The alewife ( is an anadromous herring that inhabits waters of northeastern North America. This prey species is a critical forage for piscivorous birds, mammals, and fishes in estuarine and oceanic ecosystems. During a discovery project tailored to identify potentially emerging pathogens of this species, we obtained the full genome of a novel hepadnavirus (ApHBV) from clinically normal alewives collected from the Maurice River, Great Egg Harbor River, and Delaware River in New Jersey, USA during 2015-2018.

Peril in the Pipeline: Unraveling the threads of PFAS contamination in U.S. drinking water systems.

We examined the spatial distribution of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in the US drinking water and explored the relationship between PFAS contamination, public water systems (PWS) characteristics, and socioeconomic attributes of the affected communities. Using data from the EPA's third Unregulated Contaminant Rule, the Census Bureau, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we identified spatial contamination hot spots and found that PFAS contamination was correlated with PWSs size, non-surface raw water intake sources, population, and housing density. We also found that non-white communities had less PFAS in drinking water.

For forty generations, two lines of White Leghorn chickens have been selected for high (HAS) or low (LAS) antibody response to a low dose injection of sheep red blood cells (SRBCs). Their gut is home to billons of microorganisms and the largest number of immune cells in the body; therefore, the objective of this experiment was to gain understanding of the ways the microbiome may influence the differential antibody response observed in these lines. We achieved this by characterizing the small intestinal microbiome of HAS and LAS chickens, determining their functional microbiome profiles, and by using machine learning to identify microbes which best differentiate HAS from LAS and associating the abundance of those microbes with host gene expression.

Since the 1970s, 2 lines of White Leghorn chickens, HAS and LAS, have been continuously divergently selected for 5-day postinjection antibody titer to injection with sheep red blood cells (SRBC). Antibody response is a complex genetic trait and characterizing differences in gene expression could facilitate better understanding of physiological changes due to selection and antigen exposure. At 41 d of age, randomly selected HAS and LAS chickens, which had been coraised from hatch, were either injected with SRBC (HASI and LASI) or kept as the noninjected cohort (HASN and LASN).

Black root rot complex and crown rot of strawberry caused by soilborne fungi limit sustainable strawberry production in the northeastern United States, especially in perennial systems, including matted row and plasticulture. As pathogen populations build up over time in the rhizosphere and infect the root system, feeder roots are pruned, which diminishes nutrient and water uptake and causes stunted plant growth or death. Alternative management options are needed for many organic and small growers who can't use chemical fumigants due to new regulations and potential health hazards.

It is the position of the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior that to improve the health of individuals, communities, and food systems, it is essential that nutrition educators meet each of 6 content competencies (basic food and nutrition knowledge, nutrition across the life cycle, food science, physical activity, food and nutrition policy, and agricultural production and food systems) and 4 process competencies (behavior and education theory; nutrition education program design, implementation and evaluation; written, oral, and social media communication; and nutrition education research methods). These competencies reflect the breadth of the nutrition education field and are grounded in peer-reviewed research. The rationale and evidence base for these competencies are presented.

The ameliorating effect and antidiabetic properties of diets augmented with boiled unripe plantain (20%-40%) in high fat fed/low dose of streptozotocin induced diabetic rats in comparison with the administration of acarbose were evaluated in this study using standard methods. High fat fed/low dose of streptozotocin (25 mg/kg body weight) was given to twenty-five male Wistar rats to induce diabetes leaving out 5 normal rats to serve as control. The animals were separated into five with six rats in each group and the experiment continued for 14 days.
