Background: The construct of social vulnerability attempts to understand social circumstances not merely as a descriptor, but as a predictor of adverse health events. It can be measured by aggregating social deficits in a social vulnerability index (SVI). We describe a standard procedure for constructing a multi-level SVI using two working examples.

Purpose: To assess the impact of working distance (WD) on optical distortion in optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging and to evaluate the effectiveness of optical distortion correction in achieving consistent retinal Bruch's membrane (BM) layer curvature, regardless of variations in WD.
Methods: Ten subjects underwent OCT imaging with four serial macular volume scans, each employing distinct WD settings adjusted by balancing the sample and reference arm of the OCT interferometer (eye length settings changed). Either of two types of 30° standard objectives (SOs) was used.

Background: More habitual time spent engaging in prolonged sedentary behaviors increases the risk of developing hypertension. Beat-by-beat systolic (SBPV) and diastolic blood pressure variability (DBPV) are more pronounced in persons with hypertension and may be an early manifestation of blood pressure dysregulation. We tested the hypothesis that a single bout of prolonged sitting augments very short-term SBPV and DBPV.

Background: This study investigated the association of intra-abdominal adhesions with the risk of peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter complications.
Methods: Individuals undergoing laparoscopic PD catheter insertion were prospectively enrolled from eight centers in Canada and the United States. Patients were grouped based on the presence of adhesions observed during catheter insertion.

The frailty index (FI) uses a deficit accumulation approach to derive a single, comprehensive, and replicable indicator of age-related health status. Yet, many researchers continue to seek a single "frailty biomarker" to facilitate clinical screening. We investigated the prognostic accuracy of 70 individual biomarkers in predicting mortality, comparing each with a composite FI.

For decades, topical corticosteroids have been the mainstay of treatment for mild-to-moderate inflammatory skin diseases, even though only short-term use is approved for these agents and systemic inflammation is not addressed. Increased understanding of the immunopathogenesis of these conditions, especially for psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, has facilitated the development of antibody-based drugs that neutralize single key cytokines or their associated receptors, such as interleukin (IL)-17A/F, IL-23, and IL-17RA in psoriasis and IL-13 and IL-4Rα in atopic dermatitis. However, oral therapy is still preferred by many patients owing to the ease of use and needle-free administration.

Background: Physical activity and exercise (PAE) counselling and exercise prescriptions increase patient physical activity. However, the perceptions/practices of chiropractors are poorly understood.
Methods: We surveyed the practices among chiropractors working in Canada (n=50) and Internationally (n=37).

Background: Consistent and reproducible estimates of the underlying true level of frailty are essential for risk stratification and monitoring of health changes. The purpose of this study is to examine the reliability of the frailty index (FI).
Methods: A total of 426 community-dwelling older adults from the FRequent health Assessment In Later life (FRAIL70+) study in Austria were interviewed biweekly up to 7 times.

Background: Social vulnerability is the accumulation of disadvantageous social circumstances resulting in susceptibility to adverse health outcomes. Associated with increased mortality, cognitive decline, and disability, social vulnerability has primarily been studied in large population databases rather than frail hospitalized individuals. We examined how social vulnerability contributes to hospital outcomes and use of hospital resources for older adults presenting to the Emergency Department.

Elevated pulse wave velocity (PWV) determined arterial stiffness is a prominent marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Exercise training delays the progression of CVD, but existing reviews on the impact of training on PWV are conflicting. We synthesized the evidence on the effects of exercise training interventions on PWV.

Background: Hospitalized older patients spend most of the waking hours in bed, even if they can walk independently. Excessive bedrest contributes to the development of frailty and worse hospital outcomes. We describe the study protocol for the Breaking Bad Rest Study, a randomized clinical trial aimed to promoting more movement in acute care using a novel device-based approach that could mitigate the impact of too much bedrest on frailty.

Purpose: Histological evidence indicates that the earliest structural changes to the optic nerve head (ONH) in glaucoma occur in the lamina cribrosa (LC) and its interface with the sclera. However, clinical imaging of these structures remains challenging. We compared the visibility of deep ONH structures with newer iterations of spectral-domain (SD) and swept-source (SS) optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Background: Social vulnerability occurs when the disadvantage conveyed by poor social conditions determines the degree to which one's life and livelihood are at risk from a particular and identifiable event in health, nature, or society. A common way to estimate social vulnerability is through an index aggregating social factors. This scoping review broadly aimed to map the literature on social vulnerability indices.

Onconephrology has emerged as a novel sub-specialty of nephrology dedicated to the intersection between the kidney and cancer. This intersection is broad and includes a number of important areas of focus, including concurrent chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cancer, acute kidney complications of cancer, and cancer-treatment-induced nephrotoxicity. The importance of onconephrology is even more evident when considering the global growth in the population of older adults, many of whom are living with some degree of frailty.

Objectives: Carotid intima-media-thickness (cIMT) is predictive of future cardiovascular events, increases with chronological age, and greater in males. The accumulation of health deficits (or frailty) is a marker of biological age. However, normative cIMT values are lacking and would be an important comparative tool for healthcare providers and researchers.

Background: The Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS) is scored using ICD-10 diagnostic codes in administrative hospital records. Home care clients in Canada are routinely assessed with Resident Assessment Instrument-Home Care (RAI-HC) which can calculate the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and the Frailty Index (FI).
Objective: Measure the correlation between the HFRS, CFS and FI and compare prognostic utility for frailty-related outcomes.

The cancer diagnostic process can be protracted, and it is a time of great anxiety for patients. The objective of this study was to examine inter- and intra-provincial variation in diagnostic intervals and explore factors related to the variation. This was a multi-province retrospective cohort study using linked administrative health databases.
