This study investigated the effects of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment on the physicochemical properties of rice flour according to its moisture levels in order to develop new materials for processed rice foods. The rice varieties used were the Samkwang variety (normal and hard type) and the Shingil variety (processing and soft type). The moisture content of the rice flour was adjusted to 35-55% and it was treated with the HHP treatment at 400-600 MPa.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are critical for optimal brain health and are involved in psychiatric and neurological ailments. Here, we report the effects of higher endogenous omega-3 PUFA on memory impairment in the hippocampus by studying mice with transgenic expression of the fat-1 gene that converts omega-6 to omega-3 PUFA. We performed Y-maze and passive avoidance tests to evaluate the memory function of fat-1 mice treated with scopolamine.

Temozolomide (TMZ) is an alkylating agent commonly used as a first‑line treatment for high‑grade glioblastoma. However, TMZ has short half‑life and frequently induces tumor resistance, which can limit its therapeutic efficiency. In the present study, it was hypothesized that combined treatment with TMZ and acteoside has synergistic effects in glioblastoma therapy.

Objectives: Coxsackievirus A group 16 strain (CVA16) is one of the predominant causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD).
Methods: Using a specimen from a male patient with HFMD, we isolated and performed sequencing of the Korean CVA16 strain and compared it with a G10 reference strain. Also, we were investigated the effects of medicinal plant extract on the cytopathic effects (CPE) by CPE reduction assay against Korean CVA16.

The effects of an ethanolic extract of Angelica gigas (EAG) on the vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and high-cholesterol diet-induced hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis were investigated. Rat aortic VSMCs were stimulated with platelet-derived growth factor-BB (25 ng/mL) for the induction of DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. EAG (1-10 µg/mL) significantly inhibited both the thymidine incorporation and cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner.

The present study estimated the efficacy of electrochemical detection of imidazolidinyl urea-induced cell toxicity in skin human fibroblast cells (HFF cells). The gold nanopunct structures were fabricated through a nanoporous alumina mask, and the structural formations were confirmed via scanning electron microscopy. The HFF cells were allowed to attach to RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) peptide nanopatterned surfaces, and electrochemical tools were applied to skin cells attached to the chip surface.

Objective: We recently observed a case of propafenone self-poisoning in which the patient was initially unresponsive to conventional therapies such as sodium bicarbonate, dopamine, and norepinephrine but recovered with intravenous glucose-insulin infusion. We raised the hypothesis that insulin may have a cardioprotective effect in acute propafenone toxicity.
Methods: We evaluated the effect of glucose-insulin infusion on mortality and electrocardiographic abnormalities during acute propafenone toxicity in rats.

Human rhinoviruses (HRVs), members of the Picornaviridae family, are composed of over 100 different virus serotypes. Until now there is no recorded clinically effective antiviral chemotherapeutic agent for treatment of diseases caused by HRVs. Our previous study of raoulic acid tested against serotype human rhinoviruses showed anti-HRV2 (species A) and -3 (species B) activities.
