MicroRNA-326 sensitizes human glioblastoma cells to curcumin via the SHH/GLI1 signaling pathway.

Glioblastoma multiforme is the most malignant and common brain tumor in adults and is characterized by poor survival and high resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Among the new chemotherapy drugs, curcumin, a popular dietary supplement, has proven to have a potent anticancer effect on a variety of cancer cell types; however, it remains difficult to achieve a satisfactory therapeutic effect with curcumin using the traditional single-drug treatment. In this study, we found that expression of miR-326, a tumor suppressor microRNA in various tumor types, resulted in a marked increase of curcumin-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis and a decrease of proliferation and migration in glioma cells.

Long non-coding RNA HOTAIR modulates HLA-G expression by absorbing miR-148a in human cervical cancer.

The long non-coding RNA HOX transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR) has been found overexpressed in many human malignancies and involved in tumor progression and metastasis. However, little is known about the potential biological roles of HOTAIR in tumor escape. In the present study, the expression of HOTAIR was detected in 59 paired cervical cancer tissue samples by real-time PCR and then subjected to correlation analysis with clinical features.

Effects of intravascular embolization operation on adult VGAD.

Objective: To analyze the effects of intravascular embolization on adult vein of Galen aneurysmal dilatation (VGAD) patients.

Patients And Methods: Five consecutively selected patients (median age of 56.4 years) were diagnosed with VGAD in our hospital from February 2010 to February 2015 and treated with intravascular embolization.

Prevalence and factors associated with occupational burnout among HIV/AIDS healthcare workers in China: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Burnout is a psychosomatic syndrome characterized by three dimensions (emotional exhaustion [EE], feelings of depersonalization [DP], and reduced personal accomplishment [PA]). We determined the prevalence of burnout and mental health status between HIV/AIDS healthcare workers and other healthcare workers, and determined the factors associated with burnout of HIV/AIDS healthcare workers.

Methods: All participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire.

Diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome assessed using high-frequency ultrasonography: cross-section areas of 8-site median nerve.

This study aimed to determine the most suitable site for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) by examining an 8-site measurement of the median nerve's cross-sectional area (CSA). A total of 36 wrists of 26 patients with nerve conduction study (NCS) proven CTS, along with 34 wrists of 23 controls whose age and gender were matched with the patients, were evaluated with ultrasonography. The CSAs of the median nerve at eight predetermined sites including at the sites of 3, 2, and 1 cm proximal to the wrist crease, wrist crease, as well as at the sites of 1, 2, 3.

Prognostic significance of proline, glutamic acid, leucine rich protein 1 (PELP1) in triple-negative breast cancer: a retrospective study on 129 cases.

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is associated with an aggressive clinical course due to the lack of therapeutic targets. Therefore, identifying reliable prognostic biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets for patients with TNBC is required. Proline, glutamic acid, leucine rich protein 1 (PELP1) is a novel steroidal receptor co-regulator, functioning as an oncogene and its expression is maintained in estrogen receptor (ER) negative breast cancers.

Association between single nucleotide polymorphisms of X-ray repair cross-complementing protein 4 gene and development of pancreatic cancer.

We performed a study to evaluate X-ray repair cross-complementing protein 4 (XRCC4) gene polymorphisms and the development of pancreatic cancer. A case-control study including 206 patients with newly diagnosed primary pancreatic cancer and 412 controls was performed between January 2011 and October 2013 in a Chinese population. Genotypes of XRCC4 rs1805377, rs2075685, rs2075686 and rs1056503 were determined using polymerase chain reaction combined with a restriction fragment length polymorphism assay.

Pilot study special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 1 investigating as a potential biomarker for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the expression of special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 1 (SATB1) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and assess the correlation between its expression and the clinicopathological features and prognosis of the disease. SATB1 expression in ESCC tissue was determined by using immunohistochemical analysis, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and western blot analysis. The relationship between SATB1 expression and clinicopathological features was examined by using the chi-squared test, and the survival rate was calculated by using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve.

miR-340 inhibits glioblastoma cell proliferation by suppressing CDK6, cyclin-D1 and cyclin-D2.

Glioblastoma development is often associated with alteration in the activity and expression of cell cycle regulators, such as cyclin-dependent kinases (CKDs) and cyclins, resulting in aberrant cell proliferation. Recent studies have highlighted the pivotal roles of miRNAs in controlling the development and growth of glioblastoma. Here, we provide evidence for a function of miR-340 in the inhibition of glioblastoma cell proliferation.

Oridonin inhibits mTOR signaling and the growth of lung cancer tumors.

Oridonin, an active diterpenoid isolated from Rabdosia rubescens, has been widely used for treatment of various types of cancer. It has been shown that oridonin produced an antiproliferative effect in a lung cancer cell line in vitro. However, the antitumor effects of oridonin in lung cancer cells xenograft mice were poorly understood.

Liver fibrosis evaluation by ARFI and APRI in chronic hepatitis C.

Aim: To explore the value of liver fibrosis assessment by acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) and the AST/PLT ratio index (APRI) in chronic hepatitis C patients.

Methods: One hundred and twenty eight patients with chronic hepatitis C were examined using ARFI elastometry and APRI, calculated according to known formulae. The gold standard of liver biopsy was referred; ROC curve analysis was used to assess all ARFI and APRI values.

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease in Northern China: a prospective population-based study.

Aims & Backgrounds: Although inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are emerging and increasing in China, epidemiologic data are rarely available. This study was to investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of IBD in Northern China.

Methods: This is a prospective, population-based study of incidence of IBD in Daqing, Heilongjiang province of Northern China from March 1, 2012 to February 28, 2013.

[Effects of Busui Shengxue Granule on bFGF and bFGFR in bone marrow derived stroma cells of chronic aplastic anemia patients].

Objective: To observe the therapeutic effects of Busui Shengxue Granule (BSSXG) on chronic aplastic anemia (CAA) patients and its effects on bone marrow derived stroma cells (BMDSCs) correlated cytokines.

Methods: One hundred and twenty-four patients with CAA were randomly assigned to two groups according to the random digit table. Patients in the test group (61 cases) were treated with BSSXG, while those in the control group (63 cases) were treated with Zaizao Shengxue Tablet (ZST).
