Competitive tenders on analogue hospital pharmaceuticals in Denmark 2017-2020.

J Pharm Policy Pract

October 2022

Department of Health Science and Technology, Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark.

Background: Competitive tenders on pharmaceuticals are one of the most effective cost-containment instruments in healthcare systems. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated, among other things, in markets for generic medicine and biosimilars. In Denmark, an internationally unique model for competitive tenders on analogue substitutable pharmaceuticals has been developed and implemented for all public hospitals.

Background: Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) has been demonstrated to be cost- and clinically effective. There is a need, however, for increased therapist contact for some patient groups. Combining iCBT with traditional face-to-face (FtF) consultations in a blended format may produce a new treatment format (B-CBT) with multiple benefits from both traditional CBT and iCBT, such as individual adaptation, lower costs than traditional therapy, wide geographical and temporal availability, and possibly lower threshold to implementation.

Background And Objective: Until 2009, only reusable bronchoscopes were marketed, but the introduction and widespread adoption of single-use flexible bronchoscopes (SFBs) as an emerging technology has since accelerated. Several studies have described the costs of reusable flexible bronchoscopes (RFBs) and SFBs. This meta-analysis aimed to compile the current published evidence to analyse the cost of different scenarios using RFBs and SFBs.

The analogue substitution model: Introducing competition in the absence of generic substitution in Danish hospitals.

Health Policy

September 2022

Danish Center for Healthcare Improvements, Aalborg University, Fredrik Bajers Vej 5, 170, 9220 Aalborg Ø, Denmark; Nordic Institute of Health Economics, Gammel Munkegade 1, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. Electronic address:

Increasingly advanced medicines have created monopolies in treatment areas with no viable options for generic substitution due to patent protection. As health care systems are increasingly under pressure to deliver health care improvements, costs become prohibitive as budgets are under pressure. To create financial flexibility, Danish regional authorities have over the period from 2009 until today developed, implemented, and gradually increased the use of a new model for analogue medicine substitution.

Background: Patient self-managed anticoagulant treatment with warfarin (PSM) has been proposed as an alternative to direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF); however, direct evidence on the cost effectiveness of PSM compared with DOACs is lacking. We aimed to evaluate the cost effectiveness of PSM versus DOACs for NVAF patients in the Danish healthcare setting using a model-based cost-utility analysis.

Methods: A cost-utility analysis was performed using a decision-analytic model including two treatment alternatives: continuous PSM and DOACs.

Introduction: The value set used when calculating quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) is most often based on stated preference data elicited from a representative sample of the general population. However, having a severe disease may alter a person's health preferences, which may imply that, for some patient groups, experienced QALYs may differ from those that are estimated via standard methods. This study aims to model 5-level EuroQol 5-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) valuations based on preferences elicited from a sample of patients who have survived a stay in a Danish intensive care unit (ICU) and to compare these with the preferences of the general population.

Background: Spotting and light vaginal bleeding are common and usually harmless symptoms in early pregnancy. Still, vaginal bleeding may be the first sign of an abortion and often causes distress to pregnant women and leads to an expectation of an ultrasonography examination of the uterus. As point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is increasingly being integrated into general practice, these patients may be clinically evaluated and managed by general practitioners (GPs).

Introduction: Over the last two decades, the use of opioids for the treatment of chronic pain in England has steadily increased despite lack of evidence of both long-term effectiveness in pain relief and significant, well-documented physical and mental adverse events. Guidelines recommend tapering when harms outweigh benefits, but the addictive nature of opioids hinders simple dose-reduction strategies. Improving the Well-being of people with Opioid Treated CHronic pain (I-WOTCH) trial tests a multicomponent self-management intervention aimed to help patients with chronic non-malignant pain taper opioid doses.
