed by a remarkable decline in immunization coverage in the country. This study intended to describe the Filipinos' perceptions about vaccination after hearing about the Dengvaxia vaccine and the vaccination program and determine its potential relationship with selected demographic factors and other variables such as: health literacy, sources of information on Dengvaxia, information heard about the vaccine, healthcare visits, and perceived health status. The study utilized secondary data derived from a national health literacy survey in the Philippines.

Stringent lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic and the cisnormative framing of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in the Philippines cultivated precarious access to SRH systems among transgender (trans) communities during the public health crisis. With the shift toward digital health initiatives, this study aimed to explore the experiences of the local trans community in using digital health initiatives (DHIs) to access SRH care and gender-affirming services, information, and providers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online interviews with 13 self-identified trans Filipinos living in the Philippines during the pandemic were conducted and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Inflammation linked to various diseases is the biological response to certain stimuli. The pro-inflammatory potential of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) as potential inducers of inflammation bound to the Toll-like Receptor 4 (TLR4) and the anti-inflammatory capacity of (AP) phytocompounds as prospective inhibitors of the Nuclear Factor Kappa B (NF-κB) p50 transcription factor are investigated via in silico techniques. The molecular docking of the PAHs and AP phytocompounds is performed in AutoDock Vina by calculating their binding energies.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are widespread across the globe, existing in the environment in complex mixtures potentially capable of initiating respiratory illnesses. Here, we use an in silico approach to evaluate the potential pro-inflammatory effects of various carcinogenic PAHs and VOCs through their binding affinity towards the human toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). Chlorophyll-a measurement is important in algal growth and water quality monitoring in natural waters. A portable pulsed LED fluorescence lidar system based on the preliminary algal organic matter and pigments excitation-emission matrix (EEM) of commercialized AZTEC Spirulina powder at varying concentrations was developed. Fluorescence peaks from EEMs showed increasing intensity as the Spirulina concentration increases.

An updated checklist of the mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of Algeria based on records published from 1903 to 2021 is presented. Fifty-three species belonging to seven genera are known with reasonable confidence to occur in the country, including Aedes (15 species), Anopheles (15), Coquillettidia (2), Culex (14), Culiseta (5), Orthopodomyia (1) and Uranotaenia (1). Two additional species, Culex simpsoni Theobald, 1905 and Uranotaenia balfouri Theobald, 1904, are provisionally regarded as present in Algeria.

Growing efforts have been made to pool coronavirus data and control measures from countries and regions to compare the effectiveness of government policies. We examine whether these strategies can explain East Asia's effective control of the COVID-19 pandemic based on time-series data with cross-correlations between the Stringency Index and number of confirmed cases during the early period of outbreaks. We suggest that multidisciplinary empirical research in healthcare and social sciences, personality, and social psychology is needed for a clear understanding of how cultural values, social norms, and individual predispositions interact with policy to affect life-saving behavioural changes in different societies.

Evolutionary origins of taro () in Southeast Asia.

As an ancient clonal root and leaf crop, taro (, Araceae) is highly polymorphic with uncertain genetic and geographic origins. We explored chloroplast DNA diversity in cultivated and wild taros, and closely related wild taxa, and found cultivated taro to be polyphyletic, with tropical and temperate clades that appear to originate in Southeast Asia sensu lato. A third clade was found exclusively in wild populations from Southeast Asia to Australia and Papua New Guinea.
