This study aims to verify whether the blood flow velocity and the diameter size, measured through intra-carotid artery Doppler measurements performed on sepsis patients visiting the emergency department, are useful as tools for predicting the risk of early death. As a prospective study, this research was performed on sepsis patients who visited a local emergency medical center from August 2021 to February 2023. The sepsis patients' carotid artery was measured using Doppler imaging, and they were divided into patients measured for the size of systolic and diastolic mean blood flow velocity and diameter size: those measured for their qSOFA (quick sequential organ failure assessment) score and those measured using the SIRS (systemic inflammatory response syndrome) criteria.

Proton resonance frequency shift (PRFS) is an MRI-based simple temperature mapping method that exhibits higher spatial and temporal resolution than temperature mapping methods based on T1 relaxation time and diffusion. PRFS temperature measurements are validated against fiber-optic thermal sensors (FOSs). However, the use of FOSs may introduce temperature errors, leading to both underestimation and overestimation of PRFS measurements, primarily due to material susceptibility changes caused by the thermal sensors.

Emerging evidences about gut-microbial modulation have been accumulated in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We evaluated the effect of and on the NAFLD pathology and explore the molecular mechanisms based on multi-omics approaches. Human stool analysis [healthy subjects ( = 25) and NAFLD patients ( = 32)] was performed to select NAFLD-associated microbiota.

While thyroid disturbances during perinatal and postnatal periods in preterm infants with congenital hypothyroidism reportedly disrupt neuronal development, no study has considered the effect of thyroid disturbances in premature infants with subclinical hypothyroidism with elevations of thyroid stimulating hormone. We aimed to identify altered fiber integrity from the thalamus to cortices in preterm infants with subclinical hypothyroidism. All preterm infants born were categorized according to thyroid stimulating hormone levels through serial thyroid function tests (36 preterm controls and 29 preterm infants with subclinical hypothyroidism).

This meal satisfaction assessment questionnaire for older adults (MSAQ) focuses on assessing meal satisfaction rather than only measuring physical functioning or the risk of malnutrition in older people. By looking at the factors that influence meal satisfaction in older adults through a comprehensive literature review, this study develops a scale for measuring meal satisfaction in older people. For content and face validation, a 61-item questionnaire was administered to 290 people using a five-point scale.

Analysis of Children's Physical Characteristics Based on Clustering Analysis.

Children (Basel)

June 2021

Department of Biomedical Informatics, College of Medicine, Konyang University, Daejeon-si 35365, Korea.

This study assessed the physical development, physical fitness (muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, agility, power, balance), and basal metabolic rate (BMR) in a total of 4410 children aged six (73-84 months) residing in Korea. Their physical fitness was visually classified according to the physical fitness factor and-considering that children showed great variations in the physical fitness criteria depending on their physique and body composition-the study aimed to assess characteristics such as physique and BMR, the precursor for fat-free mass, based on the physical health clusters selected through a multivariate approach. As a result, the physical health clusters could be subdivided into four clusters: balance (1), muscular strength (2), low agility (3), and low physical fitness (3) cluster.

Background: Korea Red Ginseng (KRG) has been used as remedies with hepato-protective effects in liver-related condition. Microbiota related gut-liver axis plays key roles in the pathogenesis of chronic liver disease. We evaluated the effect of KRG on gut-liver axis in patients with nonalcoholic statohepatitis by the modulation of gut-microbiota.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study tested the antibacterial effects of a fermented extract (FRVE) against a specific infection in mice, finding that it could eradicate the bacteria at a concentration of at least 2 mg/ml in vitro.
  • - In the animal model, FRVE at 6 mg/ml significantly reduced bacterial colonization and improved gastric inflammation compared to control groups, demonstrating its effectiveness in treating the infection.
  • - When combined with standard triple therapy (metronidazole, omeprazole, and clarithromycin), FRVE showed a synergistic effect, achieving a higher eradication rate than triple therapy alone (60% vs. 20%).

Ultrasonic inspection of welds joining dissimilar metals in nuclear power plants has proven to be a challenge, because the ultrasonic waves are subject to diffraction, distortion, scattering, and noise. These perturbations are due to their interactions with coarse-grained microstructures having anisotropic and heterogeneous metallurgical properties that can promote ultrasonic attenuation. In this paper, to improve the reliability of ultrasonic testing for dissimilar-metal welds (DMWs), ultrasonic beam characteristics for DMWs with a buttering layer were investigated in order to analyze the beam distortion phenomenon caused by inhomogeneous anisotropic properties and coarse grains.

This experimental research investigates the mechanical properties of municipal plastic waste-based particulate composites reinforced with coal ash (CA), the by-product of thermal power plants, for sustainable railway sleepers. Six series of sustainable composites filled with inorganic mineral fillers, including CA, were prepared by a twin-screw extruder and a compression molding machine. The effect of mix design variables-such as filler type, contents and the particle size of the filler-on mechanical properties-including tensile, compression and flexural properties-and morphology were characterized.

Background/aims: Enzymatic analysis of aspartate/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) does not exactly represent the progression of liver fibrosis or inflammation. Immunoassay for AST (cytoplasmic [c] AST/mitochondrial [m] AST) and ALT (ALT1/ALT2) has been suggested as one alternatives for enzymatic analysis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of immunoassay in predicting liver fibrosis and inflammation.
