Celecoxib in breast cancer prevention and therapy.

Cancer Manag Res

October 2018

Division of Cancer Research and Training, Department of Internal Medicine, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Los Angeles,CA, USA,

Breast cancer has a high incidence worldwide. The results of substantial studis reveal that inflammation plays an important role in the initiation, development, and aggressiveness of many malignancies. The use of celecoxib, a novel NSAID, is repetitively associated with the reduced risk of the occurrence and progression of a number of types of cancer, particularly breast cancer.

Purpose: The impact of androgen receptor (AR) activity in breast cancer biology is unclear. We characterized and tested a novel therapy to an AR-governed target in breast cancer. We evaluated the expression of prototypical AR gene products human kallikrein 2 (hK2) and PSA in breast cancer models.

Background: The impact of facial aesthetic treatments not only enhances physical appearance but also psychological well-being. Accordingly, patient-reported outcomes are increasingly utilized as an important measure of treatment success. Observer-reported outcomes are a relevant yet often overlooked measure of treatment benefit.

Background: Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection (cCMV) is an important cause of hearing loss and cognitive impairment. Prior studies suggest that HIV-exposed children are at higher risk of acquiring cCMV. We assessed the presence, magnitude and risk factors associated with cCMV among infants born to HIV-infected women, who were not receiving antiretrovirals during pregnancy.

Background: Child malnutrition, in all its forms, is a public health priority in Zambia. After implementations based on a previous evaluation in 2012⁻14 were made, the efficacy of the Rainbow Project Supplementary Feeding Programs (SFPs) for the integrated management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM), moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), and underweight was reassessed in 2015⁻17.

Methods: The outcomes were compared with International Standards and with those of 2012⁻14.

Gluteal Ligamentous Anatomy and Its Implication in Safe Buttock Augmentation.

Plast Reconstr Surg

August 2018

From the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine; Ghavami Plastic Surgery; and the Department of Plastic Surgery, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Background: The number of buttock augmentations with fat transfer is steadily increasing, but a number of fatalities caused as a direct result of gluteal fat grafting have been reported. The technical details relating to cannula size, injection angle or trajectory, and plane of injection are critical for avoiding morbidity and mortality. However, the ligamentous anatomy has not been thoroughly explored, particularly how the ligaments are encountered in the clinical setting of fat transfer by means of cannulas.

Probiotics in Gastroenterology: How Pro Is the Evidence in Adults?

Am J Gastroenterol

August 2018

Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, Sylmar, CA, USA. Emeritus Professor of Clinical Medicine, David Geffen-UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Probiotic usage has become popular with both medical practitioners and the community in general; patients commonly seek advice regarding what, if any, such preparation would be useful for their own diseases. Since such advice should be evidence-based, identified randomized clinical trials (RCTs) for a number of gastrointestinal conditions were reviewed; the data were organized by individual probiotic genera/species. Only trials in adults were considered.

Targeting of PP2Cδ By a Small Molecule C23 Inhibits High Glucose-Induced Breast Cancer Progression .

Antioxid Redox Signal

June 2019

1 Division of Cancer Research and Training, Department of Internal Medicine, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Los Angeles, California.

Epidemiologic evidence indicates that diabetes may increase risk of breast cancer (BC) and mortality in patients with cancer. The pathophysiological relationships between diabetes and cancer are not fully understood, and personalized treatments for diabetes-associated BC are urgently needed. We observed that high glucose (HG), activation of nuclear phosphatase PP2Cδ, suppresses p53 function, and consequently promotes BC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.

Background: HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants are a growing population with potentially poor health outcomes. We evaluated morbidity and mortality in HEU formula-fed infants enrolled in the NICHD HPTN 040/PACTG 1043 trial.

Methods: Infectious morbidity, mortality and undernutrition were evaluated within a cohort of 1000 HEU infants enrolled between April 2004 and April 2010 in Brazil (n = 766) and South Africa (n = 234) as part of the NICHD/HPTN 040 trial of 3 different antiretroviral regimens to decrease intrapartum HIV vertical transmission.

MicroRNA-19a/b-3p protect the heart from hypertension-induced pathological cardiac hypertrophy through PDE5A.

J Hypertens

September 2018

The Affiliated Lianyungang Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University, The First People's Hospital of Lianyungang, Lianyungang, Jiangsu, PR China.

Aim: PDE5A is a leading factor contributing to cGMP signaling and cardiac hypertrophy. However, microRNA-mediated posttranscriptional regulation of PDE5A has not been reported. The aim of this study is to screen the microRNAs that are able to regulate PDE5A and explore the function of the microRNAs in cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling.

Background: Karyotype determination has a central role in the genetic workup of pregnancy loss, as aneuploidy (trisomy and monosomy) and polyploidy (triploidy and tetraploidy) are the cause in at least 50% of first trimester, 25% of second trimester, and 11% of third trimester miscarriages. There are several limitations with the current approaches of obtaining a karyotype using traditional cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization with a limited number of probes, and chromosomal microarray. These include culture failure, incomplete results, lower sensitivity, and longer reporting time.

Background: VYC-15L (Juvéderm Volbella XC) is a nonanimal crosslinked hyaluronic acid (HA) gel with lidocaine.

Objectives: To evaluate safety and effectiveness of repeat treatment with VYC-15L administered 1 year after treatment for lip and perioral enhancement.

Methods: In this prospective multicenter study, 124 subjects with minimal, mild, or moderate lip fullness on the validated 5-point Allergan Lip Fullness Scale (LFS) who received initial/touch-up treatment with VYC-15L received repeat treatment with VYC-15L 1 year after initial treatment.
