Objective: We compared the effectiveness and safety of polidocanol 1% endovenous microfoam ablation vs endovenous thermal ablation with radiofrequency or laser energy for treatment of venous insufficiency caused by lower extremity truncal vein incompetence via network meta-analysis of published comparative evidence.
Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review following best practices, including a prospective protocol. We screened studies published in English from 2000 to 2023 for randomized and nonrandomized studies reporting direct or indirect comparisons between polidocanol 1% endovenous microfoam and endovenous thermal ablation.

Purpose: When operating near cranial motor nerves, transient postoperative weakness of target muscles lasting weeks to months is often observed. As nerves are typically intact at a procedure's completion, paresis is hypothesized to result from a combination of neurapraxia and axonotmesis. As both neurapraxia and axonotmesis involve Schwann cell injury and require remyelination, we developed an in vitro RSC96 Schwann cell model of injury using hydrogen peroxide (HO) to induce oxidative stress and investigated the efficacy of candidate therapeutic agents to promote RSC96 viability.

Introduction: Menthol tobacco products have been marketed disproportionately to communities of color for decades.
Methods: In Los Angeles County, California, a health marketing campaign, which used glossy visuals and attractive people in appealing poses, reminiscent of tobacco marketing tactics, was created and implemented to educate smokers on the health risks of using menthol cigarettes. The campaign encouraged smokers to make a quit attempt by offering access to free or low-cost resources through the Kick It California quitline and the LAQuits website (laquits.

Physical activity (PA) is a promising therapeutic for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Only a handful of meta-analyses have studied the impact of PA interventions on regional brain volumes, and none to date has solely included studies on effect of PA on regional brain volumes in individuals with cognitive impairment (CI). In this meta-analysis, we examined whether there is support for the hypothesis that PA interventions positively impact hippocampal volume (HV) in individuals with CI.

In primates, high-acuity vision is mediated by the fovea, a small specialized central region of the retina. The fovea, unique to the anthropoid lineage among mammals, undergoes notable neuronal morphological changes during postnatal maturation. However, the extent of cellular similarity across anthropoid foveas and the molecular underpinnings of foveal maturation remain unclear.

In the quest to combat insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), allogenic pancreatic islet cell therapy sourced from deceased donors represents a significant therapeutic advance. However, the applicability of this approach is hampered by donor scarcity and the demand for sustained immunosuppression. Human induced pluripotent stem cells are a game-changing resource for generating synthetic functional insulin-producing β cells.

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is characterized by extensive pulmonary vascular remodeling caused by plexiform and obliterative lesions, media hypertrophy, inflammatory cell infiltration, and alterations of the adventitia. We sought to test the hypothesis that microscopic IPAH vascular lesions express unique molecular profiles, which collectively are different from control pulmonary arteries. We used digital spatial transcriptomics to profile the genomewide differential transcriptomic signature of key pathological lesions (plexiform, obliterative, intima+media hypertrophy, and adventitia) in IPAH lungs ( = 11) and compared these data with the intima+media hypertrophy and adventitia of control pulmonary artery ( = 5).

Background: Biportal endoscopic spine surgery is an effective minimally invasive technique for treating common lumbar pathologies. We aim to evaluate the impact of intraoperative tranexamic acid (TXA) use on postoperative blood loss in biportal endoscopic decompression surgery.
Methods: Patients undergoing biportal endoscopic lumbar discectomies and decompressions either by same day surgery or overnight stay at a single institution beginning in October 2021 were prospectively enrolled.
Arterial blood pressure (ABP) and photoplethysmography (PPG) waveforms contain valuable clinical information and play a crucial role in cardiovascular health monitoring, medical research, and managing medical conditions. The features extracted from PPG waveforms have various clinical applications ranging from blood pressure monitoring to nociception monitoring, while features from ABP waveforms can be used to calculate cardiac output and predict hypertension or hypotension. In recent years, many machine learning models have been proposed to utilize both PPG and ABP waveform features for these healthcare applications.

The complex role of the gut microbiome in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders is an emerging area of research, and there is considerable interest in understanding how diet can alter the composition and function of the microbiome. Prebiotics and probiotics have been shown to beneficially modulate the gut microbiome, which underlies their potential for benefit in GI conditions. Formulating specific recommendations for the public regarding these dietary supplements has been difficult due to the significant heterogeneity between strains, doses, and duration of treatment investigated across studies, as well as safety concerns with administering live organisms.

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibition has revolutionized the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Durable responses, however, are observed only in a subpopulation of patients. Defective antigen presentation and an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) can lead to deficient T cell recruitment and ICB resistance.

Sleep is an evolutionarily conserved state that supports brain functions, including synaptic plasticity, in species across the animal kingdom. Here, we examine the neuroanatomical and cell-type distribution of presynaptic scaling in the fly brain after sleep loss. We previously found that sleep loss drives accumulation of the active zone scaffolding protein Bruchpilot (BRP) within cholinergic Kenyon cells of the mushroom body (MB), but not in other classes of MB neurons.

Unlabelled: Long-term physical functioning trajectories following distal forearm fracture are unknown. We found that women with versus those without distal forearm fracture were more likely to experience a 5-year decline in physical functioning, independent of initial physical functioning level. This association was most evident among women 80 years and older.

The potential risk for mental health conditions over the menopause transition shapes women's expectations and informs putative physiological mechanisms regulating women's mental health. We review evidence from prospective studies reporting on associations between mental health conditions and the menopause transition. Major depressive disorder and the more prevalent subthreshold depressive symptoms are the most common conditions studied.

Introduction: We document the quality, veracity, and comprehensiveness of recurrent UTI information on YouTube to increase health care workers' (HCWs') awareness of UTI-related content online, and to identify deficits in understanding, clarify misconceptions, and reduce stigmatization risk.
Methods: High-traffic topic search terms were curated by Google Trends to extract 200 videos, of which 45 met inclusion criteria. Five independent reviewers used a standardized questionnaire based on the AUA recurrent UTI guidelines to assess the definition of UTI, marketing content, prophylaxis/prevention strategies, and antibiotic use/stewardship.
