With the ongoing global warming-induced climate change, there has been a surge in vector-borne diseases, particularly tick-borne diseases (TBDs). As the population of companion animals grows, there is growing concern from a One Health perspective about the potential for these animals to spread TBDs. In this study, ticks were collected from companion animals and the surrounding environment in Daejeon Metropolitan City, Korea, using flagging and dragging, and CO trap methods.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an increase in depression among college students due to anxiety and fear of infection. Nonetheless, COVID-19 infection prevention measures should be actively implemented. In this study, the mediating effect of health belief on the relationship between depression and infection prevention behavior was investigated.

Assessment of Zn toxicity/mobility based on its speciation and transformations in soils is critical for maintaining human and ecosystem health. Zn-concentrate (56 % Zn as ZnS, sphalerite) has been imported through a seaport and transported to a Zn-smelter for several decades, and smelting processes resulted in aerial deposition of Zn and sulfuric acids in two geochemically distinct territories around the smelter (mountain-slope and riverside). XAFS analysis showed that the mountain-slope soils contained franklinite (ZnFeO) and amorphous (e.

Background: This pilot study aimed to investigate the effects of developing scenario learning (DSL) on team efficacy, systems thinking, and proactivity in problem-solving in a fundamental nursing course.
Methods: A total of 53 second-year nursing students were enrolled in the study; the DSL nursing education program was implemented for 15 weeks from March 4 to June 17, 2021. Data on team efficacy, systems thinking, and proactivity in problem-solving were measured before and after the DSL-based nursing education program.

We describe a case of acute respiratory failure caused by inhalation of gas formed from a reaction of intentional dissolution of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) tablets in water. A patient had refractory respiratory failure despite the use of conventional therapy, including lung-protective mechanical ventilation. Early veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) support was initiated in the emergency department (ED).

The recent studies reported that DNA methylation markers show changes with age, and expected that the DNA methylation markers can be effectively used for estimation of age in forensic genetics. In this study, we applied droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) method to investigate the DNA methylation pattern in the CpG sites, and we constructed an age prediction model based on the ddPCR method. The ddPCR is capable of highly sensitive quantitation of nucleic acid and detection of sequence variations in gene by separating the sample into large number of partitions and clonally amplifying nucleic acids in each partition.

Our recent study demonstrated that the CC-chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) present in primary afferent fibers (PAFs) plays an important role in the microglia-dependent neuronal activation associated with zymosan-induced inflammatory pain. The present study was aimed to evaluate whether BD1047 (a prototypical sigma-1 receptor (Sig-1R) antagonist) is capable of modifying elevated levels of inflammation-evoked CCL2 as a peripheral antinociceptive mechanism. In DRG primary culture, zymosan dose-dependently increased CCL2 release from isolectin B4 (IB4)-positive DRG neurons, a process that was inhibited by co-culture with BD1047.

Objective: To determine the primary contributor to neurotoxicity in patients with glufosinate ammonium (GLA) poisoning, by quantifying glufosinate, 1-methoxy-2-propanol, and ammonia in serum and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Materials And Methods: We collected and analysed data from confirmed cases of GLA poisoning between May 2018 and August 2020. Based on the occurrence of neurological complications (mental change, seizure, and central apnoea), patients were assigned to one of two groups: those with complications (NCx) and without (non-NCx) complications.

Patient safety is an important healthcare issue worldwide, and patient accidents in the operating room can lead to serious problems. Accordingly, we investigated the explanatory ability of a modified theory of planned behavior to improve patient safety activities in the operating room. Questionnaires were distributed to perioperative nurses working in 12 large hospitals in Korea.

Infectious disease outbreaks such as COVID-19 and MERS pose a major threat to healthcare workers' (HCWs) physical and mental health. Studies exploring the positive changes gained from adapting to traumatic events, known as post-traumatic growth (PTG), have attracted much attention. However, it is unclear which factors or experiences lead to PTG among HCWs.

Substantial improvement of microvolume UV absorption spectrometry in sensitivity, robustness and ease of operation was achieved for routine biological applications. A unique microtubing-based absorption cell (208 μm internal diameter) featuring enhanced light transmission with a liquid core waveguide technique provided dramatically enhanced absorption sensitivity, proportional to the extended path length (50 mm, from the typical 1 mm), while robust measurement performance was attained by implementation of preventive measures against bubble trapping along the light path. For plasmid DNA, absorbance at 260 nm was reliably measurable down to 0.

The positive effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are primarily activated through molecular secretions known as paracrine activity, which regulates the function of various cell types including immune cells. Accumulating evidence shows that exosomes of soluble factors released from MSCs are potential alternative agents for stem cell-based therapy, although the exact underlying mechanism has not been elucidated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of exosomes produced by adipose-derived MSCs and to examine the changes in anti-inflammatory genes in concurrence with the polarization of M2 macrophages in cellular models ex vivo.

Congenital anomalies are caused by a variety of risk factors, including individual and environmental ones. This study estimated the prevalence of oral clefts and examined their area-level risk indicators using data from The National Congenital Anomaly Survey in South Korea. Disease mapping and ecological regression were used to assess the geographical variation and potential risk indicators for oral clefts, such as living in a rural area, material deprivation, and limited access to antenatal healthcare.
