Article Synopsis
  • The study compared outcomes from two types of glenoid components used in anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty: convertible metal-backed and conventional cemented polyethylene components, focusing on patient recovery and complications.
  • Fifty patients were analyzed, with results showing significant clinical improvement post-surgery for both groups, and no major differences in functional angles between the two types of components.
  • However, the convertible metal-backed group had significantly lower complication rates, particularly fewer radiolucent lines, suggesting it may be a more reliable option for reducing future revision surgeries.

CT Scan Findings Can Predict the Safety of Delayed Appendectomy for Acute Appendicitis.

J Gastrointest Surg

September 2019

Department of Surgery, Seoul National University Boramae Medical Center, 20 Boramae-ro 5-gil, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, 07061, Republic of Korea.

Background: The relationship between duration of in-hospital waiting time and outcomes from appendectomy in patients with suspected appendicitis remains equivocal. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of in-hospital waiting time on perforation rates and clinical outcomes in patients with suspected appendicitis who underwent appendectomy.

Methods: A retrospective review of 5956 patients who underwent appendectomy at a single institution from January 2008 to December 2016 was performed.

We report the sonographic features of confirmed malignant appendiceal tumors in seven cases. The histologic diagnoses of these tumors were mucinous cystadenocarcinoma ( = 2), colonic type adenocarcinoma ( = 4), and signet-ring cell carcinoma ( = 1). The 2 mucinous cystadenocarcinomas showed mucocele type, which had markedly enlarged inner luminal diameters (mean, 23 mm; range, 15-31 mm) and thick, irregular walls (mean wall thickness, 5.

Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct a prospective clinical trial evaluating the technical feasibility and short-term clinical outcome of the blind pushing technique for placement of pretrimmed peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) through brachial vein access.

Methods: Patients requiring PICC placement at any of the three participating institutions were prospectively enrolled between January and December 2016. The review boards of all participating institutions approved this study, and informed consent was obtained from all patients.

Parapapillary Deep-Layer Microvasculature Dropout in Glaucoma: Topographic Association With Glaucomatous Damage.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

June 2017

Department of Ophthalmology, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seongnam, Korea.

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to compare the frequencies of the parapapillary deep-layer microvasculature dropout (MvD) detected by optical coherence tomography angiography in eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and healthy eyes and to determine the topographic correlation between the MvD and the glaucomatous retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defect in POAG eyes.

Methods: Microvasculature in the peripapillary deep-layer was evaluated in 150 POAG patients and 45 healthy controls using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography to identify an MvD. Frequencies of MvDs were compared between the POAG and control groups.

Introduction: To our knowledge, this study is the first to identify the predictive factors and outcomes of prolonged operative time associated with laparoscopic appendectomy. We aimed to identify preoperative factors that influence operation time and to determine how operative time affects laparoscopic appendectomy outcomes.

Methods: The medical records of 3049 patients who had undergone laparoscopic appendectomy between January 2008 and December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed.

Predictive factors and outcomes of negative appendectomy.

Am J Surg

April 2017

Department of Surgery, Daejin Medical Center Bundang Jesaeng General Hospital, Sungnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: The aim of this study was to assess predictive factors for negative appendectomy and to evaluate the outcomes of negative appendectomy.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of 4,878 patients who underwent appendectomy at our institution from January 2008 to December 2014 was performed.

Results: Younger age (≤15 years), normal white blood cell count, appendix diameter of less than 6 mm on computed tomography (CT), and CT grade less than 3 were found to be independent predictive factors for negative appendectomy.

Controversy surrounds appendectomy timings and their effects on postoperative outcomes. This study evaluated the influence of hospital delays on perforation rates and complications in patients with acute appendicitis. From January 2008 to December 2013, the cases of 4148 consecutive patients who had undergone appendectomies for suspected appendicitis were reviewed.

Background: Early detection of recurrence improves the survival rate of patients treated with breast conservation therapy (BCT). Therefore, ultrasonography (US) may be useful for metachronous ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (MIBTR) obscured on mammography by dense breast tissue and distortion.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings of MIBTR retrospectively, and to assess the role of surveillance US additional to mammography for MIBTR detection.

Purpose: This study prospectively investigated the effects of biofeedback therapy on objective anorectal function and subjective bowel function in patients after sphincter-saving surgery for rectal cancer.

Methods: Sixteen patients who underwent an ileostomy were randomized into two groups, one receiving conservative management with the Kegel maneuver and the other receiving active biofeedback before ileostomy closure. Among them, 12 patients (mean age, 57.

Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and speech and language therapy (SLT) on the improvement of performance on the Korean-version of the Western Aphasia Battery (K-WAB) in post-stroke non-fluent aphasic patients.

Methods: Twenty post-stroke, non-fluent aphasic patients were enrolled and assigned to one of two groups: a case group (n = 10) or a control group (n = 10). Participants were recruited from the inpatient clinic of the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Department of Bundang Jesaeng General Hospital from March 2011 to January 2012.

Idiopathic CD4(+) T-lymphocytopenia is a rare immune disorder characterized by an unexplained deficit of CD4(+) T cells and results in various opportunistic infections. Herein, we report a case of new onset weakness in a 10-year-old boy secondary to motor axonal neuropathy associated with idiopathic CD4(+) T-lymphocytopenia. The patient was referred to rehabilitation for an evaluation of progressive weakness involving all four limbs.

Purpose: To prospectively estimate the additional diagnostic value of ultrasound (US) re-evaluation for patients with equivocal computed tomography (CT) findings of acute appendicitis.

Methods: Between April 2011 and October 2011, 869 consecutive patients with suspected appendicitis who were referred for CT were included. The likelihood of appendicitis was prospectively categorized into five categories.
