This study investigates the impact of temperature variations on the performance of an aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) as it transitions from mesophilic (30 °C) to hyper-thermophilic (65 °C) conditions. The microbial community structure was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing to assess how temperature influences microbial diversity and composition. In mesophilic conditions, the system exhibited high alpha diversity with a Shannon index of 5.

Natural Product Research Institute and Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, Seoul National University, Seoul, 08826, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Nine previously undescribed (1-9) and seven known (10-16) cycloartane-type triterpenoids were isolated and characterized from Combretum quadrangulare Kurz using physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The absolute configurations of these compounds were determined through modified Mosher's method and quantum chemical calculation of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra. Their inhibitory activities against PCSK9 secretion were assessed, and a plausible structure-activity relationship was delineated.

In the experiments of neutron interaction with research samples, the incident neutron energy spectrum, distribution inside the irradiating sample volume, is affected by the unexpected neutron self-shielding effects. The nature of these effects is due to the formation and thickness of the irradiating sample, which significantly causes neutron self-absorption and multiple scattering inside the sample volume. The datasets presented in this article showed the thermal (G) and epithermal (G) neutron self-shielding correction factors for the W(n,γ)W neutron capture reaction rate in irradiating tungsten (W) foil samples with different thicknesses.

Evolution of the Araliaceae family involved rapid diversification of the Asian Palmate group and Hydrocotyle specific mutational pressure.

Sci Rep

December 2023

Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Bioresources, Plant Genomics and Breeding Institute, Research Institute of Agriculture and Life Science, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University, Seoul, 08826, South Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • The Araliaceae family has important medicinal and industrial species, and researchers conducted a detailed phylogenomic study analyzing 66 plastid genome sequences to understand their evolution.
  • The study found significant phylogenetic discordance within the Asian Palmate group, with species divergence occurring during climate changes, particularly during the Middle Miocene.
  • Additionally, it was noted that Hydrocotyloideae plastomes show a faster mutation rate, indicating a unique evolutionary path for aquatic plants in the family, while also exploring the intercontinental distribution in the genus Panax.

Background: Bigfin squid is one of the economically important seafood resources in Vietnam's fisheries and the waters around Con Dao and Phu Quoc islands are two major fishing grounds where this species has been actively exploited. The start codon targeted polymorphism (SCoT) and CAAT box-derived polymorphism (CBDP) techniques were used to generate DNA fingerprinting data to analyze the genetic diversity, variation, and structure of the two populations in the waters surrounding Phu Quoc and Con Dao islands together with mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequence data.

Results: Con Dao population possessed a higher diversity [expected heterozygosity (H) = 0.

The roles of Mn ions in the MnCO compound, leading to the formation of an Mn-Yb dimer and affecting the gain coefficient for the I → I transition of Er ions and near-infrared (NIR) emission bandwidth flatness of Er/Tm/Yb co-doped in SiO-ZnO-BaO (SZB) barium zinc silicate glasses, were investigated in this work. The composition of all elements from the original raw materials that exist in the host glasses was determined using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode (LD), the NIR emission of Er/Tm/Yb-co-doped SZB glasses produced a bandwidth of about 430 nm covering the O, E, and C bands.
