Background/aim: Matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP13) has been reported to be involved in tumor development and progression, including of colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed at evaluating whether the MMP13 rs2252070 gene polymorphism is associated with clinicopathological factors and its influence on long-term survival in Swedish patients with CRC.
Patients And Methods: A total of 723 patients with CRC were genotyped using TaqMan single nucleotide polymorphism assays based on polymerase chain reaction.

Background: Anti-SARS-CoV-2 and immunomodulatory drugs are important for treating clinically severe patients with respiratory distress symptoms. Alpha- and gamma-mangostins (AM and GM) were previously reported as potential 3C-like protease (3CL) and Angiotensin-converting enzyme receptor 2 (ACE2)-binding inhibitors .
Objective: We aimed to evaluate two active compounds, AM and GM, from for their antivirals against SARS-CoV-2 in live virus culture systems and their cytotoxicities using standard methods.

Uncontrolled blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Fixed-dose combination (FDC) therapy offers a promising approach to addressing this challenge by providing a convenient single-tablet solution that enhances the effectiveness of blood pressure control. In our systematic review, we assess the effectiveness of perindopril/amlodipine FDC in managing blood pressure.

Aim: To describe prevalence of early initiation of breastfeeding and associated factors among Vietnamese mothers.
Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was used to survey 1812 mothers whose infants were aged 0 to less than 30 months in multi-center Vietnam. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated independently with early initiation of breastfeeding.

Dengue infection is a global health problem as climate change facilitates the spread of mosquito vectors. Infected patients could progress to severe plasma leakage and hemorrhagic shock, where current standard treatment remains supportive. Previous reports suggested that several flavonoid derivatives inhibited mosquito-borne flaviviruses.

Chikungunya virus is a re-emerging arbovirus that has caused epidemic outbreaks in recent decades. Patients in older age groups with high viral load and severe immunologic response during acute infection are likely to develop chronic arthritis and severe joint pain. Currently, no antiviral drug is available.

Background: Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of death in diabetic patients. Speckle tracking echocardiography can early detect left ventricular systolic dysfunction even when normal ejection fraction.
Objective: The study aims to evaluate left ventricular systolic function by Speckle tracking echocardiography and its relation with cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetic patients.

Gut dysbiosis and changes in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) occur in end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, the degree of these changes in the gut microbiome and serum SCFA profiles in the early stages of CKD, particularly in CKD of unknown etiology (CKDu), is unclear. We herein investigated the gut microbiome and SCFA profiles of early-stage CKD patients (CKD stages 1-3) in a community in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand. Seventy-two parasite-free participants were distributed among a healthy control group (HC, n=18) and three patient groups (an underlying disease group [UD, n=18], early-stage CKD with underlying disease [CKD-UD, n=18], and early-stage CKD of unknown etiology, [CKDu, n=18]).

Objectives: To achieve the therapeutic effects, antibiotics must penetrate rapidly into infection sites and bind to targets. This study reviewed updated knowledge on the ability of antibiotics to penetrate into the lung, their physicochemical properties influencing the pulmonary penetration and their ability to bind to targets on pneumococci.
Methods: A search strategy was developed using PubMED, Web of Science, and ChEMBL.

Background: Adolescents who are willing to perform first aid can help prevent injuries and ultimately death among themselves and others involved in accidents or injuries. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of students' willingness to perform first aid procedures and additionally examine associated factors among high school students in Hue, Vietnam.
Methods: A cross-sectional study utilizing multi-stage stratified random sampling was conducted between April to July 2020 by investigating 798 high school students in Hue, Vietnam.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a malignancy of the biliary epithelium, can arise at any point in the biliary system. We previously reported that CIAPIN1 is detectable in the sera and that its overexpression was associated with poor prognosis and metastasis of CCA patients. In this study, we investigated further its expression in CCA tissues, biological functions, and related signaling pathways in CCA cells.

Background/aim: Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), transiently expressed on T cells, plays a pivotal role in the negative feedback regulation of T-cell activation and proliferation. The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of CTLA-4 gene polymorphism rs3087243 on CRC susceptibility and long-term survival in Swedish patients with CRC.
Patients And Methods: Genotypes of 491 patients and 433 healthy controls were determined, using TaqMan single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) assays based on polymerase chain reaction.

Due to the shared border with China, Vietnam faced risks from the COVID-19 pandemic at the early stages of the outbreak. Good hygiene practices were considered an effective prevention method, but there were only minimal data on the effectiveness of hygiene practices against the pandemic at the community level. Thus, this study aims to assess hygiene practices in society by using a community-based survey.

The present study combined the analysis of two transcriptional regulators, uVNTR and dVNTR, in the MAOA gene that is an enzyme responsible for the monoamine degradation and identified genetic interaction between these VNTRs in association with the nicotine dependence. The main impact is that when analyzing different populations in the genetic studies, the functionally meaningful variants should be combined rather than addressing individual elements separately (a mini polygenic risk score for a particular gene/locus). This combination is very rarely analyzed and therefore the study sets an example.

Objectives: This study aimed (1) to determine the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and TMJ osseous changes in elderly Vietnamese according to sex and residence, and (2) to investigate the association of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osseous changes with anxiety, depression, and limitation of mandibular function.
Methods: Elderly people living in Danang, Vietnam were recruited. Participants were screened for anxiety and depression using the self-reported 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively.

Nicotine dependence is an addiction to tobacco products and a global public health concern. Association between the SLC6A4 polymorphisms and nicotine dependence is controversial. Two variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) domains, termed HTTLPR and STin2, in the SLC6A4 gene are well characterized transcriptional regulatory elements.
