Fruit quality traits play a significant role in consumer preferences and consumption in blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L). The objectives of this study were to construct a high-density linkage map and to identify the underlying genetic basis of fruit quality traits in blueberry. A total of 287 F individuals derived from a cross between two southern highbush blueberry cultivars, 'Reveille' and 'Arlen', were phenotyped over three years (2016-2018) for fruit quality-related traits, including titratable acidity, pH, total soluble solids, and fruit weight.

Oxylipins are bioactive lipid oxidation products, have vital regulatory roles in numerous physiological processes including inflammation, and can be impacted by diet. This study determined if 2-weeks of blueberry and/or acute banana ingestion influenced generation of n-6 and n-3 PUFA-derived oxylipins during recovery from exercise-induced physiological stress. Cyclists ( = 59, 39 ± 2 years of age) were randomized to freeze-dried blueberry or placebo groups, and ingested 26 grams/d (1 cup/d blueberries equivalent) for 2 weeks.

CAsE-PE cells are an arsenic-transformed, human prostate epithelial line containing oncogenic mutations in KRAS compared to immortalized, normal KRAS parent cells, RWPE-1. We previously reported increased copy number of mutated KRAS in CAsE-PE cells, suggesting gene amplification. As an extension of their orchestration of intracellular pathways, secretion of extracellular heat shock proteins (HSPs) is an emerging paradigm of homeostasis imperative to multicellular organization. Extracellular HSP is axiomatic to the survival of cells during tumorigenesis; proportional representation of specific HSP family members is indicative of invasive potential and prognosis. Further significance has been added by the knowledge that all cancer-derived exosomes have surface-exposed HSPs that reflect the membrane topology of cells that secrete them.

We recently conducted RNA-Seq analysis on liver RNA from male rats exposed to the carcinogen, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), for 90 days prior to liver tumor onset. Among >1,000 differentially expressed transcripts, several novel, unannotated Cufflinks-assembled transcripts, or HAfTs (Hepatic Aflatoxin Transcripts) were found.

We compared the performance of gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS) for metabolite biomarker discovery. Metabolite extracts from 109 human serum samples were analyzed on both platforms with a pooled serum sample analyzed after every 9 biological samples for the purpose of quality control (QC). The experimental data derived from the pooled QC samples showed that the GC×GC-MS platform detected about three times as many peaks as the GC-MS platform at a signal-to-noise ratio SNR ≥ 50, and three times the number of metabolites were identified by mass spectrum matching with a spectral similarity score Rsim ≥ 600.

A method was developed to distinguish Vaccinium species based on leaf extracts using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Reference spectra were measured on leaf extracts from several species, including lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), oval leaf huckleberry (Vaccinium ovalifolium), and cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon). Using principal component analysis, these leaf extracts were resolved in the scores plot.

We previously reported that continuous 24-month costimulation blockade by abatacept significantly slows the decline of β-cell function after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. In a mechanistic extension of that study, we evaluated peripheral blood immune cell subsets (CD4, CD8-naive, memory and activated subsets, myeloid and plasmacytoid dendritic cells, monocytes, B lymphocytes, CD4(+)CD25(high) regulatory T cells, and invariant NK T cells) by flow cytometry at baseline and 3, 6, 12, 24, and 30 months after treatment initiation to discover biomarkers of therapeutic effect. Using multivariable analysis and lagging of longitudinally measured variables, we made the novel observation in the placebo group that an increase in central memory (CM) CD4 T cells (CD4(+)CD45R0(+)CD62L(+)) during a preceding visit was significantly associated with C-peptide decline at the subsequent visit.
