Gradient porous carbon has become a potential electrode material for energy storage devices, including the aqueous zinc-ion hybrid capacitor (ZIHC). Compared with the sufficient studies on the fabrication of ZIHCs with high electrochemical performance, there is still lack of in-depth understanding of the underlying mechanisms of gradient porous structure for energy storage, especially the synergistic effect of ultramicropores (<1 nm) and micropores (1-2 nm). Here, we report a design principle for the gradient porous carbon structure used for ZIHC based on the data-mining machine learning (ML) method.

Using CO as the C1 source for N-formylation of amine is a crucial energy-storage pathway to address the greenhouse effect while generating high-value-added chemicals but is limited by the activation of inert molecules. Herein, a dual active site catalyst with high CO activation and dihydrogen dissociation capacity was fabricated by incorporating a Schiff base and Au nanoparticles (NPs) on silicon dioxide (SiO). The modification of the Schiff base not only provides an alkaline environment for CO absorption but also stabilizes Au NPs in a small and highly dispersed state, which regulates the electronic density of the metal for excellent H cleavage.

A cantilever-enhanced fiber-optic photoacoustic (PA) spectrophone is reported for trace gas detection at a low-pressure environment. A cantilever-based fiber-optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer (FPI) is utilized for simultaneous measurement of air pressure and PA pressure. Since the cantilever resonance frequency follows air pressure linearly, the fundamental frequency intensity modulation (1-IM) technique is applied to scan the frequency response of the solid PA signal from tube wall absorption for tracking the cantilever resonance frequency in real time.

A series of zinc phthalocyanine derivatives (ZnPcs) were designed by introducing different volumes of steric hindrance groups (chlorine atom, n-propyloxy, isopropyloxy, n-butoxy, isobutoxy, -butoxy, 2,4-di--butylphenoxy, 2,4-di--pentylphenoxy) on the peripheral and nonperipheral positions of phthalocyanine. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations presented that the substitution of sterically hindered 2,4-di--butylphenoxy or 2,4-di--pentylphenoxy on the peripheral positions effectively reduced the aggregation of ZnPcs, improving the solubility of ZnPcs, and the simultaneous substitution on the peripheral and nonperipheral positions could achieve ZnPcs with different colors. From the calculation results, six low-aggregation ZnPcs were synthesized for the first time.

Cofactors such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and its phosphorylated form (NADPH) play a crucial role in natural enzyme-catalyzed reactions for the synthesis of chemicals. However, the stoichiometric supply of NADH for artificial synthetic processes is uneconomical. Here, inspired by the process of cofactor NADPH regeneration in photosystem I (PSI), catalyst-modified photocathodes are constructed on the surface of polythiophene-based semiconductors (PTTH) via self-assembly for photoelectrochemical catalytic NADH regeneration.

Natural enzymes feature distinctive second spheres near their active sites, leading to exquisite catalytic reactivity. However, incumbent synthetic strategies offer limited versatility in functionalizing the second spheres of heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we prepare an enzyme-mimetic single Co-N atom catalyst with an elaborately configured pendant amine group in the second sphere via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, which switches the oxygen reduction reaction selectivity from the 4e to the 2e pathway under acidic conditions.

Nitroaromatics, as an important member and source of nitrogen-containing aromatics, is bringing enormous economic benefits in fields of pharmaceuticals, dyes, pesticides, functional materials, fertilizers, and explosives. Nonetheless, the notoriously polluting nitration industry, which suffers from excessive discharge of fumes and waste acids, poor functional group tolerance, and tremendous purification difficulty, renders mild, efficient, and environmentally friendly nitration a formidable challenge. Herein, we develop a visible-light-driven biocompatible arene C-H nitration strategy with good efficiency and regioselectivity, marvelous substrate applicability and functional group tolerance, and wide application in scale-up synthesis, total synthesis, and late-stage functionalization.
