Article Synopsis
  • The report discusses the clinical decision-making for a patient with rheumatoid arthritis experiencing neck pain and atlantoaxial instability, emphasizing the patient’s symptoms and neurological evaluations.
  • Despite initial radiographs showing preserved alignment, further examination revealed inadequate cervical motion and excessive movement during a Sharp-Purser test, leading to the discovery of severe anterior subluxation of C1 relative to C2.
  • The patient ultimately underwent successful posterior fusion surgery, highlighting the need for thorough screening and appropriate imaging in similar cases.

Laboratory evaluation of antifouling coatings is underpinned by settlement studies with specific fouling organisms. Established methods provide insight into the likelihood of failure of a particular coating system, but can neglect the process of surface selection that often precedes attachment. The present approach for quantifying the exploratory behaviour of barnacle cypris larvae suggested that inspection behaviour can be a rapid and predictive proxy for settlement.

Quantitative heterodonty in Crocodylia: assessing size and shape across modern and extinct taxa.

PeerJ

February 2019

Department of Physical Science, Physics and Pre-Engineering, Iowa Western Community College, Council Bluffs, IA, United States of America.

Heterodonty in Crocodylia and closely related taxa has not been defined quantitatively, as the teeth rarely have been measured. This has resulted in a range of qualitative descriptors, with little consensus on the condition of dental morphology in the clade. The purpose of this study is to present a method for the quantification of both size- and shape-heterodonty in members of Crocodylia.

Purpose: To determine the effects of cryotherapy on quadriceps electromyographic (EMG) activity and isometric strength in early postoperative knee surgery patients.

Methods: Twenty-two volunteers with recent knee surgeries were included. EMG readings of the vastus medialis (VM), rectus femoris (RF), and vastus lateralis (VL) from the surgical leg were collected during a maximal voluntary quadriceps setting (QS) activity.

Study Objectives: The current study's aim was to examine the indirect effect of parent-child pre-bedtime arguing about the bedtime process on adolescents' symptoms of anxiety and depression via the mediating role of adolescents' sleep quality. In addition, this study sought to test this mediation model across different levels of both parents' and children's dysfunctional sleep-related beliefs (ie, moderated mediation).

Methods: A total of 193 adolescent (mean age = 15.

Utility of FMS to understand injury incidence in sports: current perspectives.

Open Access J Sports Med

September 2018

Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ, USA,

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a popular movement screen used by rehabilitation, as well as strength and conditioning, professionals. The FMS, like other movement screens, identifies movement dysfunction in those at risk of, but not currently experiencing, signs or symptoms of a musculoskeletal injury. Seven movement patterns comprise the FMS, which was designed to screen fundamental movement requiring a balance between stability and mobility.

Hydrocephalus can be the result of an infection, obstruction, impaired reabsorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), or an abnormal increase in CSF. Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting is the gold standard treatment for hydrocephalus despite its high rate of complications, including catheter obstruction and infection. Spontaneous cecal perforation by a VP shunt is extremely rare.

Numerous studies investigate morphology in the context of habitat, and lizards have received particular attention. Substrate usage is often reflected in the morphology of characters associated with locomotion, and, as a result, claws have become well-studied ecomorphological traits linking the two. The Kimberley predator guild of Western Australia consists of 10 sympatric varanid species.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) refers to the abnormal formation of bone in soft tissue. Although some of the underlying processes of HO have been described, there are currently no clinical tests using validated biomarkers for predicting HO formation. As such, the diagnosis is made radiographically after HO has formed.

Lower extremity injuries have immediate and long-term consequences. Lower extremity movement assessments can assist with identifying individuals at greater injury risk and guide injury prevention interventions. Movement assessments identify similar movement characteristics and evidence suggests large magnitude kinematic relationships exist between movement patterns observed across assessments; however, the magnitude of the relationships for electromyographic (EMG) measures across movement assessments remains largely unknown.
