Strain engineering is an effective way to modify functional properties of thin films. Recently, the importance of octahedral rotations in pervoskite films has been recognized in discovering and designing new functional phases. Octahedral behavior of SrRuO3 film as a popular electrode in heterostructured devices is of particular interest for its probable interfacial coupling of octahedra with the functional overlayers.

Memory dynamics in attractor networks.

Comput Intell Neurosci

January 2016

School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 639798.

As can be represented by neurons and their synaptic connections, attractor networks are widely believed to underlie biological memory systems and have been used extensively in recent years to model the storage and retrieval process of memory. In this paper, we propose a new energy function, which is nonnegative and attains zero values only at the desired memory patterns. An attractor network is designed based on the proposed energy function.

Ultrahigh-capacity non-periodic photon sieves operating in visible light.

Nat Commun

May 2015

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, 4 Engineering Drive 3, Singapore 117576, Singapore.

Miniaturization of optical structures makes it possible to control light at the nanoscale, but on the other hand it imposes a challenge of accurately handling numerous unit elements in a miniaturized device with aperiodic and random arrangements. Here, we report both the new analytical model and experimental demonstration of the photon sieves with ultrahigh-capacity of subwavelength holes (over 34 thousands) arranged in two different structural orders of randomness and aperiodicity. The random photon sieve produces a uniform optical hologram with high diffraction efficiency and free from twin images that are usually seen in conventional holography, while the aperiodic photon sieve manifests sub-diffraction-limit focusing in air.

The study of the resonant behavior of silicon nanostructures provides a new route for achieving efficient control of both electric and magnetic components of light. We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that enhancement of localized electric and magnetic fields can be achieved in a silicon nanodimer. For the first time, we experimentally observe hotspots of the magnetic field at visible wavelengths for light polarized across the nanodimer's primary axis, using near-field scanning optical microscopy.

Data Storage Institute, Agency for Science, Technology and Research, 5 Engineering Drive 1, Singapore 117608, Singapore.

We report an experiment in which one determines, with least tomographic effort, whether an unknown two-photon polarization state is entangled or separable. The method measures whole families of optimal entanglement witnesses. We introduce adaptive measurement schemes that greatly speed up the entanglement detection.

Ultrafast phase-change logic device driven by melting processes.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

September 2014

Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 1EW, United Kingdom;

The ultrahigh demand for faster computers is currently tackled by traditional methods such as size scaling (for increasing the number of devices), but this is rapidly becoming almost impossible, due to physical and lithographic limitations. To boost the speed of computers without increasing the number of logic devices, one of the most feasible solutions is to increase the number of operations performed by a device, which is largely impossible to achieve using current silicon-based logic devices. Multiple operations in phase-change-based logic devices have been achieved using crystallization; however, they can achieve mostly speeds of several hundreds of nanoseconds.

Robustness of topological Hall effect of nontrivial spin textures.

Sci Rep

May 2014

Data Storage Institute, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) DSI Building, 5 Engineering Drive 1, Singapore 117608, Singapore.

We analyze the topological Hall conductivity (THC) of topologically nontrivial spin textures like magnetic vortices and skyrmions and investigate its possible application in the readback for magnetic memory based on those spin textures. Under adiabatic conditions, such spin textures would theoretically yield quantized THC values, which are related to topological invariants such as the winding number and polarity, and as such are insensitive to fluctuations and smooth deformations. However, in a practical setting, the finite size of spin texture elements and the influence of edges may cause them to deviate from their ideal configurations.

Topological state transport in topological insulators under the influence of hexagonal warping and exchange coupling to in-plane magnetizations.

Sci Rep

1] Data Storage Institute, Agency for Science, Technology and Research [2] Computational Nanoelectronics and Nano-device Laboratory, Electronic and Computer Engineering Department, National University of Singapore.

A hexagonal warping term has been proposed recently to explain the experimentally observed 2D equal energy contours of the surface states of the topological insulator Bi2Te3. Differing from the Dirac fermion Hamiltonian, the hexagonal warping term leads to the opening up of a band gap by an in-plane magnetization. We study the transmission between two Bi2Te3 segments subjected to different in-plane magnetizations and potentials.

Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center, Department of Precision Instrument, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China.

Learning scheme is the key to the utilization of spike-based computation and the emulation of neural/synaptic behaviors toward realization of cognition. The biological observations reveal an integrated spike time- and spike rate-dependent plasticity as a function of presynaptic firing frequency. However, this integrated rate-temporal learning scheme has not been realized on any nano devices.

Split-ball resonator as a three-dimensional analogue of planar split-rings.

Nat Commun

April 2015

Data Storage Institute, A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research), 5 Engineering Drive 1, 117608 Singapore, Singapore.

Split-ring resonators are basic elements of metamaterials, which can induce a magnetic response in metallic nanosctructures. Tunability of such response up to the visible frequency range is still a challenge. Here we introduce the concept of the split-ball resonator and demonstrate the strong magnetic response in the visible for both gold and silver spherical plasmonic nanoparticles with nanometre scale cuts.

Beyond the hybridization effects in plasmonic nanoclusters: diffraction-induced enhanced absorption and scattering.

Data Storage Institute, A*STAR (Agency for Science Technology and Research), DSI Building, 5 Engineering Drive 1, 117608, Singapore; Department of Physics, Imperial College London, London, SW7 2AZ, United Kingdom; Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, 117576, Singapore.

It is demonstrated herein both theoretically and experimentally that Young's interference can be observed in plasmonic structures when two or three nanoparticles with separation on the order of the wavelength are illuminated simultaneously by a plane wave. This effect leads to the formation of intermediate-field hybridized modes with a character distinct of those mediated by near-field and/or far-field radiative effects. The physical mechanism for the enhancement of absorption and scattering of light due to plasmonic Young's interference is revealed, which we explain through a redistribution of the Poynting vector field and the formation of near-field subwavelength optical vortices.

To explore the influence of chunking on the capacity limits of working memory, a model for chunking in sequential working memory is proposed, using hierarchical bidirectional inhibition-connected neural networks with winnerless competition. With the assumption of the existence of an upper bound to the inhibitory weights in neurobiological networks, it is shown that chunking increases the number of memorized items in working memory from the "magical number 7" to 16 items. The optimal number of chunks and the number of the memorized items in each chunk are the "magical number 4".

Optical property study of FePt-C nanocomposite thin film for heat-assisted magnetic recording.

Opt Express

April 2013

Data Storage Institute, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A-STAR), 117608 Singapore.

Optical properties of the FePt-C nanocomposite thin film that was synthesized by sputtering with MgO/NiTa underlayer on glass substrate have been determined by an approach combining spectroscopic ellipsometry and transmission over the wavelength range of 380 - 1700 nm. It was observed that the refractive index is larger than the extinction coefficient, indicating that free electron absorption is not the dominant optical transition in the FePt-C thin film. Compared with FePt thin film, the FePt-C thin film has smaller optical constants, which lead to better optical performance including smaller optical spot on recording media and higher transducer efficiency for heat assisted magnetic recording.

Institute for Quantum Science and Technology, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2N 1N4.

We develop a framework for solving the action of a three-channel passive optical interferometer on single-photon pulse inputs to each channel using SU(3) group-theoretic methods, which can be readily generalized to higher-order photon-coincidence experiments. We show that features of the coincidence plots versus relative time delays of photons yield information about permanents, immanants, and determinants of the interferometer SU(3) matrix.

Directional visible light scattering by silicon nanoparticles.

Nat Commun

June 2013

Data Storage Institute, Advanced Concepts and Nanotechnology Division, 5 Engineering Drive 1, Singapore 117608, Singapore.

Directional light scattering by spherical silicon nanoparticles in the visible spectral range is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. These unique optical properties arise because of simultaneous excitation and mutual interference of magnetic and electric dipole resonances inside a single nanosphere. Such behaviour is similar to Kerker's-type scattering by hypothetic magneto-dielectric particles predicted theoretically three decades ago.

We analyzed the electrophysiological response of an isolated rod photoreceptor of Xenopus laevis under stimulation by coherent and pseudothermal light sources. Using the suction-electrode technique for single cell recordings and a fiber optics setup for light delivery allowed measurements of the major statistical characteristics of the rod response. The results indicate differences in average responses of rod cells to coherent and pseudothermal light of the same intensity and also differences in signal-to-noise ratios and second-order intensity correlation functions.

Our paper explores the interaction of persistent firing axonal and presynaptic processes in the generation of short term memory for habituation. We first propose a model of a sensory neuron whose axon is able to switch between passive conduction and persistent firing states, thereby triggering short term retention to the stimulus. Then we propose a model of a habituating synapse and explore all nine of the behavioral characteristics of short term habituation in a two neuron circuit.

Spherical silicon nanoparticles with sizes of a few hundreds of nanometers represent a unique optical system. According to theoretical predictions based on Mie theory they can exhibit strong magnetic resonances in the visible spectral range. The basic mechanism of excitation of such modes inside the nanoparticles is very similar to that of split-ring resonators, but with one important difference that silicon nanoparticles have much smaller losses and are able to shift the magnetic resonance wavelength down to visible frequencies.

This paper presents an improved indirect-driven self-sensing actuation circuit for robust vibration control of piezoelectrically-actuated flexible structures in mechatronic systems. The circuit acts as a high-pass filter and provides better self-sensing strain signals with wider sensing bandwidth and higher signal-to-noise ratio. An adaptive non-model-based control is used to compensate for the structural vibrations using the strain signals from the circuit.

A complex-envelope (CE) alternating-direction-implicit (ADI) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) approach to treat light-matter interaction self-consistently with electromagnetic field evolution for efficient simulations of active photonic devices is presented for the first time (to our best knowledge). The active medium (AM) is modeled using an efficient multilevel system of carrier rate equations to yield the correct carrier distributions, suitable for modeling semiconductor/solid-state media accurately. To include the AM in the CE-ADI-FDTD method, a first-order differential system involving CE fields in the AM is first set up.
