Objectives: Disease-modifying therapies in development for Huntington's disease (HD) may require specialised administration and additional resource capacity. We sought to understand current and future capacity for HD management in Canada considering the possible introduction of an intrathecal (IT) disease-modifying treatment (DMT).

Design, Setting And Participants: Using a case study, mixed methods framework, online surveys followed by semistructured interviews were conducted in late 2020 and early 2021.

Introduction: Physical activity throughout pregnancy has been shown to have health benefits for the pregnant person, including reductions in the risk of preeclampsia and gestational weight gain and improvements in blood pressure regulation. Despite the benefits, many pregnant women do not meet the guidelines for physical activity throughout pregnancy. Therefore, it is important to determine what influences women's activity levels during pregnancy.

Smoking Susceptibility in Canadian Adolescent Electronic-Cigarette Users.

Subst Use Misuse

May 2022

Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

E-cigarette use is increasing among Canadian youth, with experimentation especially prevalent among never-smoking youth. Among this group, there is concern e-cigarette use contributes to future initiation of smoking through a gateway effect. However, e-cigarette use and smoking share many common risk factors; a postulated mechanism to explain the apparent causal pathway from e-cigarette use to smoking initiation in previously smoking-naïve youth.

Augmented-reality telementoring for leg fasciotomy: a proof-of-concept study.

BMJ Mil Health

August 2023

Royal Canadian Medical Service, Canadian Armed Forces, Montréal, Quebec, Canada.

Background: Prolonged field care is required when casualty evacuation to a surgical facility is delayed by distance, weather or tactical constraints. This situation can occur in both civilian and military environments. In these circumstances, there are no established treatment options for extremity compartment syndrome.

Objectives: Information on emergency department (ED) visits for mental and substance use disorders (MSUDs) is important for planning services but has not been explored in British Columbia (BC), Canada. We describe all MSUD ED visits for people ages 15 and older in the province of BC in 2017/2018 and document trends in MSUD ED visits between 2007/2008 and 2017/2018 by disorder group.

Design: Population-based linked administrative data comprised of ED records and physician billings capturing all MSUD ED visits in BC.

Objective: Chronic endometritis is rarely reported in the postmenopausal population. Here, we describe a case of chronic endometritis in a patient who had undergone premature menopause that was later found to have Monckeberg arteriosclerosis (MocA) of the uterine vessels.

Methods: A review of the literature revealed a single report of MocA affecting the uterine vessels and no reports in a patient who had undergone premature menopause.

Early identification of frailty: Developing an international delphi consensus on pre-frailty.

Arch Gerontol Geriatr

March 2022

Clinical Sciences Institute, School of Medicine, National University of Ireland, Galway, Galway City, Ireland; Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation, University College Cork, Cork City, Ireland; Mercy University Hospital, Grenville Place, Cork City, Ireland. Electronic address:

Background: Frailty is associated with a prodromal stage called pre-frailty, a potentially reversible and highly prevalent intermediate state before frailty becomes established. Despite being widely-used in the literature and increasingly in clinical practice, it is poorly understood.

Objective: To establish consensus on the construct and approaches to diagnose and manage pre-frailty.

Background: In-person didactic education in residency has numerous challenges including inconsistent availability of faculty and residents, limited engagement potential, and non-congruity with clinical exposure.

Methods: An online curriculum in movement disorders was implemented across nine neurology residency programs (six intervention, three control), with the objective to determine feasibility, acceptability, and knowledge growth from the curriculum. Residents in the intervention group completed ten modules and a survey.

Background: Manual axon histomorphometry (AH) is time- and resource-intensive, which has inspired many attempts at automation. However, there has been little investigation on implementation of automated programs for widespread use. Ideally such a program should be able to perform AH across imaging modalities and nerve states.

Background: Parenteral nutrition is commonly administered during therapeutic hypothermia. Randomised trials in critically ill children indicate that parenteral nutrition may be harmful.

Objective: To examine the association between parenteral nutrition during therapeutic hypothermia and clinically important outcomes.

Objectives: Moving innovations into healthcare organisations to increase positive health outcomes remains a significant challenge. Even when knowledge and tools are adopted, they often fail to become integrated into the long-term routines of organisations. The objective of this study was to identify factors and processes influencing the sustainability of innovations in cancer survivorship care.

Background: Therapeutic hypothermia is standard of care for babies with moderate/severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy and is increasingly used for mild encephalopathy.

Objective: Describe temporal trends in the clinical condition of babies diagnosed with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy who received therapeutic hypothermia.

Design: Retrospective cohort study using data held in the National Neonatal Research Database.

TRPML1-Emerging Roles in Cancer.

Cells

December 2020

Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine, Halifax, NS B3H 4R2, Canada.

The mucolipin-1 (TRPML1) channel maintains lysosomal ionic homeostasis and regulates autophagic flux. Defects of TRPML1 lead to lysosomal storage diseases and neurodegeneration. In this report, we discuss emerging evidence pertaining to differential regulation of TRPML1 signaling pathways in cancer progression with the goal of leveraging the oncogenic potential of TRPML1 to inspire therapeutic interventions.

Background: Routine measurement of gastric residual volume to guide feeding is widespread in neonatal units but not supported by high-quality evidence. Outcome selection is critical to trial design.

Objective: To determine optimal outcome measures for a trial of not routinely measuring gastric residual volume in neonatal care.

Background: Multidisciplinary pain treatment facilities (MPTFs) are considered the optimal settings for the management of chronic pain (CP). This study aimed (1) to determine the distribution of MPTFs across Canada, (2) to document time to access and types of services, and (3) to compare the results to those obtained in 2005-2006.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used the same MPTF definition as in 2005-2006-that is, a clinic staffed with professionals from a minimum of three different disciplines (including at least one medical specialty) and whose services were integrated within the facility.

Background: With the integration of quality improvement (QI) into competency-based models of physician training, there is an increasing requirement for medical students and residents to demonstrate competence in QI. There may be factors that commonly facilitate or inhibit the desired outcomes of QI curricula in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. The purpose of this review was to synthesise attributes of QI curricula in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education associated with curricular outcomes.

Traumatic cauda equina injury (TCEI) is usually caused by spine injury at or below L1 and can result in motor and/or sensory impairments and/or neurogenic bowel and bladder. We examined factors associated with recovery in motor strength, walking ability, and bowel and bladder function to aid in prognosis and establishing rehabilitation goals. The analysis cohort was comprised of persons with acute TCEI enrolled in the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Registry.

Objective: Despite little evidence, the practice of routine gastric residual volume (GRV) measurement to guide enteral feeding in neonatal units is widespread. Due to increased interest in this practice, and to examine trial feasibility, we aimed to determine enteral feeding and GRV measurement practices in British neonatal units.

Design And Setting: An online survey was distributed via email to all neonatal units and networks in England, Scotland and Wales.
