The maxillary sinus is the largest of the four paranasal sinuses in humans, and its close proximity to the teeth means that caution is required during dental treatment. In particular, implant surgeries involving the maxillary posterior teeth should include evaluating the inferior part of the maxillary sinus. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences by comparing the inferior part of the maxillary sinus based on the nasal cavity floor (NCF) between patients (male 30, female 30) genders through the use of the three-dimensional (3-D) program that can facilitate 3-D visualizations.

The present study applied a three-dimensional (3D) program to measure the distances from the maxillary sinus floor (MSF) to the lingual and buccal alveolar bone and also to the posterior superior alveolar foramen (PSAF), with the aim of determining differences according to gender. The study also attempted to verify the accuracy of measurements obtained from 3D images by performing comparisons with the results obtained in a preliminary study. The results showed that the alveolar bone length and the MAF-PSAF were generally larger in males than in females.

A Grunwald-Winstein treatment of the specific rates of solvolysis of α-bromoisobutyrophenone in 100% methanol and in several aqueous ethanol, methanol, acetone, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE), and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) mixtures gives a good logarithmic correlation against a linear combination of (solvent nucleophilicity) and (solvent ionizing power) values. The and sensitivity values are compared to those previously reported for α-bromoacetophenone and to those obtained from parallel treatments of literature specific rate values for the solvolyses of several tertiary mesylates containing a C(=O)R group attached at the α-carbon. Kinetic data obtained earlier by Pasto and Sevenair for the solvolyses of the same substrate in 75% aqueous ethanol (by weight) in the presence of silver perchlorate and perchloric acid are analyzed using multiple regression analysis.

Chicken is one of the most popular domesticated species worldwide, as it can serve an important role in agricultural as well as biomedical research fields. Because it inhabits almost every continent and presents diverse morphology and traits, the need of genetic markers for distinguishing each breed for various purposes has increased. The whole genome sequencing of three different breeds (White Leghorn, Korean domestic, and Araucana) that show similar coloring patterns, with the exception of the White Leghorn breed, have confirmed previously reported genomic alterations and identified many novel variants.

Biliary mucin was regarded as a major contributing factor in formation of pigment stones as well as cholesterol ones. The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of biliary mucin secretion in canine gallbladder epithelial (CGBE) cells treated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) with special reference to cyclooxygenase (COX) -2. Confluent CGBE cells were incubated with following compounds for 8, 12, and 24 hr: (1) serum-free medium, (2) serum-free medium containing LPS (100 microm/ml), (3) serum-free medium containing LPS (100 microm/ml) with NS-398 (10 microM), and (4) serum-free medium containing LPS (100 microm/ml) with indomethacin (10 microM).

This cephalometric study evaluated skeletal and dentoalveolar changes produced by rapid maxillary expansion and facial mask therapy in 85 subjects exhibiting a Class III malocclusion with a retruded maxilla. The skeletal maturity of individual patients was assessed on the basis of Fishman's skeletal maturity indicator (SMI), using hand-wrist radiographs at the initiation of treatment, to determine the relationship between the effect of maxillary protraction and skeletal age. Patients were divided into three groups: prepubertal growth peak group (SMI 1-3), pubertal growth peak group (SMI 4-7), and postpubertal growth peak group (SMI 8-11).

A lead-absorbing protein with superoxide dismutase activity from Streptomyces subrutilus.

A lead binding protein was purified from the culture filtrate of Streptomyces subrutilus P5. The subunit and native molecular weights were estimated to be 28 and 55 kDa, respectively, indicating that the protein was composed of two identical subunits. The inhibition pattern, the metal content analysis and the EPR spectrum confirmed that the protein was a superoxide dismutase containing Fe and Zn (FeZnSOD).

The specific rates of solvolysis of p-nitrobenzyl chloroformate are well correlated using the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, with a high sensitivity (l) to changes in solvent nucleophilicity (N(T)) and a moderate sensitivity (m) to changes in solvent ionizing power (Y(Cl)). The values are consistent with a rate-determining association within an association-dissociation pathway. The selectivity values (S) for the attack at the acyl carbon show a modest preference for ethanol over water and a relatively high preference for ethanol over 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE).

Performance evaluation of implantable artificial organs by sound spectrum analysis.

In this paper, a sound spectrum analyzing method was proposed to pre detect malfunctions of implantable artificial organs, such as an electromechanical total artificial heart (TAH) or prosthetic valves, without any percutaneous invasion. For this purpose, a sound detecting device was developed using a high sensitivity condenser microphone with a frequency range of more than 13 kHz. Output signals of this device are sampled at 100 kHz maximally, and sampled data are stored in an IBM PC (SamBo, Korea).
