Background: Prior studies suggest prevalence of heart failure (HF) has remained steady or progressively decreased over past 30 years in the general population. Whether this favourable trend occurred in adolescents and young adults aged 10-24 years has yet to be elucidated. We aim to identify the trends in the burden of HF in this young population from 1990 to 2021 to inform areas for targeted intervention and prevention efforts.

Background: Meniscus extrusion occurs in most elderly individuals and most patients after meniscus allograft transplantation. The risk factors and correlative factors of meniscus extrusion have been extensively studied. However, for using tendon autograft for meniscus reconstruction, both graft type and surgical method are different from those in previous studies on meniscus extrusion.

Article Synopsis
  • Trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS) and trans-oral laser microsurgery (TLM) are effective methods for identifying unknown primary cancers in the head and neck area, with a focus on tonsillectomy techniques.
  • A systematic review found that 65% of patients had their primary tumors identified using TORS and TLM, with better results from TLM compared to TORS, especially for HPV-related tumors.
  • Complications were relatively low, with nasogastric/gastrostomy issues occurring in 6% of cases, and hospitalization varied between 1 to over 7 days.

A nomogram of inflammatory indexes for preoperatively predicting the risk of lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer.

Tech Coloproctol

November 2024

Department of Colorectal Surgery, Dalian University Affiliated Xinhua Hospital, Dalian, No. 156, Wansui Street, Shahekou District, Dalian City, 116021, Liaoning Province, China.

Purpose: To investigate the independent risk factors associated with the development of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), focusing on preoperative systemic inflammatory indicators, and to construct a corresponding risk predictive model.

Materials And Methods: The clinical data of 241 patients with CRC who underwent surgery after the first diagnosis between January 2012 and December 2017 at our hospital were reviewed. A best logistic regression model was constructed by Lasso regression for multivariate analysis, from which a Nomogram was derived.

Objective: An alternative to conventional posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) is a PLIF with transpedicular oblique screw fixation system. An assessment of new fixation system's viability and efficacy is conducted through a comparison of its biomechanical properties with those of conventional PLIF.

Method: A comprehensive finite element model (FEM) of the lumbar regions L1-L5 was developed and the surgical segment L3-L4 was chosen to comprise the surgical models of both traditional PLIF and new PLIF.

Objective: Research into the effectiveness and applicability of deep learning, radiomics, and their integrated models based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for preoperative differentiation between Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (PCNSL) and Glioblastoma (GBM), along with an exploration of the interpretability of these models.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on MRI images and clinical data from 261 patients across two medical centers. The data were split into a training set (n = 153, medical center 1) and an external test set (n = 108, medical center 2).

Background: Poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) can stimulate fibrous tissue regeneration to exert a filling effect. However, severe inflammatory reactions and unsatisfactory effects remain a concern.

Objective: Herein, we describe the mechanism of action, efficacy, and safety of PLLA microspheres in suspension (PLLA-b-PEG/HA) for facial contouring and soft tissue augmentation.

Background: Dry eye is a chronic and multifactorial ocular surface disease caused by tear film instability or imbalance in the microenvironment of the ocular surface. It can lead to various discomforts such as inflammation of the ocular surface and visual issues. However, the mechanism of dry eye is not clear, which results in dry eye being only relieved but not cured in clinical practice.

Purpose: Although there is a growing emphasis on supportive care for cancer patients, those with colorectal cancer (CRC) who have ostomies require special attention in terms of their physical, psychological, spiritual, and social needs. However, there has been a lack of significant progress in meeting the supportive care needs of CRC survivors with ostomies. To bridge this gap, we conducted a prospective longitudinal study to track the trends in supportive care needs among CRC survivors with ostomies and identify any predictors over 6-month period.

Background: The effects of vitamin C supplementation on patients with septic shock remain controversial. We aimed to evaluate the effects of different vitamin C dosages on norepinephrine (NE) synthesis in adult patients with septic shock.

Methods: A total of 58 patients with septic shock admitted to our intensive care unit (ICU) between July 2021 and December 2022 were included.

AQP4-DARPin1: A Chimeric Antigen Based on Scaffold Protein DARPin for Efficient Detection of AQP4-IgG in NMOSD.

Biochemistry

April 2024

Liaoning Key Laboratory of Molecular Recognition and Imaging, School of Bioengineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116023, P. R. China.

AQP4-IgG is an autoantibody associated with neuromyelitis optica spectroscopic disorder (NMOSD), a central nervous system inflammatory disease that requires early diagnosis and treatment. We designed two fusion proteins, AQP4-DARPin1 and AQP4-DARPin2, comprising the complete antigenic epitopes of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) and the constant region of the scaffold protein DARPin. These fusion proteins were expressed and purified from and coated on microplates to develop an efficient method for detecting AQP4-IgG.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease that mainly manifests as dementia, muscle weakness, sensory disturbances, and autonomic nervous dysfunction. Herein, we report a 68-year-old Chinese woman who was hospitalized because of resting tremor and bradykinesia that had been present for 7 years. Five years prior, bradykinesia and hypermyotonia had become apparent.

One of the main goals of medicinal chemistry in recent years has been the development of new enzyme inhibitors and anti-cancer medicines. The isokaempferide' ability to inhibit the enzymes urease, elastase, and collagenase were also studied. The results showed that isokaempferide was the most effective compound against the assigned enzymes, with IC values of 23.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, yet treatment options are limited. Clozapine (CLZ), an antipsychotic used for schizophrenia, has potential as a PD treatment. CLZ and its metabolite, Clozapine-N-Oxide (CNO), show neuroprotective effects on dopaminergic neurons, with mechanisms needing further investigation.

At present, both the incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer are on the rise, making early screening a crucial tool in reducing the fatality rate. Although colonoscopy is the recommended method according to the guidelines, compliance tends to be poor. The fecal immunochemical test (FIT), a new technology that uses latex immunoturbidimetry to detect fecal blood, offers high specificity and sensitivity.
