A novel strategy to map a locus associated with flowering time in canola (Brassica napus L.).

Mol Genet Genomics

October 2024

USDA/ARS, Weed and Insect Biology Research Unit, Edward T. Schafer Agricultural Research Center, 1616 Albrecht Blvd. N., Fargo, ND, 58102-2765, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Flowering time is crucial for canola breeding as it helps reduce heat stress and better utilize soil moisture, involving the internal circadian clock of plants.
  • The study used canola varieties 'Westar' and 'Surpass 400' to create a chromosome segment substitution line (CSSL) that contained a segment delaying flowering significantly compared to 'Westar.'
  • Four introgression lines (ILs) showed delayed flowering, indicating partial dominance in flowering time traits, and the flowering time locus was mapped to a 1 Mb region on chromosome A10.

  • Arachin (ARA) is a protein and resveratrol (RES) is a bioactive compound found in peanuts, and their interaction was studied to understand how they affect each other on a molecular level.
  • Using multispectral analysis and computational chemistry, researchers found that RES can quench ARA's intrinsic fluorescence and that their interaction is endothermic, spontaneous, and driven mainly by hydrophobic forces.
  • Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that specific amino acids play a key role in the strong affinity between ARA and RES, and the study's findings support potential food industry applications for their complex.

Mannose-Functionalized Chitosan-Coated PLGA Nanoparticles for Brain-Targeted Codelivery of CBD and BDNF for the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.

ACS Chem Neurosci

November 2024

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, College of Health and Human Sciences, North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota 58108-6050, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • - Alzheimer's disease (AD) leads to cognitive decline due to amyloid-β and tau protein buildup, while current treatments only alleviate symptoms, highlighting a need for approaches that can reverse cognitive impairment, like combining cannabidiol (CBD) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
  • - Researchers developed mannose-conjugated chitosan-coated poly(d,l-lactide--glycolide) nanoparticles for targeted delivery of CBD and BDNF across the blood-brain barrier, utilizing the glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) receptor for enhanced effectiveness in the brain.
  • - The nanoparticles showed a particle size of about 306 nm with a high positive charge, enabling a controlled release of CBD for up to 22 days

The study objective was to evaluate dietary limestone buffer inclusion rates for impacting nutrient digestibility and excretion when growing dairy cattle are fed high distiller grains with solubles (DDGS) limit-fed ration. The hypothesis was that feeding more limestone buffer would offset a low rumen pH when feeding a high DDGS inclusion rate. Five ruminally cannulated Holstein and Brown Swiss steers were used in a crossover design having 2-wk periods to evaluate high and low buffer inclusion rates when limit-fed.

Seasonal changes in sleep/wake cycles and behaviors related to reproduction often co-occur with seasonal fluctuations in sex hormones. Experimental studies have established that fluctuations in circulating testosterone mediate circadian rhythms. However, most studies are performed under constant lighting conditions and fail to investigate the effects of testosterone on the phenotypic output of circadian rhythms, that is, chronotype (daily activity patterns under light:dark cycles).

A narrative review of the relationship between head and neck cancer and obstructive sleep apnea: Clinical studies and statistical analysis.

Sleep Med Rev

December 2024

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, USA; Department of Medical Engineering, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often overlooked in the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC), and understanding the connection between the two is essential for improving patient care.
  • The paper reviews HNC therapy, the associations between OSA and HNC before and after treatment, and suggests appropriate statistical methods for researchers to investigate their relationship.
  • Findings indicate a positive correlation between OSA severity and tumor size, alongside new evidence of how head and neck tumors and surgeries can influence OSA, highlighting the need for further research with more detailed data to fully grasp their interconnection.

Objectives: Sleep disorder is a growing public health concern that requires attentive assessment and treatment. However, the length of assessment tools for sleep disorders, including insomnia, hinders their use in both research and clinical settings. Brief assessment measures expedite assessment time, reducing respondent burden, and save resources, especially in resource-limited settings.

Rootstocks are gaining importance in viticulture as a strategy to combat abiotic challenges, as well as enhancing scion physiology. Photosynthetic parameters such as maximum rate of carboxylation of RuBP (V) and the maximum rate of electron transport driving RuBP regeneration (J) have been identified as ideal targets for potential influence by rootstock and breeding. However, leaf specific direct measurement of these photosynthetic parameters is time consuming, limiting the information scope and the number of individuals that can be screened.

Moisture absorption into hygroscopic/hydrophilic materials used in fused deposition modeling (FDM) can diminish desired mechanical properties. Sensitivity to moisture is dependent on material properties and environmental factors and needs characterization. In this article, moisture sensitivity of four grades of polylactic acid (PLA) filaments and four different ratios of PLA/polybutylene succinate (PBS) blended filaments were characterized through FDM printed American society for testing and materials (ASTM-D638) test samples after conditioning the filaments at different relative humidity levels.

  • Researchers looked at how well people with eating disorders recognize emotions, not just if they got answers right.
  • They asked 87 college students to do tasks that test their ability to categorize emotions from faces while also looking at their eating disorder symptoms.
  • The study found that how well the students used facial features to recognize emotions didn’t really connect to eating disorder symptoms, but they suggested looking at this more in future studies, especially with people who have actual eating disorders.

Background And Objective: The brain α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR) has a critical role in the pathophysiology of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) involving neuroinflammation. The α7 nAChR stimulation has been shown to modulate the anti-inflammatory effects of nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPAR-α) via its endogenous ligands in the brain. The present study determined the effects of α7 nAChR modulator PNU120596 on PPAR-α, an inhibitor of κB (IκB) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) expression and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) level in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFC) in an inflammatory mouse model of MDD induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Background/objective: Nutritionists play a crucial role in guiding individuals toward healthier lifestyles through personalized meal planning; however, this task involves navigating a complex web of factors, including health conditions, dietary restrictions, cultural preferences, and socioeconomic constraints. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) offers a valuable framework for structuring these multi-faceted decisions but inconsistencies can hinder its effectiveness in pairwise comparisons.

Methods: This paper proposes a novel hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization-Simulated Annealing (PSO-SA) algorithm to refine inconsistent AHP weight matrices, ensuring a consistent and accurate representation of the nutritionist's expertise and client preferences.
